- elosorusso, on 04/08/2008, -4/+373I myself often try to game the system after paying $157 for groceries by stealing $4 worth of assorted items. Take that, supermarket.
- Van3ck, on 04/08/2008, -2/+287That must have been one bored Security Guard... I suppose he can sleep soundly now knowing he is grocery store hero.
- Octosink, on 04/08/2008, -5/+225I hope he got roughed up. It's people like him that are giving this country a bad name. Forgetting to pay for a case of soda. Yeah right. We all know he needed that extra $4 for crank.
- mnemy, on 04/08/2008, -2/+219You know, the gas spent to haul him off to jail probably cost more than $4. I wonder how much bail was, and how much the city ends up paying to process the retarded charges.
- CannedMango, on 04/08/2008, -0/+147The guy clearly doesn't know how to spot a soda-pop shakedown.
This happens to me all the time... you give the cop half the pop and you get to go home. Only idiots go to jail. - inactive, on 04/08/2008, -3/+106What an ass! He said he forgot and had the money to pay for it. The guard should have told him to go back and pay for the soda and that would be the end of the story!
- TheAstronomer, on 04/08/2008, -2/+103He was probably going to use the soda to lure kids into his van
- rkho, on 04/08/2008, -39/+137You must surely mean "Only in America".
- lazerus9, on 04/08/2008, -12/+108I still want to know what happened to the nearly $3 trillion dollars that went missing from the Pentagon budget that Rumsfeld was testifying about to congress on September 10th 2001?
Maybe it was under his shopping cart? - Asberry, on 04/08/2008, -1/+63This story feels like it's missing something.... A taser! That's it. It's missing a taser.
- Falldog, on 04/08/2008, -3/+46Since when do police officers work security for a grocery store?
- Zarokima, on 04/08/2008, -1/+43But at least some good, honest American will get to enjoy a legally-purchased case of soda pop! And in the end, isn't that was justice is all about?
- Deveak, on 04/08/2008, -4/+46Ohio? Not Florida? this is strange, I thought Florida had a monopoly on stupid.
- Drahkar, on 04/08/2008, -2/+41One wishes. Unfortunately this level of stupidity is rampant all across the country and the world.
- BN2L, on 04/08/2008, -4/+41Poor bastard
- BinaryDelt, on 04/08/2008, -2/+38I guarantee he thought "All right! Some action!" and was totally pumped he'd get to use his walkie and say "over".
I ***** hate security guards. - wolfofwar, on 04/08/2008, -3/+34...When security finally wrestled the man to the ground they promptly tazed him repeatedly. He is currently being held for questioning indefinitely in Guantanamo Bay.
- Wolfie351, on 04/08/2008, -0/+30I'm fine with this as long as I can have an employee arrested for ringing up my groceries wrong
- eyepatch100, on 04/08/2008, -8/+36Really? I got out of the 4-dollar-pop-scam game a long time ago because of the huge risk involved... and I'm glad I did.
- Railz, on 04/08/2008, -7/+33No, he definitely means Only in Ohio.
- HydrogenOxide, on 04/08/2008, -4/+30Ever heard of the reply button?
- HaloZero, on 04/08/2008, -0/+25The cop's reasoning is idiotic. He compared it to a bank robbery. wtf
- SonicAD, on 04/08/2008, -2/+27Dammit, you just gave me the idea for a new video game.
GROCERY STORE HERO!
Complete with realistic scan & bag simulation! - Sonic84, on 04/08/2008, -8/+32it should be the clerks responsibility to check B.O.B. (bottom of baskart) not the customer.
- Akairenn, on 04/08/2008, -2/+25So what's the price of three hours of your time? Nothing to get worked up about? The pigs of Ohio just threw this man in jail for a few hours. Nothing to get worked about? Are you daft?
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -4/+26=! != !=
- Wartz, on 04/08/2008, -3/+21http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/3061/sodadk2.jp ...
- MikeSD34, on 04/08/2008, -0/+18I store my laptop in my troggledop all the time. (Pretend it's American slang guys, he'll never know). /sarcasm
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -2/+20You think it's "very possible" he spent $157 to cover a $4 theft?
