- U2groupie, on 11/11/2009, -0/+84Are you sure his name isn't really Arthur Dent?
- Bbanda, on 11/10/2009, -1/+76This guys 6-bedroom house gets leveled and they give him $70k? I dunno about you but I'd ***** murder someone over this, unless the housing market is much different there than one would suspect.
- veins, on 11/11/2009, -1/+49heheh "he searched in panic, but couldn't find his home at all". He searched. odd way of saying he stood where his house should have been and yelled "wtf happened to my house"
- Boblin, on 11/11/2009, -1/+47Prosser: But the plans were on display.
Arthur Dent: On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar.
Prosser: That's the display department.
Arthur Dent: With a torch.
Prosser: The lights had probably gone.
Arthur Dent: So had the stairs.
Prosser: But you did see the notice, didn't you?
Arthur Dent: Oh, yes. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign outside the door saying "Beware of the Leopard." Ever thought of going into advertising? - Charlesbian, on 11/11/2009, -0/+42he left a key with a neighbor, who in turn let construction workers LIVE IN THE HOUSE
- badqat, on 11/10/2009, -0/+41Dude, where's your house?
- Bbanda, on 11/10/2009, -0/+29New Zealand is where he was returning from the house that was demolished was in Ireland on the islands waterfront. Waterfront home in Ireland for 70 grand still seems like a ripoff, it must be gorgeous.
- dinuguan, on 11/11/2009, -0/+26Yeah, but it's a really sweet septic tank.
- replaysMike, on 11/11/2009, -0/+25"a car park surrounded by boulders to prevent inebriated drivers from driving into the harbor."
That sums up the whole island right there. - schenks, on 11/11/2009, -0/+24"after a judge ruled that his Irish island home was transformed into a parking lot while he was overseas for six years"
Do we really need a judge to determine whether a guy's house has turned into a parking lot or not? Seems like it would be pretty obvious to me. - Iamien, on 11/11/2009, -2/+25They accidentally my house.
- dhughes, on 11/11/2009, -0/+20 Not just gone but pretty obvious the developer set fire to it and as stated the workers lived in it while the hotel was being built. If it was me I'd ask for the police to investigate and sue for damages in the millions.
- D14852001neko, on 11/11/2009, -0/+19What a *****-town! Horrible neighbors =\
- scarlettletter, on 11/10/2009, -2/+19which is why like on digg you leave a note saying you'll be back in .... otherwise you not only lose all your mutuals... you lose your house!
- elmuerte17, on 11/11/2009, -0/+17FTA: Even if he does receive his court-ordered euro46,000, that's less than a fifth of the average house price in Ireland.
I'd be pretty upset about that too. Wouldn't he still have the deed to the property and therefore own whatever they build on it though? - shawnfromnh, on 11/11/2009, -1/+18I don't know about Ireland but in the US you need building permits, zoning changes, and the deed for the land if you build anything including a parking lot. I'd be suing the town and the employees personally who approved this parking lot since they apparently skipping all fact finding. Also since the construction employees stayed in the house the company was AWARE there was a house and owner there so they just didn't accidentally go over their property line so this sounds like grand theft or whatever the equivalent in Ireland and that should be an offense that includes fines and incarceration for the owner of the construction company or manager in charge of this project. This doesn't include the obvious arson and cover up of that crime that ensued.
There is so much wrong with this ruling it isn't funny. - Skalizar, on 11/11/2009, -0/+14It seems to me there is a simple solution here. The guy that built the hotel is obviously to blame here, they should just transfer the deed for the hotel property to the guy whose property was stolen. Justice served.
- crashkg, on 11/11/2009, -0/+14I hope he brought his towel.
- rolf, on 11/11/2009, -0/+14Also the neighbor seems to be in on it:
"He soon learned that a neighbor with whom he had entrusted a key had permitted Doohan's construction workers to live in his home while the neighboring hotel was being built."
Idk about you, but I'm pretty sure if I loan someone my house or car key for safekeeping, it's not for them to treat it like a rental home/car they can loan out to anybody. Maybe the neighbor's house should get a "mysterious fire" one day.... only as karma though. - sinisterouge, on 11/11/2009, -1/+14NO, HE MEANS COUP!! THE CHICKENS ARE TAKING OVER!!! I KNEW THIS DAY WOULD COME BUT YOU ALL LAUGHED!!!! NOW WHO'S THE CRAZY ONE‽‽‽‽‽
- Krelas, on 11/11/2009, -1/+14they paved your house, put up a parking lot, ooooooh bah bah bah bah
- panlane, on 11/11/2009, -0/+12This is the sort of thing that gets you building a killdozer.
- Kanten, on 11/11/2009, -0/+10^^^^
How many six-bedroom houses do you see for $70k? - dynamitshikoku1, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9set fire to my home? only 70k for leveling my house? This is so ***** up, i would snap and say "***** it all" at that point and begin destroying everything i see. Someone has to PAY, that's so ridiculous.
whats even more ***** up is the neighbor, WTF DUDE!? - Ahnteis, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9According to the article, he gave the keys to his neighbor. Obviously he thought it would be watched.
- supguy, on 11/11/2009, -1/+10EarElephant, did you even read the article?
- xyllar, on 11/11/2009, -0/+9The plans were on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign outside the door saying "Beware of the Leopard."
- Frostek, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8I would burn down that guy's hotel.
- smemily, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8I am surprised, I find that they generally require maintenance during such a time period.
- Spoomeister, on 11/11/2009, -0/+8Came here for the HHGTG references. Wasn't disappointed.
- BeastOfGevaudan, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7So it took 15 years for the courts to make a decision?
- Larsonal777, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7OK the ONLY reason i could possibly think that they only gave him 70 is that the land didn't go anywhere. Which is what makes a waterfront property so expensive. I would have to see what his house looked like before and know how much it'd cost to build it today to tell if it was fair.
If you build a 70 grand house on a 250 grand lot it becomes a 400 grand property... very loose mathmatics there but its just how reality works. - Mercedes383, on 11/11/2009, -1/+7More people do that than you may think.
- Paranor01, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Don't Panic!
- crossmr, on 11/11/2009, -1/+7I hope they decide the space your brain resides in is needed for the town..
- Larsonal777, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6average house price or average price for a plot of land with a house on it? BIG difference.
- SoCalDissident, on 11/11/2009, -1/+6You must have some fickle friends!
- Iamien, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5it would had been even more odd if they would had moved it somewhere else.
- LihkinG, on 11/11/2009, -5/+10YOU RAFF YOU RUSE
- CannedMango, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5It's true, ***** liberals. Republicans will only take your life and piss on your grave.

- agentsrecord, on 11/11/2009, -1/+5Don't be so heartbroken. That $70k Chicken Coup is going to be epic.
- Capta1nA, on 11/11/2009, -1/+5They couldn't have contacted his neighbors or family to find out where he was?
- jorel009, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4...whoa....damn.....thats ***** up!

- fatherdoom, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3YOU CANT CUT BACK ON FUNDING! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!!!!!
- Etobian, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3I'd dig down right near the property line, and sever and cap the pipe going to the septic tank.
- frsrblch, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3And look at the view from that parking lot!
- freewave04, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4He must have been filming the sequel.
- norwegianlegion, on 11/11/2009, -1/+4I wouldn't sweat it, they're just going to demolish the whole bloody planet in half an hour anyway.
