- OneHine, on 10/11/2007, -19/+119Once again we see that the War on Terror is simply an excuse for authorities to take stupid and/or illegal actions and justify it by appealing to irrational fear.
- Aeaus, on 10/11/2007, -10/+109I'd love to write out something like that about giving you a + or a -, but I'm only fractionally decided on the matter.
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -4/+82This has happened to me. In the bakery of my local (Publix) supermarket, I was taking pictures of the cakes for illustration references. The lady in the bakery got scared of me and was making all sorts of "code blue" type announcements over the intercom. I didn't realize I was the code blue until I was asked to leave by the manager and two very large (Wackenhut) security guards. I listened to the little guy on my shoulder. I left and went to a little Cuban bakery next door where they were more than happy to show me the entire kitchen and various pastries. They thought I was "the newspaper man."
- stanleyford, on 10/11/2007, -12/+87Did you even read the story? I'll summarize it for you:
1. Crew members on a boat act like *****.
2. Reporter acts like an *****.
3. Reporter calls crew members fascists for acting like *****. - nottidredd, on 10/11/2007, -45/+109the title is misleading. It never says anything about the man being accused of terrorism for taking pictures of french fries. All they did was ask for his ID because he was being a foul mouthed jerk. Buried as inaccurate.

Put down the Ritalin bottle and step slowly away... - Slovenian6474, on 10/11/2007, -10/+70Wait, this son of a bitch took a PICTURE of the fries!? Why the hell didn't they lock him up right there! He could be using those pictures to kill millions of Americans right now!
- mikelieman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+56This is an example of the United States not being BRAVE ENOUGH to deserve the Freedom it talks about.
The price of Liberty is the risk of other people having Liberty. - mrgreen4242, on 10/11/2007, -8/+58OK, that was a stupid article. It was a confrontation between a bored/over-zealous reporter and a couple of security guards on a boat. No police, no FBI... just some glorified mall security guards and a guy who wanted to make a big deal over nothing.
Now, don't misinterpret this. The fact that there was any question about whether this guy should be taking photos of a concession stand is pretty stupid, but so is the fact that he _got up and started the incident_ when he heard people discussing it. Both parties were wrong. The security staff on the boat was obligated to respond to the moronic concession stand monkey's report, and most likely would have just discussed it, watched the guy for a couple minutes, decided he wasn't a threat and gone back to eating donuts.
Again, this is a case of every one involved in the incident being a dumbass. It's to bad that the retail jerk was a paranoid freak, and it's a bummer that the security people are power hungry morons that overreact to every provocation, and it's a shame that this reporter feels like he has to be on the defensive every time there's a question about his actions. But, none of this has anything to do with french fries, cameras, boats, or terrorism. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+51Ok, time for everyone in the area to go take a ride on the ferry and take pictures of the fries.

- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37If an incident like this is reported to the authorities, then does his name go on a suspected terrorist list? And if so, doesn't that label him an enemy combatant, stripping him of his habeas corpus rights?
Its all too easy to slide down the slippery slope. - StillGaming, on 10/11/2007, -5/+33On another note, this just makes me further worried that I'll be arrested when I visit the Memphis Zoo to see the pandas.
I'll be wearing a Homestar Runner shirt that says, "Pistols for Pandas" on the front, and on the back, "They need all the firepower they can get!"
If you can get surrounded for taking pictures of french fries, I'll most definitely be thrown in Gitmo faster than you can say, "NASCAR" - mardigrasnut, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33Do people really want to get on the local news that damn bad? What a hero, i am glad there are people protecting me from guys that take pics of french fries, makes me feel all warm inside.

- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -19/+43Buried as inaccurate.
First, the guy acted like a douchebag. I wouldn't have appreciated being asked to see my photos or ID either. I would have refused and they may have called the cops. When the cops hear the story I would have the crew arrested for intimidation and harassment. End of story.
Moral of the story...don't be a dick. - kevincannon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24Does the captain of a ship have a database of known terrorists. How exactly is showing some ID going to help him ascertain if the guy's a security threat or not.
Yes, the guy acted like a dick, but I think he was entitled to given he get questioned for taking a photo of some chips. I mean come on, taking a photo on a ferry, it's fairly normal. - brettville, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22They were probably afraid you'd reverse engineer their fries and use them to slowly clog the arteries of our troops. That would be so like those sneaky bastard terrorists at McDonald's.
- Bobhuh, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22We protect our fries over there so that we don't have to protect them over here
- Erowid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19@thcobbs: "...where do you have a right to not identify yourself on a private ship?"
On a private ship. - Pozer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I think these are some kind of Top Secret fries in the development stage (that's why they suck ass) next time they should set a sign "taking pictures prohibited, top secret fries"

