- gaqua, on 11/26/2008, -2/+438Everyone knows Mordor is New Zealand's largest city.
- random12345, on 11/26/2008, -3/+207One does not simply WALK INTO MORDOR
- asgardshill, on 11/26/2008, -34/+180If this had happened in the US, Roof Thief would have turned around and sued the billboard operator for defamation, identity theft, and invasion of privacy.
And won. - MrRedneck, on 11/26/2008, -5/+128"Wellington, New Zealand's largest city."
Yeah, no. We live in the Wikipedia age, people. - Alphabet, on 11/26/2008, -4/+89In the US, truth overrides any defamation claim. It's in a public area so it can't be invasion of privacy. And it's not identify theft since no identity is being stolen or impersonated.
stop trying to over sensationalize crap - ross., on 11/26/2008, -4/+64Dangerous? He stole a couple of transformers while no one was watching. Hardly a big tough man, more like a common coward.
And it get even better when I tell you that's only $273 American dollars. - gaqua, on 11/26/2008, -6/+63...and even then, you have to have the accent.
Orc and Auck sound very different in the US accent.
Because there's a ***** R in the first one. - Silj, on 11/26/2008, -0/+47This billboard is literally two minutes walk from my house, can confirm it's located in Auckland.
- KiwiMark, on 11/26/2008, -1/+42He stole them in Wellington and they put the billboards up in Auckland? They need a bit of fact checking.

Dug for New Zealand. - Speed, on 11/26/2008, -8/+38Wouldn't have happened since someone would've been guarding the roof and shot the *****.
- wyrdness, on 11/26/2008, -2/+31All of the Orcs in NZ live in Auckland.
I guess that joke works better when spoken. - migshark, on 11/26/2008, -1/+28Yes you can, just edit the wiki info.
- RishiAD, on 11/26/2008, -6/+31Why didn't the guy who took the pictures just call the cops? Guess this makes for a better story though.
- Pusod, on 11/26/2008, -3/+28I FOUND HIM!!!

Pay me bitch! - patm1987, on 11/26/2008, -1/+24The theif could very well of been there for legitimate business (ie, fixing or replacing a transformer), and had a pretty official looking orange vest if you ask me. The photographer probably noticed a fairly suspicious looking but possibly legitimate person fooling around with some fancy machinery and decided to verify with Venter after reflecting on the whole situation. I'd feel much sillier if I had called the cops on a billboard technician than if I photographed the "technician" in question and brought it up later in a less official situation.
- BillMoocho, on 11/26/2008, -0/+21What do you think would be more effective:
a) Send the police the picture and hope their small numbers manage to catch him IF they even bother looking
or
b) Putting it on a billboard where thousands of people would see it each day (maybe co-workers, friends, enemies) and offer $500 for his information. - Zippo, on 11/26/2008, -2/+22Billbowned.
- jeremyosborne81, on 11/26/2008, -0/+20Isn't that what happens when you get pwned by Bilbo?
- EggNogIceCream, on 11/26/2008, -0/+19I always knew that camo went well with bright orange.
- jtbell04, on 11/26/2008, -1/+20A most thorough owning, in my humble opinion.
- geoken, on 11/26/2008, -0/+18Maybe they edited it, but it now says ".....around Aukland, New Zealand's largest city"
- wiirdo, on 11/26/2008, -3/+19They meant to say $700 billion.
- Joeblogs, on 11/26/2008, -0/+16"Rule number one of burglary is 'don't get yourself photographed'."
Dugg for Douglas Adams quote!
No matter if it was intentional, not, or simple plagiarism! - runningamok, on 11/26/2008, -1/+16While it might be interesting to read how this ad deformed his character, I think he'd have a more convincing legal argument with "defamation" of character.
- nivekious, on 11/26/2008, -7/+22Only $500 to turn in a potentially dangerous criminal?
- Erectile, on 11/26/2008, -0/+12If someone is suspicious of someone else, they might think they are up to something.
That's what suspicious means. - megarobotguy, on 11/26/2008, -0/+12Only if that were in Texas.
- tacojohn48, on 11/26/2008, -0/+11As a child I had to wonder what price I would turn my Dad in for.
- shitdigga, on 11/26/2008, -2/+12"DUGG" with a double "G" mate....as in "SHEEP" with a double "E".
- Lynx77777, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9Would you sell your mate for $500?
I wouldn't, $1000 however... - aaabbbsss, on 11/26/2008, -1/+10You're what's wrong with this world. Should we really expect more than $500, or ANYTHING at all for that matter, to turn in a crook? We should do it for free as a society; not think that they're not paying you well enough!
- jun2san, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9That was quite possibly the nerdiest comment I have ever laughed at.
- gaqua, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8What was the temperature of said roof? Would you classify it as cool, warm, or hot?
Also, had you seen any sorts of local animals on the roof? Dogs or cats or squirrels?
We have reason to believe you know the answer to these questions. - TheMachine1, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8Should have said "Wanted Dead or Alive".
- JamalJenkins, on 11/26/2008, -7/+15Pwned.
- DiggMasterJ, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8He's in the UK now? sly bastard.
- Lunarsight, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8Chris - I think it's more the principle of the matter. Even if it would be less expensive to just replace the equipment, they definitely wanted to hang this guy out to dry, and I don't blame them.
Now that the image is posted online as well, I think the proverbial days of this thief are numbered. - ChileanGoD, on 11/26/2008, -5/+12@random12345... I like this one better:
http://www.timtripcony.com/blog.nsf/Images/TTRY-7G ... - serif69, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8No, it's what happens when you get boned by Bilbo.
Bend over, Jeremy, it's time for some hot gay halfling sex. - ross., on 11/26/2008, -0/+7While he thought no one was watching them :P
- Navicerts, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8They probably lost more than 500 in revenue with the displaced ad's.
- pfmagic, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6He thought they were robots (in disguise).
- raarky, on 11/26/2008, -1/+7hmm.. i smell clever ad campaign
- Crucible1001, on 11/26/2008, -1/+7It is 500 dollars for a name. I don't see how it would be traced back to you.
- ethanator1088, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6This is one of the coolest ideas Ever! I hope no one flips the billboard guy off on the freeway. This is way too much power to wield :-)
- tacojohn48, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6This wasn't in the US; that changes the legal landscape that applies to the case.
- NickFrenzy, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6I wish I could digg you twice.
You win sir. - iFrikkenR, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6they think to sell the copper from the windings. The copper being worth a few hundred dollars, the transformers as transformers being worth about $6000
- abadjay, on 11/26/2008, -1/+6he probably wanted the transformers for an upgrade for his Tesla coil
- dotMH, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Transform and roll out!
