- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -16/+299I think the expression is actually
'Video or it didn't happen!'
Although ironically - without video, it might not have happened. - Nighttime, on 10/12/2007, -8/+259Sick.....
"Some of us chatroom users, talking to Kevin over text chat, microphones and video tried to convince him to step down, but others egged him on telling him to get on with it.
"We just couldn't believe he was doing it - it was surreal.
"One chatter said: 'F***ing do it, get on with it, get it round your neck. For F***'s sake he can't even do this properly'." - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -55/+2451) RTFA. He had two 12-year old girls.
2) Die. He deserved to live more than you do.
3) If you're reading this, you're not dead yet. You not only fail at life, you fail at death as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -38/+210And I'm sure some lame digger will soon reply, "well where is the video, I wanna see!!" It's sad that's how society now works.
- rnwen2750, on 10/12/2007, -10/+100And, if you cannot respect him, respect his poor young girls. They do not deserve any of this.
- ohthehumanity, on 10/12/2007, -23/+87Suicide isn't funny , and most of these posts are disrespectful. Show some respect for the deceased.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+71WARNING: THE ABOVE IMAGE IS A REAL PICTURE OF THE MAN DYING
- Slipknotic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+68I am a member of a forum, which also has an IRC. It has a sub-section for drugs, and many avid drugs users talk about their experiences, or even going on while under the influence. In this particular channel if you do not plan on ever doing drugs, or are against them, you're frowned upon. A young man decided he was going to show off, and do an assortment of drugs to show off to the community. He overdosed, died, and many of us were shocked. It's sad when his last words were "Am I hardcore enough?"

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59>>Please tell me they have all the IP's of the ppl who were in that chat room.
Let's say for the sake of argument they have the entire list. Now what? - hoshizakistar, on 10/12/2007, -20/+73welcome to my block list, rustyarmor.
- Alfyx, on 11/07/2008, -8/+58Humanity just sickens me sometimes. I'm not speaking of the deceased, but those who encouraged him. Just despicable. For the sake of his family, show the guy some respect. Futhermore, before anyone else decides to condemn him of being a loser/coward, RTFA!
"[Whitrick] had been suffering from depression after being badly injured in a car crash last year." "the breakdown of his marriage[...] and the recent death of his father had also been causing him some distress."
I'm not too sure any of you would be mentally stable after experiencing the same problems. - puffinkiss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55Poor man. It's a shame that some of the comments in here echo the people in the chat room who egged him on. Really reflects well on the caliber of some digg users..
- Zaetha, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54This happens when you're depressed and around *****. His mistake was to log on.
Because "The Internet is for porn" AND trolls. We all know that. - johnmalc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51I hate to be such a bastard, but he did log onto a specifically designated "insult chatroom" where members are meant to have a go at each other. If I were the type of person who also logged into that room, I probably wouldn't be the first to think "he might actually do this, we should be kind and talk him out of this".
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+55@Akaji:
Is it ironic or just wrong that the same people who think it was sick of the chat room people to tell that one guy to kill himself also probably dugg you up when you told the top poster to kill himself? - Tourney3p0, on 10/12/2007, -8/+53It would have been even sadder if his last words had been, "i told u i was hardcore".
- eatsushi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49Nobody has any respect for their fellow man anymore. Just because it is the internet, does not mean everything is virtual and you can say anything you want..well you can, but eventually you see the results of your actions.
- wm2010russ, on 10/12/2007, -14/+56acepuppy
people have watched other people kill themselves for thousands of years, and im not saying that its right, i just dont want you thinking its something new. thats how people are, they want to see that kind of stuff. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44In death we have a name, his name was Robert Paulsen.
And then, Tyler was gone. - yumyym, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43that's just sickening. it's not a joke; whats wrong with these people?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Just watch the Saddam one, a hanging is a hanging is a hanging.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37I don't know which is worse. The fact that this picture was posted, or the absolutely awful, unfeeling things that were said in that chat room.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23This is very, very sad. It's hard to know for sure, but his closed head injury (CHI) from the auto accident probably had something to do with his depression. That happens frequently. It's hard to tell if it is a primary effect of the injury, or secondary from all the other problems (i.e. you get depressed cause you can't remember anything, you can't do anything, you got fired from your job because your performance sucks since the accident, etc) but it is well documented.
Needless to say, I hope all of those that encouraged him burn in hell, and/or are tormented the rest of their days wondering if their words pushed him over the edge. At least some people did the right thing and notified the police; too bad they didn't get there in time.
Depression is an illness. Suicide is the end state of severe depression. ***** you all who are saying awful things about this poor man. I feel terrible for his two girls, who will go through life without their father, and have the guilt about how he died following them. - SwankRock3000, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29I must say, I'm surprised at the reactions here.
I think the broader social implications are what makes this story most interesting, and what people seem to be ignoring.
People commit suicide every day, Its sad but it's a fact of life, and I understand having compassion for someone who's been driven to these extremes. However, What sets this story apart is that this guy, granted obviously had mental issues, but killed himself in a very public way. He wanted people to see, He wanted to be a ***** star. It seems not even suicide can be done with some semblance of dignity. Thats why anyone is even talking about this story, and thats why I feel this guy doesn't the amount of sympathy alot of you seem fit to give him.
When you look at other public suicides, most famously R.Budd Dywer's on-air suicide in the 80s, the common reaction seems to be "wow, thats sad. But still, what an selfish *****", and I think those who were in the chat with this guy, probably first and foremost weren't believing it was real, but secondly probably just felt the same way "what an attention-seeking douchebag.". I'm not saying it's ever right to encourage someone to commit suicide, it's a awful, sick thing to do, but with a mix of cynicism and disgust for the way he chose to broadcast it, I can understand the motivation behind their words.
I mean, for crying out loud, this guy killed himself infront on an audience of anonymous chatters, and some of you seem to want to give him sainthood. - zotzed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Would these people have egged him on if they were in the same room as him? If so, then would they be more morally responsible for thier actions then if they were only on the other side of a video stream egging him on? Just because you are seperated by a wire instead of in the same room should not change the way you interact with people when it comes to life and death situations. If it does, then you should really re-visit the way you view your position in this life and online.

