Stevanoski, on 05/10/2008, -0/+21My wife worked as a nurse at the hospital. A man tried to commit suicide by drinking antifreeze, ethylene glycol, the antidote? Grain alcohol. Every hour they gave him an ounce of vodka until he blew a 0.01 on the Breathalyzer.

Had many hells angel friends over the years, their drink of choice? Vodka mixed with antifreeze. Never realized they probably canceled each other out, IF you got the proportions correct.

  Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) poisoning is typically treated with ethanol, but other treatment strategies do exist. Antifreeze causes damage in the body not directly, but rather by its metabolites generated after ingestion. So, grain alcohol is typically administered because it competes with alcohol dehydrogenase -- the enzyme that converts antifreeze to its toxic metabolites. Alcohol is administered until his ethylene glycol levels drop off. They don't exactly "cancel out." If anything, drinking antifreeze with your vodka would make you drunker because it would allow the alcohol to circulate in your bloodstream longer, depressing your central nervous system (i.e. making you drunk). However, ethylene glycol makes you sick as hell, so I can't imagine they did that too often or drank too much of it because it damages your kidneys.

    - Commodore84, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I was just saying that it doesn't matter how badass you are, no one likes being sick. In fact there is a drug (Antibuse I think) that you can give to alcoholics which makes them sick as can be when they drink. It discourages alcohol abuse obviously.

Says that when testimony was given in court people were leaving "with tears in their eyes." Apparently he thought the cotton would absorb the alcohol. Do you have to be dead to be voted for a Darwin?

Stettler – An 18 year old Stettler man tried to eat his underwear in the hope that the cotton fabric would absorb alcohol before he took a breathalyzer test, provincial court heard this week.

David Zurfluh was subsequently acquitted of a charge of impaired driving because he blew .08, the legal limit.

But the testimony broke up people in Judge David MacNaughton’s provincial court here Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Zurfluh was collared by RCMP Const. Bill Robinson after he ran from his vehicle, which had been weaving down the highway.

While sitting in the back of the patrol car, Mr. Zurfluh said he ripped the crotch out of his shorts, stuffed the fabric in his mouth and then spit it out.

A class of law students from William E Hay Composite High, in court as observers was removed by the teacher when testimony enlivened the proceedings. The Grade 11 and 12 students had difficulty maintaining their composure.

“People were leaving the courtroom with tears in their eyes trying not to laugh” said RCMP Const. Peter Macfarlane.