"French-fried potatoes were likely invented in Belgium, during the 18th century, and the name "French" was applied to them in English in the 19th century." -- Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fries - VIrus9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Maybe this fellow should have told them to go ahead and call the cops. I'm sure they would've just loved taking time out of their day to deal with a false report.
Wait a minute. Isn't filing a false report illegal? - neuros, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Sorry for the comment abuse, but I take this ferry a LOT and they're paranoid as *****. I was photographing the sunset near the docks when I got YELLED AT and threatened to be arrested if I didn't put my camera away and delete all my photo's.
It's not like people traveling from Connecticut to Long Island are so ***** important... - TubaTechno, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16"the title is misleading. It never says anything about the man being accused of terrorism for taking pictures of french fries. All they did was ask for his ID because he was being a foul mouthed jerk. Buried as inaccurate."
It's evident that the submitter relies on the fact that most people will not read the ***** article. Therefore, will give out knee jerk reactions to something that is already inaccurate. Welcome to Digg.com!!! - Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10If it happened in my bath tub, I'd have turned the entire boat upside down.
- insovietrussia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I'm not sure how relevant it is, but I was kicked out of a Coles supermarket here in Australia by security guards recently for using my phone to send a message. They thought I was taking photos with the phone and I was deemed a security risk.
I'm not exactly a seedy looking person by any means, I'm just a normal white guy and I was wearing a suit and tie at the time (it was my lunch break).
At the time I didn't make a fuss about it, I just complied and left. Later I wrote a letter to corporate affairs and apparently someone got fired, not that I wanted that to happen.
Anyway my point is, this isn't necessarily a situation unique to America. - Snarfy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I can't help but read that and know that we are all doomed. I always doubt there are people that dumb, but they are all over the place in the media. Are we on average really so stupid? How is taking a picture an act of terrorism? Terrorism is a methodology not an ideology.

- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I take the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry every Saturday and I can vouch for this guy... the whole operation is run by a bunch of dimwits.
Sure enough though, tomorrow, myself and 2 of my buddies will be taking pictures of the Freedom Fries. I might even wear a towel on my head for the full effect. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8shouldn't read stories about fries at lunch time, now i want some :(
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@johnhummel
I think the joke window closed on you. - JD52, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8The fries were then detonated by the Boston PD.
- blacksquirrel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Apparently most of you completely missed the point of the whole article.
Was the guy a dick? Yes. Was it a big deal? No.
This is NOT about one dude taking pictures of french fries on a private ferry and getting hasseled about it. This story means nothing until it is put into the context of our daily lives after 9/11. The story is about the thousands of such incidents that happen every day that are not reported on. The story is about our move to a surveillance society where we are constantly watched and asked who we are and what we are doing. Individually each incident is no big deal, but added together over time these inconveniences into our lives get steadily more intrusive and more frequent. Pretty soon we wake up one day and our freedom is gone. - PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I got questioned by the TSA for taking a picture of a newspaper vending machine in Houston... I found it interesting because it took credit cards. Seriously, people are way too scared of terrorism.
- kevincannon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Don't bother, it's already been lost.
- ronaldinho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The whole episode was just moronic, and the author could show more class by being the nice guy instead of dropping f-bombs, making him at least half as dumb as all the other people in the incident
- r2pro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I can not believe how many people are finding fault with the author. I go out and about in public places about 2-3 days a week taking pictures with a dSLR and I get stopped and harassed by overzealous employees/rent a cops at least twice a month. It's always for the same reason, "In this post 9/11 world ..." blah blah blah. I had to get business cards made up with the title of staff photographer just to make my life easier when dealing with them.
As someone who experiences this quite often I can assure you that it is indeed infuriating and all the more so if they come off as aggressive. For the rent a cops that approach you in a civilized way its no big deal and usually arrangements can be made to photograph their "sensitive" buildings or what not.
It also gets easier to deal with as it happens to you more often but you still get instantly irritated for being challenged for not only performing a legal activity but also one that will more than likely benefit the business/organization/etc from the free marketing.
I wish I could call these paranoid people freaks, but unfortunately they seem to be in the majority these days. What a world we live in. Benjamin Franklin would shed a tear for the state of this country. - toonworld, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@slovenian6474
Pfft! It's not the fries that kill Americans, it's the crappy oil they use that kills them. Get your facts straight! sheesh!
/sarcasme - Emesis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@Virus9:
If an event happened, the report wouldn't be false, even if no crime had been committed. It would only be a false report if you lied. - Rooster99, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I think he's allowed to tell the staff to STFU about him. I would have gone to the manager and complained about the conduct of his employee's. But Im with you in that he should not have gone up and started a confrontation. Its different if your actually there I guess. I know the right thing would be to take it up with the manager, but he probably experienced a brain-snap, and understandably so. I know my blood would boil if I was being accused of something cause I took a photo.
- supernovasky, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9So, we already learned our lesson with "The Crucible," Right?
"I saw Tom Gogola with the devil!" - BrokenVisage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Perfectly put, people need to see the big picture here. So much for the terrorists not changing our way of life.
- mennis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5In a related story, in France, American cheese is now referred to as 'idiot cheese.'" —Tina Fey
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -10/+15Yeah, basically the report brought this on himself. Neither one person was right... but when you start cursing out a crew member of a ferry and refusing the ferry captin's orders, you know you're in deep *****.
When you're on the water, the ship captain is God. No ifs, ands, or buts, about it. Sure there are limits, but if the captain wants to see your ID.... YOU SHOW HIM THE ***** ID. You're on his ship and he is responsible for your life... - gnomeh, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9I concur. Sure, the staff were acting like idiots but they probably had their manager yelling at them to make sure they stop global terrorism on $5.50/hour. The reporter only made things worse by acting like Mr. Cool.
I would say in the end tho, both sides acted like douchebags. - ewetubing, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Just one question:
I keep seeing comments of this sort above: "He is the captain of the ship. He is responsible for the lives of every person on that ship."
How is the act of him showing his ID to the captain going to make the trip safer for him and his co-passengers?
or...put another way:
How does the captain make a safer crossing knowing the ID of all of the passengers on board? -
