- Ytse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+100Yeah, I miss the days when it was "Music TV."
Now it's more like "eMpTyV."
(Terrible joke, I know, but it's true.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+85Funny how the pacing seems sooooooo slow now...
Still miss the hell out of watching it back when the M actually stood for "music." - lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+75"***** MTV, I hate rich white kids."
i thought mtv was all about ridin spinnaz, pimpin hos, cheating, money, and being a hypocritical mouth-flailing black woman. where do the white kids come in? - whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+64I watch the Discovery Channel and History Channel all the time.
Ask me anything about sharks or nazis... - cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57The only reason they play trash now is because all you morons watch it.
- sobriquet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47Seems a lot better going slow like that. More homegrown and less commercial.
- pastaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41zztop key-chain! woot!
- gusatron, on 10/12/2007, -15/+46@maretten
wow...what about rich black kids?
You know who I hate, broke ass lazy bitches who like to bitch about rich people instead of working to improve themselves. And before you go all "You SHUT UP you rich f---er", I'll have you know I am teetering on the poverty line as we speak. But I don't hate the rich white kids for it. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31The good days... It was so much better back then... :(
They had bands that... didn't suck. - steve693, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31The pacing is slow as all hell, but it's still pretty cool.
I think this format could actually work if it got a modern update. Anything's better than the crap they air now. . . - fourzerofour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I called dish network and they acted like I was crazy..
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Buy 3 zz top LPs and get a free zz top keychain!!! 1 800 get rock!
- JesusFaction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27dugg for the commercials!! LOL
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27God, I could watch this the whole day, really thanks for posting this. It feels so...right.
- pathetik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I want my "old school" MTV
- fourzerofour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24How many sharks would it take to kill a nazi?
- Torx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Someone needs to "hack the system" and play this hour long vid on MTV just to let these ***** kids these days see what real mtv was about.
- BarryChuckle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20MTV is in stereo now?!
Best call my cable operator to hook-up! - Shinyhappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18MTV - RIP
1981-1996 - Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17i really hope more old tapes like this surface. this was a year before i was born, but it's infinitely better than watching 90 minutes of modern MTV.
here's part two:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5141974708608716448&q=mtv+1983+part+2+of+2 - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Ok, the Discovery channel has Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs, those two shows are awesome. As for decorating houses, your either thinking of TLC or Home and Gardening channel or something.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Exactly. Back when the M in MTV stood for Music, it was pretty damn good. You could put on MTV on a Friday or Saturday night, and they pretty much played music vids that served as great party music. I remember the very early days, live concerts would play on MTV and be simulcast by a local FM station. Good concerts too...
- hernam19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16im a 90's kid but damn, mtv was so much cooler back then...
- gaagaale, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I wasn't even born, but it's great to go back in time!

Deja ***** vu. - LoveWidescreen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Well, I **was** a teenager back then. in fact, all of my teenage years were in the 80s. And I have to say -- I agree with you for a number of reasons. It seemed that the 80s was everyone's decade. No boomers, no hippies, no kids vs. authority, no criticisms of long hair, or crap like that. Everyone just seemed to enjoy what was going on. Hell, even my mom, who was in her mid to late 50s back then, would watch MTV with me and sing along to some of the music. She still holds the record in the family for Atari 2600 "Pac Man". :)
The 80s completely rocked. I miss them. - layzie83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I love the commercial with full albums for $6.99 each. Good luck finding a new release for $6.99 these days.
- Pirate45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Damn, I wish I was a teenager back then. The 80's were awesome!
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I am pissed off about TLC replacing junkyard wars and all their other good shows with 24/7 Trading Spaces.
I hate American Choppers and other such things on Discovery, but Discovery HD theater is ***** awesome though. And PBS kicks arse. And hte history channel is still awesome.
Edit: and did anyone catch Stalingrad The Lost Evidence on the history channel yesterday? - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"Remember when the Discovery Channel actually had decent shows on it other than Monster Bike Buildoffs and fags prancing around redecorating houses?"
Today's douchebag, brought to you by Homophobe Weekly, and National Idiot. Magazines for those self-righteous ***** who really couldn't care to do some actual research, and, y'know....learn once in a while. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Get over yourself.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1233 minutes in: ad for Mountain King on Atari 2600.
- Frozo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Too bad MTV is dead. No, I mean seriously. Enjoy it now, its going away.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Funny, pimp my ride and real world seem like high class shows compared to the ***** they got on now. I didnt think they could get suckier, but they did. Plus they ***** up mtv2.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Now the only music videos that are played are at like 5AM (same videos day after day) or on TRL where they play like 30 second clips of the same videos (day after day). Or on direct effect which is all rap/hip hop.. all there is is shows like exposed (the stupidest, fakest show ever) and parental control and next, which all suck and are so set-up and scripted.
- whamdanglers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12That's funny. Today we have to call the cable company for an HDTV receiver. Back then you had to call the cable company to get STEREO! God, I love the new millennium.
- blimpmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yes I remember it well. I was a DJ at WPLJ from '79-'83. I left when they decided to switch to Top 40. I worked with Mark Goodman for 2 years at PLJ, I even went with him on his audition for the VJ spot. I think we all know that The Buggles video "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first video played. Can anyone tell me what the SECOND video played was?
MTV had a catalog of about 43 videos when they first signed on, most of them Rod Stewart. The only good thing that ever came out of MTV was Live Aid. Bob Geldof can thank MTV for giving his videos heavy rotation when not many radio stations would. Madonna never would have had the success she had without MTV, nor would the Thompson Twins, Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Fixx, INXS, etc. MTV ushered in the New Wave generation and a whole mess of funky hairstyles.
Anyway, the answer is Rod Stewart, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy.
I sure miss the letter M. - bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Still miss the hell out of watching it back when the M actually stood for "music."
what's it mean now? Monotony? - OnAnyMouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10VHS...were there dinosaurs back then?
Just over week ago, I heard Nirvana on the oldies station. Smells like teen spirit. On the oldies station.
***** ouch. - tk121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Wow - what a blast from the past! Theres some great music on there.
It's a real shame that MTV will never be like this again. - tonto69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeh, MTV was far better then! I still remember watching those classic 80's videos.
- crowbarred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I gotta wait a whole week to recieve my michael jackson tape cassette? !! a week?? (i luff my mp3)
- CanceledCzech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Really? I liked the slow pacing.
- Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14you know what i hate? how g4tv took over techtv and ruined it and then made their own station even worse? remember when tech tv was actually about tech? then it turned to g4tv and it was actually about games? but now what is it? oh yay, it has cops...star trek...and some other lame shows. what the hell happened there? i want techtv again. or atleast g4tv...
- DuxDucis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ 7500
Please ***** off.
Really.
Piss off digg. Now. - SeismicShock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11NIGHT RANGER!!
- rrubiojr1975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This was about the time that my parents got cable for the first time. I remember my dad getting the cabling to do the stereo hookup to put sound through these huge ass speakers. The cable box was this super ugly brown thing with a fake wood finish with a large dial in the middle that went from channels 2 to I think 36. Damn, I was 7 years old in 1983.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It was about the music back then...it was good.
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11lol, I love 80's comercials
