I didnt know the koran was a part of "everything" you need for a terrorist bombing. - meggani, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28Yeah..I was just wondering what a Koran has to do with bombs. Perhaps the pages are explosive.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Should we prevent Bible carrying people from boarding flights because they might bomb an abortion clinic? Only Christians do that so that makes sense according to your logic right?
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I'm sorry but implying that the only "terrorists" in the world are Muslim's is a jackass thing to do. The IRA, ETA, KKK, ELF are just some notable groups called "terrorists" that aren't muslim. And I put that word in quotes because of the way people tend to use it only when it benefits them or their ideology. For example, when Al Qaeda was doing the exact same thing they're doing now to the Russians 15 years ago they were called "freedom fighters." Now they're doing the exact same thing to us (expelling foreign occupiers) but we now call it "terrorism."
Here's the dictionary definition:
"The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons."
The legality of the Iraq War has been challenged. Does that make us terrorists? What about street gangs? What were the American revolutionaries?
That word is just a matter of perspective is the point. - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20@ViperDaimao
Some in the group of "terrorists" who were plotting to bomb the Sears Tower in Chicago were attendees of the United Christian Outreach. And what about Timothy McVeigh? The Unibomber? KKK? Neo-Nazi's?
Jackass - techiedavid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Wow. All this and the TSA issued a statement saying its screeners "acted in accordance with their training and protocols." and the FBI "It was looked at and deemed a non-event,"
I guess an 'event' would be that someone had already hidden explosives for him somewhere else to finish his little project.
Nice to know that it is still a waste of time to go through security screening. - misterpurple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11How is the "Koran" in this story relevant?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Why in the world wouldn't we profile?
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I was under the distinct impression that the IRA was Catholic (or was it Protestant?). That McVeigh was protestant, as was the Unabomber. Those guys protesting at Army funerals? Fundamentalist Christians. The Tamil Tigers? Buddhists, believe it or not.
Terrorism has no religion. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Agreed, terrorism is carried out by individuals. But there is an ideology which links these individuals into groups -- usually an ideology of JIhad against the infidel, a specificially Islamic idea. I mean, individuals fought in the Nazi army, but there was also an ideology knitting them together called Nazism. That's why I believe it is both fair and appropriate to speak about the ideology of our enemies -- they certainly do. After every terror attack, they issue a release saying this has been done for Allah and on behalf of the Muslim nation.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Digg is becoming populated with stupid, predjudice people.
- Mace37, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8And yet I didn't see any planes blowing up on the news so I guess these screeners did their job well. Maybe we should throw them in GitMo anyways? Who cares if they didn't do anything, they're muslim so they MUST be terrorists, right?
- jadecristal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7He did nothing wrong. The fact that certain things were funny, in absence of any presence of explosive residue, it NOT cause to detain someone. Regardless of what they look like. Lying about the laptop in his bag might be reason to detain for "obstruction," but still...
- DucoNihilum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4His shoe was hollowed out, lied, and had a alarm clock (associated with bombs). If he wasn't planning something then he was obviously trying to cause problems... Or is that something you regularly do, you know, hollow out your shoes, lie about laptops, etc?

Racism"
not all people who read the quran are a single race. in fact, civils' comment seems more racist than vipers - BetaMe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is possibly a test, to gather information on how tight the security check is.
Call me a paranoid, but nobody is pointing out the possibility so I'm doing it. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Because a bomber without a bomb was caught with it.
it's kinda like the terrorists that never terrorized anyone.
http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/nation/14990832.htm - DucoNihilum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Guys, stop profiling. Why cant a man bring a pseudo bomb on a plane in peace?!
- malorkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd just like to point out that people plotting to bomb a plane might, just might, do a few test runs beforehand. They might know that explosives are scanned for and be curious to how much of the rest of what they need can be brought onboard without arousing suspicion. The explosives could be handled more carefully later in the real plot. Brought onboard via a different means, or made from household chemicals that arouse less suspicion.
The Koran is relevent as additional circumstantial evidence simply because many Muslim terrorists tend to pray before a suicide mission. - nolanistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This really upsets me, because I want to catch terrorists of all kinds, we know at the moment the main breed are fundamentalist muslims, but profiling goes against every fibre of my being and hurts so many, but in the end would save so many. It would greatly sadden me if we let our political-correctness hinder our fight against terrorism.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5no your just racist against muslims.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6You're right. Your clearly acknowledge that these so called terrorists are merely a fringe group that happen to be muslim and reflect no more on your average muslim than abortion bombers do on the average christian.
How did I miss that? - geekchic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can you give me a numerical count as to how many muslim terrorists there have been over, say the past 20 years - and a comparitive statement as to how many non-muslim terrorists there have been ?
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Also, tell me this if someone with "all the components of (a bomb) except the explosive itself," also carrying a bible were hanging around an abortion clinic would you find that suspicious? And wouldnt the fact that they had a bible be relevant to the story?
- geekchic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To those who supported the "profiling" angle to this - I present the following profile:
Young British adult, was educated in the Middle East, and has visited Libya, parts of Asia and Pakistan.
Incidentally, its me - a young white, middle class Brit who's father was an air conditioning engineer. I guess the profiling is why I was nearly strip searched when trying to board a plane at New York a couple of years ago - and why my passport was checked several times - including after I had actually boarded the plane.
Maybe they couldn't understand how a white person could turn up in their profiling system. - BetaMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Or perhaps it is a test .. to see if there is tight security check.. they just want to gather some information about the security checking process.
..call me paranoid. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought it was "Qur'an."
