- ChoosyMother, on 05/26/2009, -7/+461Old folks like to help out. They come from a generation that instead of just stepping over a piece of garbage on the sidewalk, would actually stop and pick it up.
- Lucas123, on 05/26/2009, -4/+366"An undercover police officer spotted 81-year-old James Stacy in the street near Stacy's home with a pickax and a broom last week."
Good thing the cop was undercover. You never know when a gang of these 81-year-old pothole repairers may crop up and cause some real social havoc. Stealth by our law-enforcement officers was obviously needed in this case. - brbeaird, on 05/27/2009, -7/+150Something doesn't add up here.
"Police charged Stacy with criminal damaging, saying he destroyed fresh asphalt and ignored an officer's warning."
"Stacy said he cleared the 3-foot-wide hole because he expected a crew to patch it and wanted the patch to last longer."
Being fresh asphalt, it sounds like he decided the workers didn't do an adequate job, so he hacked it up himself in an attempt to make them redo it. Sounds kinda like a grumpy old man to me. I'm also curious as to what kind of "warning" was issued. - esc27, on 05/26/2009, -8/+128I'd like to think he was only trying to help, but I have to wonder if he wasn't just trying to make the hole worse in order to force a repair.
- tgc1, on 05/27/2009, -8/+94Today you'd be arrested for that, or accused of dropping it in the first place. ***** up world we live in.
- SifuMoKung, on 05/27/2009, -0/+77Yeah, that slutty pothole wanted it.
- shutaro, on 05/26/2009, -0/+76Clearly you've never been attacked by a mob of angry 81-year-olds wielding pickaxes...
- Raian, on 05/27/2009, -2/+61you are under arrest for that helpful comment...
- jcaino, on 05/27/2009, -0/+57Hell, just give him a job.
- Elderon, on 05/27/2009, -1/+51I feel for the old guy. Where I live we have this pot hole right in the middle of the street at the entrance to the our subdivision. It's getting worse and there's nothing we can do about it. We're not allowed to repair it since it's the cities job even though it's inside the subdivision and not on the main road.
The worst part of it is the ***** patches they use to "repair" it only last for .5 - 1 year max then it's just as big if not bigger. Not to mention it looks horrible. Instead of a nice street we end up with a street that looks like it has black tar spider webs all over it.
Props to the old guy - EmerilLIVE, on 05/27/2009, -1/+43As long as it was consensual, who cares?
- oboshoe, on 05/27/2009, -3/+44So...
How exactly does one go about getting a job as an undercover pothole detective?
They must be doing a bangup job keeping us safe. This is the first pothole crime I've heard about in months. - nepidae, on 05/27/2009, -0/+40He would make the "workers" look bad by actually doing some physical labor.
- gu0d, on 05/27/2009, -2/+39***** YEAH!
- SifuMoKung, on 05/27/2009, -3/+37Mr. Stacy denied that allegation. Was this warning from the "undercover officer"? Did the man identify himself as a police officer? I hope you aren't on his jury, since you seem to have made up your mind with a paragraph of evidence.
- Suzilla, on 05/27/2009, -0/+34It was her asphault.
- diemunkiesdie, on 05/27/2009, -0/+33When they get their scooters up to top speed there is no escape.
- nepalikakro, on 05/27/2009, -1/+28She was axing for it.
- serif69, on 05/27/2009, -3/+29I hope they tased that lowlife.
/s - inactive, on 05/27/2009, -0/+24there's 80 of them?
ew. - Portside, on 05/27/2009, -4/+25Why negative diggs on this comment? I know everyone on digg loves to hate authority and the government for whatever reason they can, but seriously.
- lutafin, on 05/27/2009, -4/+24I expected no less from someone called "Diggsuxass", if this place is so ***** then why the ***** are you still here, go kill yourself already.
- bagism347, on 05/27/2009, -1/+19Sounds like that episode of the Drew Carey show...must be an Ohio thing.
- DonAlfred, on 05/27/2009, -5/+23America...
- Radan, on 05/27/2009, -0/+17Pick up that can!
