- Awwzm, on 11/04/2009, -2/+77I don't see the fun in using a laser pointer on a plane.
- Xaevier, on 11/04/2009, -1/+71How on earth did they even catch him? Was he standing on the runway aiming for these planes or something?
- SimonWatson, on 11/04/2009, -21/+74I like the part were they lied about the lazer hitting the pilot in the eye.
- kingmanic, on 11/04/2009, -3/+53Lasers aren't a perfectly tight beam so at longer distances they diverge. It's not hard to think a beam at 2000ft would be large enough to fill the entire field of view for a pilot as well it bounces readily. So a tiny dot at 50ft becoems a massive beam at 2000ft which can reflect off objects at fairly high intensities..
- veriix, on 11/04/2009, -6/+49FUUCK YOUUUU PLAAAANNNE!!!
- gimmeslack12, on 11/04/2009, -7/+49Messing with the airlines these days is like threatening the President. Seriously, just don't do it. Hope this guy learned a lesson!
- prompel, on 11/04/2009, -13/+50Yeah, a plane crash with 180 fatalities would have been hilarious!
They should have multiplied those 2,5 years by 180. - obsessedglobe, on 11/04/2009, -2/+34Okay, this is one of those rare cases where lasers are not the solution, and are instead the problem.
- zKman, on 11/04/2009, -0/+31Here's what it looks like to get a laser aimed at you when piloting an aircraft:

There are many documented cases of pilots getting temporarily blinded. - Laminarcissus, on 11/04/2009, -3/+29So causing temporary blindness in a pilot in the cockpit of a plane carrying 180 people should have the same punishment as drinking at Disneyland?
- gustasonfrever, on 11/04/2009, -9/+35180 defenseless humans v. however many helpless dogs vick abused
I think every sane human being believes that humans are more valuable than dogs. I don't like what vick did but these two offenses aren't nearly on the same level. You're a little bitch. - aptanalogy, on 11/04/2009, -0/+25This is the reason that I've always wondered why the rebellion doesn't switch to green. Higher expense?
- damnshoes, on 11/04/2009, -0/+22auto aim
- vsujohn2, on 11/04/2009, -0/+20THATS IT! I've had it with these ***** lasers aimed at this ***** plane!
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -0/+19He was probably standing close enough to the airport that the pilots could see him. And i appears he did this more than once. So it is likely they were on the lookout forhim.
- Meltz014, on 11/04/2009, -1/+20I think you mean PRAAAANNNE!!!!!
- frostbyt, on 11/04/2009, -1/+17I don't see the fun at pointing lasers at anyone. Yes consumer grade laser pointers are harmless up to 10 seconds directly pointed into your eye, but that does not mean you should do it. Green lasers are 10x more powerful and should never be pointed at anyone anytime.
- zombiecarlin, on 11/04/2009, -5/+21STUPID!
- PandaBearShenyu, on 11/04/2009, -1/+16I thought he was just pointing it and though it was BS to jail him, but to think that he was deliberately pointing it at the eyes of the pilot, lock him up for life! What an *****.
- lornefs, on 11/04/2009, -1/+16It's only fun to stupid people.
- kingmanic, on 11/04/2009, -5/+19People > Dogs
- Insightful, on 11/04/2009, -5/+18You mean this is what it looks like when the laser hits the camera and the camera zooms INTO the laser.
- JustinNoland, on 11/04/2009, -0/+13High-powered novelty lasers, which can range in power from five to several hundred milliwatts, are capable of shooting a visible beam over several miles before the integrity of the beam is degraded by atmospheric interference.
- Ajajadude, on 11/04/2009, -0/+13There are enough things for passengers to worry about without having to add some ***** on the ground trying to blind the pilot.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/04/2009, -6/+19Okay, so what is the appropriate sentence for making people afraid for their lives and, in the case of pointing it at a pilot, actually putting people in danger?
- sinrtb, on 11/04/2009, -1/+13Most anything to do with Airports The FAA, and DHS is generally ridiculous but I think this is one instance that the dude got what he deserved.
- publiclurker, on 11/04/2009, -0/+12I don't know if this is the case, but I remember one reported incident where they guy lived near the landing approach of an airport. He was in the back yard and they could actually see which house he was at.