You don't say. - robdiggity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22The reason: You are a douche.
- newshog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19***** all you chat-room juvenile idiots that encouraged him. He was a sick man suffering from a mental disorder of some kind. Educate yourselves before you pass judgment on someone or comment on some topic you obviously know nothing about. Stupid clot.
- Kratisto, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32What's with all the sympathy for these attention whoring idiots who kill themselves? Do you know how many people died today in car crashes that had children? This guy's a stupid *****, and he did it to himself. Therefore, while I'm sorry for his daughters, his suicide is well deserved.
- PiratePanties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Uh...I just wanted to point out:
FTA: "He was logged on with around 50 other users to a special "insult" chatroom where people "have a go at each other". "
Now, first off, I do think this was horrible and tragic. But everyone keeps getting hung up on the whole "egged him on bit", without paying attention to the fact that he was in a chat room designed especially FOR that. My personal feelings, of course, are that not much good can come from a chat room like that. But we all know that there are chat rooms for just about anything imaginable out there (whether you agree with the topic or not) and I suppose they have a right to exist. I think in this case that perhaps there wasn't any safety measures in place (as there should be for chats that consist of questionable content - i.e. if suicide is mentioned it should ALWAYS be taken seriously, as a rule), and due to the nature of the room no one thought he was serious. I am absolutly NOT condoning what the users did - I think that is a horrible thing to even joke about, but at the same time he willingly went somewhere where that type of behavior was expected and the norm. Their behavior may have contributed, and was shameful, but was certainly not the sole cause. He obviously sought after that type of chat. Anyway, if nothing else, I think it just teaches people to always take suicide threats seriously - joke or not. It's just better to ere on the side of caution.
My heart does go out to him and his family. No one has the right to judge anyone, even in suicide, because you can NEVER know what someone else is going through. Calling this guy a coward and whatever else is just pointless. Regardless whether or not you see the ACT of suicide as cowardly, it's just not fair to call the man a coward. You didn't know him. Leave him be. - Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -18/+35"Show some respect for the deceased."
Explain to me how you can bash on people their entire lifes and perhaps they earn it by being the worst people on earth, yet in death they deserve respect. Suicide does not deserve respect, it is because people mindlessly do this that the mentally ill believe they would be more respected dead than alive and commit suicide. - eunichs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Yes this is disgusting.. Much better that you pay your taxes to fund the killing on the news, Where it should be.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29Its not like anyone can find a video anyways... its a "web cam". I really don't think that someone recorded it to there computer while this was going on... know what I mean...
- MisterWhite, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25I wish he had gotten psychiatric help, they we wouldn't have to pity his daughters.
- Akaricloud, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19You might even say people hung around to watch what would happen

Chat logs are at the bottom. - VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -3/+14Just about one of the saddest and sickest thing I have read.
I don't want to be drawn into a religious debate but: f there is an afterlife or karma exists the hecklers that urged him on to do it will get what is coming to them. - garg, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22It's the people who egged him on who society needs out of its gene pool.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I fuking don't think your amazing. I think your a sick psycho *****.
Anyway the intersting thing is you can look these people up and send them messages.
Here's the profile of one of them who was laughing as he was choking:
http://people.paltalk.com/people/users/angelofthenorth38_1/photo_showcase.wmt?photo=31 - arenas46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12his last words, according to the chat logs on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Vedas
[05:04] I'm fukcin
were his last words... And he didn't ask if he was hardcore enough, it was [04:49] I told u I was hardcore
... So @Tourney3p0, you were right - user0533, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Damn. I don't know if it's seeing the picture of him or not but this is one of the sadder stories I've seen on Digg.
This sucks. - aukxsona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It takes guts to actually go through with suicide. Most people that succeed are the kindest, sweetest, souls you'll meet. Perhaps they were not meant for this earth...perhaps this earth was too cruel for them. I'm not being sarcastic in the least. I have lost many good friends to suicide...so many I consider myself a survivor.
I send my heart felt prayers and well wishes out to his family. I know those poor children will have it hard. Down the road in years to come they may even blame themselves, their mother, or their dad. In reality, it's just a tragedy. - Slugger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Condolences to the family
- dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The community's web site is located at shroomery.org for those interested.
And yes, the parent post misquotes the deceased. If you want to read the IRC log, they're easily searched for via Google. Just search for "i told u i was hardcore" and you'll find the log. - quacker912, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What the ***** is wrong with people, laughing and egging him on? ***** ridiculous.
- appetite, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21`People` deserve respect. Suicide is never funny and it's no use making someone who killed himself the object of scorn. Your stupid self-righteous message against people who commit suicide is lamer than lame.