...And you've gotta love how all our airports have managed to do with all of their security upgrades is to be as effective as they were 5 years ago, except now they're twice the pain in the ass. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3what does matter is that ten people have already asked that very same question in the comments here, and none of them felt the need to drop the f-bomb..
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Civil, care to explain what is racist about stating facts? Explain why you're race baiting (this is besides the fact that no one is even talking about a race).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_organizations_involved_in_religious_terrorism
Tell me, which list is longer? I said most were muslim, not that all. I clearly acknowledge that there are/were people who used terror that were other religions (though it was usually for seperate reasons not too closely tied to those religions). And I've never even suggested or thought that all muslims are terrorists, that would simply be ridiculous. Just as ridiculous of race baiting like you. - geekchic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Americans try to win wars."
I think the last country to try and "lose" a war was the Duchy of Grand Fenwick. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't understand your point. Americans try to win wars. We don't appease. We leave that to the French.
- esteban, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But how would the explosives get on the plane? If we are detecting clocks and shoes then surely we should be able to detect something like explosives, X-ray machines, dogs and chemical sniffers all work to find explosives.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, this disappeared from the Homepage within 10 minutes. Looks like "social censorship" is acting to remove any articles that challenge the PC orthodoxy here on DIGG. Sad.
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@echoparkdirt, if anything it's willful blindness - but only as much as justice (and judgements) should be.
Terrorism is carried out by individuals, not by a religion, a nationality or a race. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's an interesting idea.. seriously.
It would explain why the officer was relieved of duty. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If profiling is the reason they check passports multiple times and do strip searches, I guess they are also profiling against white american kids like me who were born in arizona.
- BetaMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Country of origin, ethnicity, religion, or books in possession must be in consideration at some point. And I thik liberals can embrace the idea.
It is true that some islamic extremests are calling for jihad against the U.S. Ignoring that would not help the security.
Of course, it is a dangerous practice, so security personel have to be professional and polite. What's needed is not to ignore those potential clues, but to train security check people to prevent discrimination or improper treatment of certain ethnic group, have oversight system in place, etc.
I think majority of the muslims would feel better that way. After all, muslims and others are all alike in that they do not want to die in an exploding plane. - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Civil
Yes I can understand that point, and can debate it back and forth with you in a ratioal discussion. However, that does not excuse you from calling me racist. Such ugly tactics do nothin but stifle debate and are not condusive to a civil discussion. Plus, I just don't appreciate having my words twisted around and being labled as a racist. - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you. I and others have tried to point out the simple fact that most terrorists are muslims. This isnt conjecture, its statistics. For our truthfulness, I've been called racists and told that what I'm really saying is that all muslims are terrorists. I for one, am not saying that at all, and to get that idea from what I said is bad logic at best.
Simply look at this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_organizations_involved_in_religious_terrorism and tell me which list is longer? Is pointing out facts and statistics now racist? Seriously, I dont understand the thought process of you people slinging around the term racist. - Kazenodeku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If there was, what the hell would the use of the shoes be?
Also, the security should have gotten any explosives someone was carrying, if there was anyone carrying.
Suspicious? Hell yes. Grounds for not letting him on or detaining him? No. - DucoNihilum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lying should have been enough to hold him.
- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hollow out my shoes everytime I fly... Makes me feel even lighter up in the air...What?
- Civil44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1are you going to answer my question or avoid it?
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Civil, your link makes little sense in the context of the question I asked of you. Please try to state your case logically and I will respond.
The majority of terrorists in the world are muslim. True or false?
The majority of terrorist attacks in the last decade have been from people calling themselves muslims. True or false?
If true, why does saying as such mean I am a racist, or religious persecutionist or whatever you like?
If false, please educate me to all these terrorist groups and attacks I missed and I'll concede the point. - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not avoiding it, I'm simply not making the argument you're ascribing to me.
Read what I've said in this thread. All I said was this:
Most terrorists now are muslims.
A lot of people asked what a koran had to do with "terrorist bombing". I supplied my answer. Then my answer was called racist. I'm not saying round up all muslims and put them into camps. I'm not saying stop every person with a koran going into an airport. I'm saying, most terrorists today are muslim.
Are all muslims terrorists? No of course not. Maybe you don't think of the terrorists religion as "true islam". I will concede that. It is a sick twisted perversion of the religion, rooted in medieval barbarism. Call it Jihadism, Islamofascism, call it Wahabbism if you want to specify the subset of islam they belong to, but a subset of islam it is. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oddly enough, I'm a brown Indian man who doesn't shave (yeah, I have that kinda beard after 2 weeks), and I've never been stopped. Not once. Not even that time I was scowling like crazy because some woman cut me off on the way to the airport. Maybe it's the glasses? Or the Woody Woodpecker t-shirt?
Of course, they always pull over the little old lady behind me. I wonder what's up with that? It's not like I asked her to carry anything illegal for me. O *****! I forgot I asked her to hold my hash brownies for me! - DucoNihilum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Occam's razor
Maybe he was santa, delivering stuff to poor kids, we shouldn't arrest him! - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The link was meant to show that even if most terrorist's are Muslims the VAST majority are in fact not terrorists."
I agree, and I have never suggested otherwise. What is your point? And why call me a racist?
"f we were to start saying ok ONLY muslims commit terrorism. And suddenly chechnya warlords commit terrorism(which has happend before) can we still say that we can only single out muslims?"
Bad example since Chechens are predominately sunni muslims.
So I have to wonder why you are responding to arguments I have never made. I would advise you to please go back and carefully read what I wrote. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Islam is a religion, not a race, and Muslims come in every color. Calling someone "racist" for acknowledging the Muslim contribution to world terror is moronic, but widespread in leftist/Islamist circles.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Different spellings, depending on how the word is translated.
