- clownfart, on 07/15/2009, -2/+30http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullet
A bullet is a hard projectile propelled by a firearm, sling, or air gun and is normally made from metal. A bullet does not contain explosives, but damages the intended target by tissue or mechanical disruption through impact or penetration. The word "bullet" is sometimes erroneously used to refer to a cartridge, which is the combination of bullet, casing (case or shell), gunpowder and primer. See ammunition. The Oxford English Dictionary definition of a bullet is "a projectile of lead ... for firing from a rifle, revolver etc." - partrow, on 07/15/2009, -0/+26I believe they mean "making cartridges", not making bullets.
Bullets are the inert projectiles which are propelled from the gun, and do not include the shell casing, the primer, or the powder (propellant). - FlaNative, on 07/15/2009, -0/+24The current ammo shortage is like the gas "shortage", invented for profit.

/Sitting on my many ammo cases.... - Ragarnok, on 07/14/2009, -1/+25I was expecting a fully automated robotized chain making 12 000 Millions rounds per minute, oh well I'll settle with that
- OrangeTide, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16I've made both. Bullet molds are pretty easy to use, although generally people use them for black powder firearms that don't have a cartridge.
Shooting is such a fun hobby. I don't see why people get all political and bend out of shape over it. In my town people rarely get shot, but murders with stabbings are common. You'd think in a nation where guns are easy to obtain legally or illegally that nobody would bother with knives.
my town - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8NxM11OXX4 - doctechnical, on 07/15/2009, -0/+16You were SUPPOSED to horde ammo back in '99. Evidently you didn't get the memo.
/s - proliance, on 07/14/2009, -2/+15I reload my .357 and .40. Since the brass is the most expensive part of the round you can save big $ and tailor your rounds to fit your shooting style.
- grovest4life, on 07/15/2009, -3/+16I want to go target shooting but every paranoid ***** has been buying up and hoarding all the bullets in my town, cant even get 22lr all that's left is shotgun shell's. I happen to be a liberal in strong support of the second amendment and I am not afraid of any gun grabbing since there is little political will to do it.
- Spire3660, on 07/15/2009, -1/+14I have 2 guns. One to hunt with and one to protect my home with. I dont consider that a hard-on for guns.
- grovest4life, on 07/15/2009, -0/+114-5 week back-order. Some times i think the ammo company's are intentionally not meeting demand and are taking advantage of the current political environment to jack up ammo prices and scam the customer like the oil companies did last summer.
- lionel1024, on 07/15/2009, -1/+11...wow
- dn90, on 07/15/2009, -0/+10you beat me to it...that intro is amazing
- Presbyterian, on 07/15/2009, -2/+11That doesn't even make sense.
- Rugrash, on 07/15/2009, -2/+11Also realize that we've been at war for years now and the US military gets first dibs and then LEOs. The civilian market gets whatever is leftover. It's getting better though since the run on guns and ammo both pre and post election is essentially over at this point. We're seeing better delivery times and now that demand has dropped as companies are shipping more often now. We're still seeing shortages on reloading supplies, especially primers. I've been shooting more and more .22LR these days since AR conversion kits and uppers cost more or less what a case of 5.56mm costs.
www.talonarms.com - repins, on 07/15/2009, -0/+8@Professr, you can get a single stage reloader fro less that 100 bucks
- OrangeTide, on 07/15/2009, -0/+7seems fine to me. as long as you respect it and understand the basic physics involved. avoid pointing at something you don't want perforated and avoid ricochets because they result in an unpredictable trajectory.
- doctechnical, on 07/15/2009, -0/+7That was the very first thing I thought of as well. And an excellent film, I recommend it.
- grantmoore3d, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6So, they just showed them loading a bullet into the shell... I was expecting a little more, like how metal is shaped into a shell and other parts of the process.
- OrangeTide, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6I bought a few 1000rd cases last year in California for a little less than that for a 50rd box. But now I go to check the prices where I bought them and places are mostly sold out of everything. Crazy!
- gfreeman223, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6@Tarnum: You are freaking god damn high, and have clearly never. ever. handled or fired an AK variant outside of Counter-Strike and Airsoft. You must have just glanced at the Wiki and tried to pass yourself off as an expert, i'm here to point you out as a idiot.
Com-bloc AK cartridges (except for Yugoslavia) ALL use steel cased ammunition. Some of the cases are polymer coated, but there is no such thing as plastic AK cartridges. There were a few failed attempts at plastic 5.56/.223 cartridges, and the upcoming US Army/ATK LSAT project has telescoped, polymer cased rounds, but that sci-fi crap is still in development. - SammySom, on 07/14/2009, -9/+14You don't need no gun control
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFcVwDw4YLE - Ruger11mcrdpi, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6Just bought three boxes of .45 ACP yesterday for $15.99! each (FMJ, reloadable brass casings) No problem in Texas!
