- DangerCollie, on 01/11/2009, -0/+78I've seen that before but it's usually family. "If my momma dies, I'm going to kill all of you!" We'll work a dead patient in some cases, at least until the deputies get there. We have a code for dispatch when we need law enforcement. We can say the patient is not secure or that the patient is "code 22" which we mix in with the vitals. Dispatch will copy the transmission without announcing the cavalry is coming over the hill. The officers know to kill the lights and siren and walk up to the scene.
If we time it right we're carrying the patient out just about the time the officers are walking up to the house. Say hello to my little friend!
Plus people in accidents do strange things. I've had patients fight me, slap at the ambulance attendant trying to treat them. Trauma can really bake your noodle, they don't know what they're doing. I've heard firefighters say, "No hitting! If you hit me I'm going to kick your ass." And they're not kidding. We've had to restrain people, had to tackle them to keep them from running into a fire scene, threaten pedestrians and vehicles with a fire hose. I've personally threatened to turn a guy's pickup truck into an aquarium if he didn't move it right damn now. - SHv2, on 01/11/2009, -1/+62I told you already, IT HURTS WHEN YOU POKE ME THERE!
- inactive, on 01/11/2009, -0/+31dude had one too many ice-cold stethoscopes.
- b3and1p, on 01/11/2009, -0/+29I could listen to interesting stories from paramedics all day! Fascinates me somehow.
- RiantGorkette, on 01/11/2009, -1/+22Naw, us Canadians have free health care.
- inactive, on 01/11/2009, -0/+20Dugg for Edmonton. w000t!!!!!!!1
- noPCtoday, on 01/11/2009, -1/+18that's what she said
- OneRottenTomato, on 01/10/2009, -9/+25"This really highlights the unknowns, the inherent dangers that all emergency responders face when they're dealing with people that they don't know and dealing with people in unusual situations," Carlson said.
Yea, because auto mobile accidents are highly unusual, and Canadian gun wielding accident survivors have been quite an epidemic lately. - Fhwqhgads, on 01/11/2009, -1/+15Us Canadians are not burdened by such absurdities.

- DangerCollie, on 01/11/2009, -0/+13Go volunteer if you're physically capable, or look into EMT school. I'd have a hard time doing it for a living. EMT/Paramedic consistently rank along the bottom of job satisfaction surveys, so volunteers sometimes make a huge difference. Being there for a lift assist, carrying a bag...little things can help a lot.
It's usually a thankless job, then at our Christmas party a lady came in and thanked us for saving her baby who got hit by a drunk driver. We were all crying.
I got into it when I stopped by a little podunk fire station looking to rent a fire engine for a music video. That was four years ago. - WhoDoneIt, on 01/11/2009, -0/+11He's just frustrated with the Oilers.
- Daxx22, on 01/11/2009, -0/+11You all missed the point of the joke.
- lokai, on 01/11/2009, -0/+10I was going to say, well, imagine being perfectly comfortable with dying, then waking up to find that you are being treated, that you don't want the treatment, and that it is going to cost a ***** of money.
Then I realized the guy is Canadian so he doesn't have to worry about super expensive medical bills. - CalgaryJohn, on 01/12/2009, -0/+8Everyone is mentioning "Oh, maybe he didn't want to pay the health care bills," or "Oh, trauma doesn't make you think straight"...
This is pretty clear cut to me...The article says the collision was between a truck and 'several parked vehicles'. Last time i checked, most incidents involving crashes with parked vehicles involve an impaired driver. The guy was either drunk or on drugs, and when he realized that he'd be in serious legal trouble if he went to the hospital (because they'd find him impaired), he acted irrationally, pulled a gun, and tried to get away... Either that, or he was a crack dealer (who the hell else carries a gun in their waistband in Edmonton?) - b3and1p, on 01/11/2009, -0/+8Wow I never even knew you could volunteer to do that kinda stuff. I am in Los Angeles and looking up some info to see what it is all about. Thanks1
- SRSco, on 01/11/2009, -5/+13Big deal. When the paramedics show up they charge you tons of money. It's best to scare them away with a gun and get your health meter back up by either eating a hotdog from a street vendor or heading up to South Bohan and finding a whore to nail. That's how I do it.
- TheAbdBoy, on 01/12/2009, -0/+7Virtually nothing. It's normally covered under our health care plans.