- ASSASSYN360, on 11/04/2009, -2/+14pew pew pew
- sinrtb, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11I agree they are harmless if you are sitting on the couch and pointing a red laser in your eye, but it is not nearly as harmless when you are taking a huge bank turn with in a commercial airliner as you drop in to land, and out of nowhere you have a red beam in your eye and that little blue dot covering all of your instruments.
- DevilToo, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10Make them eat an old sandwich.
- bubbachuck, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8jp12380, you make a few assumptions. first, that that the people weren't in any danger. second, that the person was making "a little joke". anyone who points a laser at a plane knows its against the law, that the federal gov't can come down on you hard, and that the reason it's against the law is because it can impair pilot's vision. the guy was obviously pushing his luck.
point is, it's not a black and white comparison between torturing/murdering dogs and endangering human lives. we don't know how much danger the passengers were exactly in. - kingmanic, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10The small pen pointers would be extremely weak at that point. However the High powered ones wouldn't.
They have done studies at many equivalent power ranges and even a pen pointer is distracting enough to cause a significant decrease in pilot performance. The high power ones can get strong enough to outright cause eye damage. - superkendall, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8@aptanalogy - the Empire took all the Green lasers out of the stores, that's why. They aren't called the Empire for nothing.
@inet - at final approach you are not talking several thousand feet. You are looking in some cases at under a thousand feet, you can easily get that close to an incoming jetliner at a lot of airports. - YourMomsAnAnon, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8"and I saw this and my eyes were sprained, the eyes, and I need million for my sprained eyes."
- lornefs, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10And you are wildly unintelligent!
- lornefs, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Some people > some dogs
- superkendall, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7That's true except people are saying the beam scatters too much at distance - no matter how you zoom the lens of a camera is just a few inches wide and it's easily able to overcome the sensor, which fives you some idea what the strength would be hitting a human eye.
- kingmanic, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8A lot of time it's not laser pointers. A lot of times it's high powered hobby lasers.
- lostngone, on 11/04/2009, -4/+11I don't think 2 years is nearly enough. What did this guy think would happen if he pointed a laser at an airplane?
However with laser pointers being almost free these days I think its time to look at some sort of technology to protect pilots from being physically blinded from a laser pointer. - sentry21, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7Including you.
- kingmanic, on 11/04/2009, -6/+13No. Seems proportionate. This is a big problem for the aviation industry and pilots. This is a crime where deterrence will work because a lot of people don't believe it does much. But mischief like this has a drastic effect on pilot performance. A study on it showed that pilot performance decreased by at least 20% when they got flashed for any period of time at any power range. (even if it does not get them int he eye)
They should heavily crack down on this and perhaps even crack down on the manufacturers of some fo the high powered novelty lasers. There isn't a practical use for them except to be a nuisance. - tjanssen1990, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7***** YOU WHALE
***** YOU DOLPHIN - AmnesiacJack, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8Don't punish the innocent because of the guilty.
Seriously. I have a high powered hand held laser (green) that I love. I use it to point out stars and planets to my family and friends late at night.
Just because a douchebag ruins the fun doesn't mean it should be ruined for every one. - inactive, on 11/04/2009, -2/+8BIG difference for 99.999999999999% of hte population between purchasing a laser in a sorre and "popping one out" of a Blu-Ray player and attaching a battery and putting them in a pen flashlight.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -5/+11This is a case of someone justwanting to bitch about the justice system no matter what. He basicaly got 5 days in jail for each person whose life he endangered. Yeah...real excessive.
- CrunchyDeluxe, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6SHHH! Don't tell PETA.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6Planes don't travel at 33,000 feet when they take off and land.
- jerrycan, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6stick to your day job.
- askantik, on 11/04/2009, -3/+8Ok, it's stupid to do that (not to mention, doesn't this guy have something better to do... well I guess he doesn't for the next 2.5 years, but still) but what is crazy is that if this retard can endanger two planes, why don't terrorists have big laser cannons to blind planes? Then they don't even have to fool airport security.
- e73v3n, on 11/04/2009, -1/+6Yeah i agree, if you replace the "laser pointer" part of my comment with "huge NASA super laser"... /s
Spelled laser not laster btw. -