- InetRoadkill, on 05/27/2009, -2/+18There are undercover cops policing pot holes now? Seems like a total waste of resources.
- diggydougie, on 05/27/2009, -0/+15The warning was probably along the lines of "put down the ax or you will be arrested"
- andybex, on 05/27/2009, -5/+19Ohio sucks.
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -0/+14A friend of mine is doing hot patch repairs and these repairs have lasted almost 10 years (I'm not in that town anymore).....
*dig the hole out like so /__\ (square or round...round works better)
*heat the inside of the hole with a torch so the existing asphalt starts to soften and if you have time, until it start to melt....
*Line with liquid tar
*fill with hot asphalt, much like the stuff they use to pave the roadways
*Steam roll
*Seal the seam between the new and old asphalt with liquid tar while everything is still hot.
The new asphalt welds with the old asphalt instead of just sitting on top with no bond to the road surface....and there is no place for water to get into which causes heaving in the winter or erosion in the spring, summer and fall. - Rain12913, on 05/27/2009, -1/+15His point is that if that is indeed the case than this man should be charged with a crime. Don't get me wrong, as someone who lives in Massachusetts (constant thawing = bad potholes) I hate potholes just as much as the next guy, but going into the street and digging holes in order to force a repair is wrong and can be dangerous. If this is the case, than he should be charged. What if someone's car went over this now bigger hole and got a flat? If he was indeed trying to help, than he shouldn't be.
- spriggig, on 05/27/2009, -0/+14I've spent more than one commute pondering the failed methods the road crew must be using to fill potholes--you know, the ones that have been filled and refilled more times than we can count--and trying to imagine better techniques. I noticed how they have no problem with patching planned trenches that have been cut with a saw. Wouldn't it be a good idea to take a little extra time and cut a square around the pothole to create a clean edge for the patch?
- moxley, on 05/27/2009, -0/+13That's why he should've grabbed his cane and gone all '187 on a undacova cop..yeah, and ya don't stop..beat him with yo cane till da ***** drop'
- vital101, on 05/27/2009, -1/+13There's already a huge pothole in the road. Safety was compromised with the city/state/county didn't do anything about it.
- josephbloseph, on 05/27/2009, -0/+12Holes in the road aren't that complicated. The public works manager even said that it's the sort of thing that should be done before patching, but only rather immediately before. If they're anything like around here, or any other place I've driven, the crew was just going to slap in a quick patch that was going to fail next heavy rain, rather than do this proper job. My guess is (from observation of potholes) is that that hole has been a problem in the past, with shoddy patch work. I'd say the "old dude" knows what he's doing, and if you think that qualified engineers are sent out to patch roads, you're dreaming.
- DohCanadian, on 05/27/2009, -3/+15Or a mob of 81-year olds driving.. [/southpark]

- liquidtaco, on 05/27/2009, -0/+11damn if only my steamroller hadn't been repossessed last year...
- say592, on 05/27/2009, -0/+10I personally think the officer should have waited for backup.
- andrewh7, on 05/27/2009, -0/+10Sir, that's a question of national security and you don't need to know. The terrorists hate us for our comprehensive road surveillance and maintenance abilities. Revealing the nature and extent of our potholes will only embolden the terrorists. God bless America.
- micktoolz, on 05/27/2009, -4/+14taser
- TheBadWolf, on 05/27/2009, -3/+13You're right. I'm going to go tear up my street with a pickaxe, I expect you to organize the parade in my honor.
- jitterbits, on 05/27/2009, -2/+10Or maybe the cops are wrong and trying to cover their tracks now after doing something lame. It wouldn't be the first time.
- andrewh7, on 05/27/2009, -0/+8That asphalt is a whore and dressed provocatively. How was I supposed to know it wasn't 18 yet?
- vofuse, on 05/27/2009, -6/+14His first mistake was thinking any of our governments still have enough money left for repairing potholes.
- aabril, on 05/27/2009, -2/+10then the old man said "dont taze me bro!!!"
- oboshoe, on 05/27/2009, -0/+8Thats true.
Otherwise the undercover potholes cops would have their cover blown, putting us all in danger. -