- newtondave, on 01/11/2009, -0/+7Auto accidents are more unusual than auto not-accidents, and every scene is different. People react in *many*, many different ways after having been in an accident, and a patient trying to fight you off (although I never had a gun pulled on me) is not at all unheard of.
- saucercrab, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8I could understand this happening in the U.S.. Keeping the paramedics as far away as possible could actually save you thousands upon thousands of dollars here, thanks to our failed health care system. I know of a family that had to sell their house to pay for a flight to the ER. What's the point of having your life saved if you end up losing everything you have worked for anyway?
- inactive, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6Were you poking her in the urethra?
- OriginalReplica, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6If this had happened in the USA, I would have said he was simply defending himself from robbery. How much do ambulance rides cost in Canada?
- inactive, on 01/11/2009, -0/+5"NO, I will NOT turn my head and cough!"
- c010rb1indusa, on 01/11/2009, -0/+5Maybe he's trying to hide something? Obviously not the gun haha
- Fhwqhgads, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4@akchrs:
Yeah. We pay taxes to make sure every human being in the country is covered. Notice that term "human being". We value them up here. There is not a price attached to them, other than the operating costs for the system which is what the taxes are for.
Nobody loses their house, nobody gets charged more than anyone else, nobody has to worry about being able to afford it and left to rot if they can't, nobody is refused due to "pre-existing conditions" or for some other ***** reason the insurance company finds to refuse payment, and the cost is actually less than you guys pay overall.
Keep swallowing your propaganda that says your profit-driven system is so awesome and so cheap!
You can keep it.
Really. You can have it. - peteyb1313, on 01/11/2009, -0/+4swing and a miss
- Denominator88, on 01/12/2009, -1/+5Didn't this happen in last week's episode of House?
- dwninjungleland, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Scene Safety! BSI! Come on guys...
- artwithbyte, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3I dugg you up just for being awesome. Thanks for being a volunteer.
- derek20cali, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3But I thought Canadian healthcare was free?!
- Typhoon2009, on 01/11/2009, -1/+4lulz I wanna be a firefighter.
- jcroweall7, on 01/11/2009, -2/+5Dugg for insisting on being self-sufficient.
- CalgaryJohn, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Last time i checked, its around $170 ever 4 months...but don't quote me on that.
Also, they've eliminated Alberta health care premiums as of 2009 (woohoo!) - jasonh1234, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3I assumed it did happen in the States for this reason. In Canada... the only explanation is paranoid schizophrenic or something. Health care is practically free here.
- rheaume, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3See, if all paramedics had guns this type of tragedy would never happen.
- Sparky1980, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3I see what you didn't do there.
- GeyserShitdick, on 01/12/2009, -1/+4This story was being used as an example of the different, unpredictable problems that can face ambulance dudes. He is in no way suggesting that having a gun pulled on you by an accident survivor is common.
- 83JB, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2why did this get dugg down? I admitted my mistake!
- jasonh1234, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2Really? I find Americans with guns far more terrifying.
- shoppingkart, on 01/11/2009, -1/+3Stop touching my special area!!
- inactive, on 01/11/2009, -3/+5They don't charge you in Canada, and thats where this happened.
- hulkamaniaz, on 01/12/2009, -0/+245 bucks for an emergency ambulance ride
- 007brendan, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2So I guy wakes up with in the back of a strange vehicle with people stripping him down and sticking things in him. Of course he freaked out.
- OutpostNetwork, on 01/11/2009, -2/+4Those crazy Canadians.
- LegendX, on 01/12/2009, -0/+2I never could understand people when it comes to their health. Here is a nice example: In my hospital we do not perform drug screens on patients for legal reasons what so ever only for treating purposes only. Yet these patients somehow like to think they will go to prison if we find anything. We don't know what is actually wrong with you. Every test is a building block to finally finding out what is really causing the symptoms. Those kind of people only waste our time. Here where I live if someone doesn't want to be treated a simple signature on a few paperwork from either the patient or the family (if the patient is unresponsive). It is only when the patient is unconscious and no family is around that then we have to put them into the ambulance and send them to the hospital. Send word out to your neighbors about this. I hate wasting my time on patients like this. There is no need to use violence. If you are responsive to be able to read and sign paperwork and do not want to be treated then don't waste our time.
- 007brendan, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1*****. Health professionals are arrogant bastards when it comes to other people's opinions. It's a chore just to NOT receive treatment.
- Julian88888888, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1you cannot though, you're on digg.