- borez, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Just came here to post the very same thing. Beaten to it.
- OrangeTide, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7I find people have a hard-on for insulting groups of people they never even met. As long as your arrogance makes you happy, who am I to stop you.
- Ishiguro, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7If you are talking 5.7x28 then you can afford the equipment. That stuff is expensive.
Usually you don't want .40 reloads for a GLOCK, but haven't heard of it being a problem in other guns. - Drakenking, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5Ooooh... Shiny.
- havok3114, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I reload .40 for a Glock, the problem is the Factory barrel doesn't have enough support for the casing. I have an aftermarket barrel for it and it works great.
- n1eb, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5If this isn't enough to prove forever that Time has no business writing about anything firearm related then I don't know what is. Every time they write "bullet" in place of "cartridge" it makes me cringe. Then when they have an actual photo of bullets, they call them "slugs" :\
Finally, they show a 9mm round and call it a 40 caliber. I mean, did they even talk to the people in the facility or did they just run around taking neat pictures in the "bullet factory". Ughh. - kenhatesemos, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4that's exactly what i thought of when i saw this article.
- shadowspawn, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5I've been following bullet making since my dad showed me how to reload rounds as a kid. It's pretty safe if you follow precautions, and yes, bullets cost $$$ for certain guns. Cheap guns that take cheap bullets exist (like Chris Rock said) but certain guns take really expensive ones. And using a 5.56 in a .223 can ruin your day, even tho they look identical and basically are as far as casing, and even are shipped in the same box with only an appending "a". Different powders, different tolerances, etc. but the same cartridge casing and primer for all intents and purposes.
There's some really advanced tech, thick and sticky politics, and lots of money to be had in the field. Orders and contracts for bullets are counted in the millions, keep in mind.
Hell, check out this: http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=P ...
It's an LED tracer, only visible to the back of the bullet. Friggin expensive, but since most tracers go "both ways", this is a neat solution for those using IR or starlight finders. - havok3114, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Good luck, finding the components to reload now is almost as hard as finding fully loaded ammo.
- Spire3660, on 07/15/2009, -4/+8So you are saying that people shouldn't be allowed to hunt to feed their family in the winter? Or practice at the range so you are comfortable using your weapon to repel a home invader?
- OrangeTide, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5pretty sure those are the same people buying up all the ammo.
- wozz, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3If you read the update at the top of the post, it says the DOD rescinded this order after the crap storm that ensued from the firearms community. Pretty scary they did it in the first place, though. We paid for them; we ought to at least be given the opportunity to buy them back.
- repins, on 07/15/2009, -3/+6really? I thought that FoxNews viewers where all conspiracy whack jobs, clinging to their guns and religion...
- Professr, on 07/15/2009, -2/+5I can't afford the equipment to reload my own :( Hopefully my .45, .223, and 5.7 won't go bad anytime soon.
Also, are you sure reloading .40 is a good idea? Those are particularly finicky rounds, with a tendency to explode if the brass is even a little thinner in any one area, or if the slugs are set back even a tiny bit too far. - nuketrap, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Here is a VIDEO of bullets being made, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkr1NS7bEUU obviously it's not as good as seeing the real thing, but it's pretty interesting seeing how the one thing money is spent on the most every year is made.
- nyxerebos, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3it's a good film
- Ishiguro, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2@grovest4life, I've read articles that told about the last time demand went way up, the ammo companies built new factories then demand went down, and they had factories they didn't need, so they are running full production, but not expanding this time.
- graahBrains, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Some people think they can outsmart me, maybe…*sniff* maybe. I've yet to meet one that can outsmart bullet.
- ObeseSnake, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Someone likes the "how is babby?" meme way too much.
- majordannyboy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Yeah, i was expecting a bunch of lead melting pots or presses and casts. Not just a bunch of ammunition loaders.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2don't we all...
- thcobbs, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Sweet Murder < Violence Crime!
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Don,t feed the troll.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3"US military gets first dibs and then LEOs."
Not true, most law enforcement agencies especially local ones are cutting back on range time etc due to rising cost of ammo and lack of availability. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2The first time to the range was nothing I hadn't done before but the grenade part was kinda scary. Not so much the grenade in my hand as the ones in others hands. I had a lot of respect for that guy who had to stand there next to you when you went to throw it incase you ***** up.
- flamingduck, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Great intro... I actually lived for a year in Liberia and I can tell you they screwed up a bunch of the facts in the move but the general idea is pretty much there... that stuff happens all the time in Africa.
