- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -27/+180I'd like to see you try it.
- technique, on 10/12/2007, -4/+81Bah! Back in my day we lifted cars off ourselves and we liked it
- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+77This article fails to mention the man ate a can of spinach before lifting the car. Reported as inaccurate.
- frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -23/+88people asways think of lifting a car as an impossible feat, like 2000 pounds. however, since you're just tipping the car a little onto its back wheels, it isn't impossible by any means. I would guess that he would have to have lifted maybe 500-700 pounds, which is possible because of a huge adrenaline rush.
- sugardaddy4242, on 10/12/2007, -3/+68Was his name Bruce Banner?
- fitzfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44"Any of you ever stop to think maybe he lifted 1/4 of the car by lifting one of the 4 edges up enough to get the boy out?"
So he didnt lift the whole car over his head and throw it off the kid? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+50Good story except for the fact that the guy with a suspended license didn't get tossed in jail where he should be.
- stranflow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Do you drive a camaro? ;-)
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35It said he lifted the front of the car, and that means it pivoted on the rear axle. Most of the weight is well in front of the rear axle, so that's still quite a lot.
- TheAnti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Ok, so I love how the kid gets cited for riding without the lights and stuff and the other driver just gets cited too for driving on a suspended license. What the heck is that? Shouldn't the driver be in a lot more trouble seeing that he was already breaking the law by not even being legally able to drive?
Good story though, glad that guy was there to help him. - Santad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29@radu79
The guy with the suspended license is the one who was "in shock" and wasn't helping save the kid. Luckily there was someone else there who saved the kid's life. If the guy with the suspended license hadn't been driving in the first place, then none of this would've happened at all. - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32No, but I imagine that Mr. Glass took notice of the incident.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I had an '86 Chevy Sprint 3 door hatchback. I knew several people that could lift the back of it up, no problem. Now mind you, this was the front of a Camaro. Which weighs twice what my Sprint weighed. That is impressive, and I would have thought impossible. My Sprint had a 1000cc 3-cylinder. Most Camaros have Small Block Chevy V-8's.
- d00ley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Typical, the kid that got hit was cited for bicycle violations.
- samgab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Hmm, but the engine is in the front, and that's the heaviest part.
- Xalorous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24bicyclists are not considered pedestrians
- Xalorous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23he yelled at the driver 4 or 5 times before the driver came to his senses enough to pull the kid out.
RTFA - mcaaronice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24The quotes in the description are refering to the biker being hit by a car and NOT the guy lifting the car. The article doesn't make a big deal about the car being lifted.
- TheFlamingoKing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@ Xalorous
Thank the Lord someone else out there knows the law. We must be part of like 1% of the population.
A bike is a car on the road in the eyes of the law. You must stop at every stop sign. You must use turn signals. You must use lights at night in most places. You must drive on the right side of the road (with traffic not against it). You do not have the right of way by default.
You don't know how many times I've almost hit some fool on campus because they think they can do whatever they like just because they're on a bicycle. - LacY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@radu79--did you actually read the article? The guy who lifted the car isn't the one with the suspended license--that was the driver of the car. The driver of the car is getting the ticket, not the "hero."
- Ender0910, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The kid was riding without lights on the wrong side of the road. The other dude was driving with a suspended license... a mess all around.
But yeah, a good story. - Buga, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I live a mile away from where this happened. This was big news on the local news channels the entire week. That intersection has like the highest crash rate in town. Seems like everyday when I drive home from work theres an accident there
- KYDS3K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14i like how they made dude take a second picture with the "tough guy walking" pose . . . with the big jet behind him, like he just finished picking THAT up, too!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15This is a great story. Something like this just brightens your day.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12damn that guy deserves a medal
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You wouldn't necessarily have to lift the car into the air - just relieve enough of the weight for him to be dragged out. Now, what's confusing to me is that the article said that the front wheels were already off the ground ?!?! I can't imagine the cyclist's skeleton supporting the front axle weight - maybe it was up on a curb?
- insanemike, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Excellent "Unbreakable" reference.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Sorry, got the names mixed.
Shouldn't post comments when it's 37C in the room and my brain is overheating :/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"So he didnt lift the whole car over his head and throw it off the kid?"
