- implied, on 01/05/2008, -0/+74Thats it? I produce that much trash in a month... not even including my Digg comments.
- 10goto10, on 01/05/2008, -0/+52Why did he put that man with the trash? He still looks fresh.
- eschompthis, on 01/05/2008, -1/+31the picture shows no more than a month of trash, i want to truly see how much an entire year is
- roedwards86, on 01/05/2008, -3/+32I once saved my feces for a year and it nearly filled my whole garage...
- smrekar, on 01/05/2008, -1/+20did he flush his toilet tissue or save that too?
- Tamriel, on 01/05/2008, -0/+19That's only half as much as you!
- jquipp, on 01/05/2008, -4/+21I'm sure it smells wonderful!
- green1, on 01/05/2008, -4/+20Wow -- I also bet he got no action for a year.
- active1x0, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8Did...did you just zing yourself?
- Topher06, on 01/05/2008, -2/+10So now what? Why is this inspirational? We all generate garbage, some guy decided to horde it rather then dumping it. I am all for reducing our waste and recycling it but I can't stand garbage like this (pardon the pun), eHippies thinking they are going to change the world with a single picture and online blurb. Its all going to end up in recycling so what point did this guy make? That some Berkeley caterer saved 96 cubic feet of garbage. He is rather an eHyppie because he is hypocritcal against the messaqe he is trying to make. What everone seems to miss the point about all this is he is a CATERER, you know, someone that makes food for hire. I bet the garbage that a single catering job produces is far more then what this guy saved up in a year. His job is directly related to the rampant consumerism he is trying to make us aware of, people hiring other people to make food (and the associated waste) for such sensless reasons as a party. He could do more to save the environment by quitting his job then lack luster mediocre ploys such as this that guilable people eat up.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8You can donate trash?
- RepublicansSuck, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8What's sad is that half the stuff I can spot in the pictures is recyclable...
- rhabd0mancer, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8I once saved my newspapers for a year. The stack was over 6' tall.
- TrevorBradley, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8There will come a day on the Earth where we will be unable to mine any more new resources from the ground; our only remaining resources will be our landfills, renewables, and the sun.
- Topher06, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6He threw out 6 broken Xbox360 the year before this so it never counted.
- digitaloxygen, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6Actually it probably doesn't smell at all.
FTA: "... He composts his food scraps"
It's basically just paper and platic. - jmpeagle, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6that's it? One week of the Washington Post is about 6-8 inches high. It would be well over 25 feet for a whole year.
- bob555, on 01/05/2008, -0/+696 cubic feet, so a block about 4 and a half feet in each direction...that has to be in the bottom 1% of the country. Of course if I had to live with my own trash for a year, I wouldn't produce much of it either.
- Spart666, on 01/05/2008, -0/+6about how many courics would that be?
- mdavis, on 01/05/2008, -4/+9Is that a Zune I see in there?
- cusoman, on 01/05/2008, -3/+7News.... paper? I know not of what you speak.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3"Derfel said he eventually hopes to donate his accumulated waste to a sculptor."
That's cheating and trash sculptures usually end up back in the garbage because they do not last long or nobody wants to keep them. - ChazHollywood, on 01/05/2008, -1/+4Here's my very scientific analysis:
96 cubic feet of trash x 300 million Americans = 28,800,000,000 cubic feet.
28,800,000,000 cubic feet in cubic miles = .195654896
Therefore a years worth of the nations trash would take up about a cube measuring about 1,033 feet on each side - Not including compacting and degrading of waste. Doesn't sound like that much. - mrfunktastic, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3Where is Berkley? Besides, the people of Berkeley can afford to think about such high minded things as global awareness, since we know you've got aliens and politicians all taken care of, livefr33.
- wattersm, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3They do make vegan butter, ya know.
- cyranthus, on 01/05/2008, -0/+3"I cant believe its not butter!"
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2dyson sphere?
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2we've actually already started mining landfills.
There are quite a few companies that mine covered over, or "capped" landfills for fuel gas. I believe there are even some mineral recovery operations in place for metals and such (although i think this is usually still more expensive than "raw" mining, and only used in special circumstances) - themastersb, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2I'd have to say I make that much trash each month too.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -2/+4And 4 RRoD xbox360s too.
- KingGorilla, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2I say we cover the entire 6.088×1018 m² of the sun with solar panels and put together 92,955,820.5 miles worth of extension chords that connects the solar panels to a huge battery on earth
- KingGorilla, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2read the article. He composts his food scraps
and he's a vegan. its in his blog - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2I think my family puts out that much trash in a month or 2.
- SystemError, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2they did say trash :)
- mrfunktastic, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2He'll be so crushed.
- JasonsLan, on 01/05/2008, -0/+2if i had to live with my trash, I'd eat out, ***** at work, party at other people's houses, shower at the gym, and only sleep in my own place..
- idconvict, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1.19 cubic miles != a cube with sides 1033ft
a box with size 1mile x 1mile x .19 miles would be big enough to fit
or a cube with sides ~.57 miles or so - LembasBread, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1"Derfel said he eventually hopes to donate his accumulated waste to a sculptor."
If there is so much trash, wouldn't a sculptor be able to find free trash just fine? - inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Judging from his trash, he's not a vegan. Vegetarian maybe, but strictly vegan, no.
I see egg packages, yogurt containers, and butter packages. And these are "fake" soy products either, it's real egg and dairy, from real chickens and cows. He is a caterer, so perhaps this is trash from his business, but if this was both his and his business trash it seems like there should be more. - Jeffiner25, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Please tell me this is just part of it! Seems there should be 20x that amount of he was actually saving it all for a year
- omgwhat, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1this was just the excuse he used when his girlfriend finally saw his apartment and how he lives like a pig.
"It's an experiment!" - wiirdo, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1How do you find an artist who wants your trash? Craigslist?
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1but there are actual, genuine, chicken menstruation dozen packs in some of his garbage photos
- KingGorilla, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1If we can get everybody to do this we would drastically reduce the amount of waste we produce! I'm such a genius
- dezmo, on 01/05/2008, -1/+2Before that happens we will be mining other planets and will designate all of Earth to be a natural reserve.
- wankelrotary, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1Well, I'm definitely turning down his dinner invitation now.
- roedwards86, on 01/05/2008, -0/+142
- topace3000, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1So... he proved that we actually generate a lot less trash than we thought!?
- boflaade, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Amazing. Amazing that it makes news. I live in a rural area where trips to the dump/recyclers are done usually once a year. Cans are cleaned and crushed, cardboard and paper are bundled, plastics that can't be recycled are bagged (feed bags). Food waste other then meat, is put in the compost bin. The meat scraps, if not used in soups/stews, are frozen until garbage day. This is NORMAL unless you live in a city, I guess.
- fraggle35, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1I don't see any used toilet paper.