- hipnerd, on 04/08/2008, -3/+20"You must surely mean "Only in America"." =! "anti-American rant"
Time to switch to decaf, Warglas. - supermanred, on 04/09/2008, -0/+17Woah, chill out a bit and maybe you wont need that pistol.
- f4nt0m4s, on 04/08/2008, -0/+16This is why they usually have an employee monitoring the self-check out machines, so that people don't forget stuff or [more realistically in the eyes of the store] don't steal stuff. This case can immediately be ruled bogus because the guy bought 157 dollars worth of groceries. When I was a cashier people forgot stuff on the bottom of the cart ALL THE TIME. I don't doubt that it was occasionally premeditated, I mean if you can get away with not paying for a case of beer or soda than more power to you, but I generally think that people put stuff in the bottom of the cart and just don't think about it again. In fact, when I was leaving Jewel one day I found a cart in the parking lot with a 24-pack of beer left under it, some poor soul forgot their booze. Anyway, I worked in a grocery store for a year and a half and it can be the most boring job on earth at times. So, I don't doubt that this security guard was a typical bored, anti-customer (you also learn to hate customers...ugghh) loser just looking to pick a fight.
I'm sure this case will get dropped in court and this guy will have a new found resentment for store security guys. - gharding, on 04/08/2008, -3/+19This is confusing. A story reported in Kentucky about a Cleveland man in Brooklyn.. Ohio.
- BinaryDelt, on 04/08/2008, -3/+19I hate security guards. Give them a flashlight and a badge and they think they can do anything. Why doesn't anyone use their ***** head anymore? If he's spending $150+, he's not trying to steal a $4 case of pop. Plus, it was on the bottom of the cart. I know I've almost forgotten stuff on the bottom of my cart many times. Am I a criminal? Um, no. I would've thrown 5 bucks at that guy and told him to ***** himself.
- eyepatch100, on 04/08/2008, -1/+15Rucksack? Really?
- objectcode, on 04/08/2008, -0/+14by that time you were home free so you went straight home
- landosystem, on 04/08/2008, -1/+15next time do what I do, and keister the soda...
- Darrelc, on 04/08/2008, -0/+14Depends, are you brazilian?
- Niightwitch, on 04/09/2008, -0/+13Did you forget your manila envelope?
- kylere, on 04/08/2008, -1/+14Many police officers work off duty hours as rent a cops. They usually are CCW or at least carry permitted and companies like the fact that they have an "in" with the local PD. Not to mention, sometimes it is hard to put down that attitude with only 40 hours a week to express it :-)
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/08/2008, -0/+12Did you return back to pay for it?
- Ducttape38, on 04/08/2008, -0/+12Heh, that reminds me.
I was in the London airport last week, and almost walked out of a touristy gift shop thing holding some gift worth about 15$ under my arms. I came about 2 ft from the exit, realized I had it, and then put it back. It makes me wonder what would have happened if I had forgotten... - Ozzsanity, on 04/08/2008, -2/+14He should let the checkers do the job next time. I would say that at least half the time the checkers at our local store forget to look at the bottom of the cart.
- xenoc1de, on 04/08/2008, -0/+12Actually they are advised not to charge if the theft is under $100 or something like that. It is up to the store to make any final decision though.
- inactive, on 04/08/2008, -1/+13i have a hard time believing this actually happened.
- R3dRabbit, on 04/08/2008, -2/+13I once walked out of home depot with a toilet tank under the shopping cart.... I did realized it until I was at my car.
- TKardinal, on 04/08/2008, -4/+14Maybe he forgot...maybe he didn't...all we have, right now, is his word for it. So just like the cops shouldn't jump to conclusions that he's guilty, let's not jump tot he conclusion he's innocent either.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/08/2008, -0/+10Just digg me down. I forgot that he checked himself out.
- sagat, on 04/08/2008, -0/+10If he was ethnic they would have shot him.
- Spuy767, on 04/09/2008, -0/+10YOu are aware that the encarceration of any criminal costs money, regardless of the crime, and only white collar offenses, where the restitution is in the form of cash, does a municipality stand to possibly break even?