HULK NOT LIKE CAMARO! - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Good man!
- ghostrunner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, I'm amazed at how many diggers here really miss the mark. This man, Tom Boyle, saved this boy's life. But instead of recognize his selflessness and compassion and give him the adulation that he deserves, half of the diggers here have to bitch about the peripheral details of the story. What Tom Boyle did was heroic in the purest sense of the word. Period.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If you ever watch "World's Strongest Man" on ESPN, one of the competitions is a deadlift of 1,100 lbs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_Strongest_Man - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Not sure about your state, but here in SC, it is required that bicycles on the road after dark have a headlight. You can use whatever you want, from something permanetly mounted to the handlebars, to a flashlight duct-taped to your hat, or whatever you can think up, but it is the law that you have a lightsource of some kind.
- missrose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Its always nice to help someone for no other reason than wanting to.
- mattb5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Isn't that Bobby Bacala from The Sopranos?
- kavery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I lifted a keg of beer into the back of my truck by myself and damn near drank it all too yet I didn't get any press.
- d00ley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4True. Usually the limitions of our strength is limited by our brain's goal of protecting the body (tendons, muscles, bones - in this case) from damage. If there's a psychology trigger basically deciding that protecting one's own body from damage is less important than the person's present goal, then we basically have access to our muscles' full strength... until it or something else snaps.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"He was pouring blood everywhere, and he kept saying he didn't want to waste anyone's time."
How emo. - ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The guy doesn't necessarily have to be strong enough to normally lift the car -- or even the front end of it. Adrenaline can do some crazy things, and people have been known to lift extremely large amounts or perform pretty amazing feats when faced with a life-and-death situation. I'm not trying to detract from what this guy did...just saying that its entirely feasible.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nice job, buddy.
- missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The kid on the bike broke the law, but it seems a little spiteful for him to still get a ticket. I mean, the kid got run over and pinned under a car and still got a ticket, but I can get out of a speeding ticket by batting my eyelashes at the cop?
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@d00ley - Yeah, that usually is the case unfortunatly. I had a guy run into the front bumper of my Jeep Warngler when I had it. It completely taco'd his bike's frame. He was all pissed at me and said he didn't want me to call the police, just help him pay for the bike. I asked him how much that would be and he said it was a $1200 bike. I said "I'm not giving you $600 becuase you hit me." He told me to call the cops so I did. We had to wait for about 30 minutes and he got cited for riding against the flow of traffic. He was goin northbound in the southbound bicycle lane. He also may have gone to jail because he had a warrant out from the next county. I don't know what happened because I left before the cop was done with him. It was funny when the guy was trying to get me to just pay him for his bike. He kept saying bicycles ALWAYS have the right of way. I said, "Not when you're breaking the law." I guess he got his.
- t3rmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4To the person who said Camaro bumpers are fiberglass:
All but the first few years of 2nd gen ('74-on?) Camaros had substantial "battering ram" bumpers which could easily handle the weight. They did cover the bumpers in the late 70's, but I imagine you could still find a solid place to grip. I'm unsure about 3rd (80's) and 4th (90's) gen. Point being it's easily possible that the Camaro had a bumper which could support its weight. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@cawpin
The Corvette Z06 is the top performance/cost car in the world?!
The 2006 Lotus Elise has it beat in that metric.
No, it doesn't beat the Z06's numbers (except in the slalom), but it does come pretty close (4.7sec 0-60 vs. 4.4sec, 13.4sec 1/4mile vs. 12.7sec). But when you consider that the Elise comes in at under $40k, while the Z06 is over $52k... *and* that the Elise gets nearly 30mpg on the highway... I'll take the Elise and $12k in my pocket any day.
http://www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elise/thecar/performance/performance.html - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Don't blame the Camaro, blame the redneck fascination with cheap Chevys.
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm...a mild-mannered paint-shop supervisor.
- danlovejoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Which means this guy was REALLY sore the next day. In the best case scenario.
- contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, that guy's kids must be so proud.
- Justice101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I forgot about that movie, I call for a sequel Here! Here!
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I just watched that move two weeks ago. What a cool movie.
