- jggube, on 01/07/2009, -6/+328It's their fault for the misprint, I think this man is owed $135,000 dollars.
- smartcause, on 01/06/2009, -1/+313I'm gonna try that next time I lose a big poker hand, "I know you think you have a straight, but that 9 of diamonds is a misprinted 10 of clubs, so I win."
- identityxcrysis, on 01/07/2009, -3/+235How the hell do you misprint a ticket?!
The ticket says you win, then you win. The end. - acmaurer, on 01/06/2009, -1/+133So we're supposed to expect scratch-off lottery ticket recalls now???
- WordsnCollision, on 01/06/2009, -1/+124What if the small print is a misprint?
- nailPuppy, on 01/07/2009, -0/+105Sounds like someone from their printing or QA department should get fired and the lottery commission needs to eat their $135k mistake. Hopefully they won't make another in the future.
- dcoolidge, on 01/06/2009, -10/+102Next thing you know the US govt will start saying oh that $100 bill is really a misprint...
- FireandFlame, on 01/07/2009, -1/+91Due to no recall being made, and Them still selling the tickets, with expectations being that someone would win the jackpot, they are in Default, because they are selling under false pretenses if they did not want to honor their services. He will get the money. An Example would be the woman who won a Toy Yoda on a radio station after being led to believe she would win a Toyota. The Radio station was still required to give out a Toyota, and the DJ lost his job.
- STBAT25, on 01/06/2009, -4/+91I bet he doesn't see a dime of that money. Most contests have small print that covers misprints.
- oboshoe, on 01/07/2009, -0/+78Everybody who has a losing ticket should request verification from the lottery.
Just in case their losing ticket was actually a winning ticket.
Let the lottery have fun verifying millions of losing tickets. - ryan83189, on 01/06/2009, -1/+76I would send threats to get the money, and if confronted about it declare them void due to a misprint.
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 01/07/2009, -1/+66Can't lose if you don't play.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+64Poor Guy, I hope he at least got his money back for the tickets he bought!
- MLGLies, on 01/07/2009, -1/+62So what's to keep every single lottery in America from pulling this one?
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+52What happens when there is a misprint that says you lose when you actually win. I wonder how many times this has happend.
- talon146, on 01/07/2009, -0/+47"Excuse me, Sir? Unfortunately your tickets were part of a batch of misprints. You are not a winner, just leave those tickets on my desk and you will be shown the exit."
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+47Dug for the upside down apostrophe.
- jadenton, on 01/07/2009, -0/+45Time to audit the lottery commissions books.
- Myztry, on 01/07/2009, -0/+43They should pay none the less. It is just as likely that misprinting can cause no winning tickets to be issued. A condition they would happily and quietly go along with.
- bigdoof, on 01/07/2009, -3/+44The game that appears on the ticket is just a fun little representation of a predetermined result. The actual result is the serial number and the prize that it's associated with in the the lotto commission's database. That's why a lot of times, there's another scratch off section that they tell you not to remove. That's the serial number that they use for verification; they don't want you messing with that.
- bordlin, on 01/07/2009, -5/+43You're a misprint.
- Nitrouz, on 01/07/2009, -2/+39Dear OLG, if you were not able to recall the misprinted tickets before they were sold its your responsibility to make a payout.
- mauleriscool, on 01/07/2009, -1/+36What article? all I noticed was this on the side http://photos.upi.com/topic/1324711d7e7af60e0026ab ...
- UberNick, on 01/07/2009, -0/+33Nope, precedent dictates that liability is limited to the cost of the ticket.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+35Toy Yoda.....LOL.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 01/07/2009, -1/+31The lottery company should be responsible for their problems. If anything, they should be held accountable, and at least give him a refund, with all the other people who got misprints. I mean seriously, how many people do you think buy these things. The lottery company has more than enough money to spare!
- leecllw, on 01/07/2009, -1/+25What a crock! I always did wonder about those scratch off tickets, my guess is no one ever sees big prizes from them.
- jeffkee, on 01/07/2009, -1/+24At the rate at which the Fed is printing and injecting money, that just might happen.
- DirtyVicar, on 01/07/2009, -3/+25They might as well just claim that a gang of counterfeiters ran into the convenience store and loaded the machines with fake tickets at gunpoint. Pay up, lottery commission *****, it's your responsibility to make sure the tickets are valid.
- sliksta, on 01/07/2009, -1/+23Good question. These crooks should have to come out and inspect every losing ticket to make sure it's not really a winner.
- morcheeba, on 01/07/2009, -2/+22Because, if they did that, eventually people will realize the lottery is a ripoff and stop playing.
Oh, wait... - pintomp3, on 01/07/2009, -5/+24I'm a mispint.
- andrewlotta, on 01/07/2009, -2/+20Definitely. I thought there were laws against this happening.
It's not his fault there were misprints.
The part that confuses me is, if he is the only one with a misprinted card, either they don't sell many cards, or they are full of *****. How come no one else got a misprint? - doubleoh7, on 01/07/2009, -3/+19This article doesn't exactly include all of the facts. From the Petersborough Examiner (an Ontario Newspaper):
"And I made sure to ask the woman from the start -- in about seven different ways--if I would get paid regardless of the error because it was their mistake," Noftall said.
"She told me I absolutely would. She said they made the mistake and it would be false advertising if they didn't (pay)."
He KNEW it was a misprint when he scratched the ticket. I'm betting that all six numbers were $75,000 (instead of the usual 3 out of 6 required to win). There's no doubt he KNEW this was a printing error, and is trying to cash in on it. I'm not saying he's right or wrong, but this article makes it out to sound like this guy "lost" $135,000 and all his hopes and dreams are crushed, when really he's just trying to cash in on an error. I wish him luck, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. - bman85, on 01/07/2009, -0/+15B.S. I'd be contacting a lawyer if i was him.
- FireandFlame, on 01/07/2009, -0/+15My Apologies, you are correct, I got that confused with the 100 Grand lawsuit that happened against a DJ for giving out a candy bar, instead of the money.
- tmyprod, on 01/07/2009, -0/+14I wonder how much positive PR the Lotto company would have received if they publicly paid the guy the full amount? You can't buy that kind of PR through advertising/stunts/gimmicks.
- desfahanian, on 01/07/2009, -1/+14"we estimate you are angry" M.Hedberg
- Ahnteis, on 01/07/2009, -2/+15No, it cost him $10 or $20. Whether he deserves winnings or not is a separate matter.
On that note, he should demand a refund for a defective product. - bigdoof, on 01/07/2009, -3/+15Rhetorical? In what sense? There are numerous ways in which a misprinted item may say one thing, but isn't corroborated with the other identifying information on the item. It's not really a deep philosophical quandary.
- morcheeba, on 01/07/2009, -1/+13I'm not sure if you're a lawyer, but your Random use of Capitalization lends a certain Credence to your argument.
- oboshoe, on 01/07/2009, -3/+14Its the government.
If you make a mistake, you owe the government.
If the government makes a mistake, you owe the government.
Its probably legislated that they have no liability. - katieedwards, on 01/07/2009, -1/+12Actually that case was quite a bit different. It was not a radio contest and there was no DJ involved. It was an april fools day by an employer who offered a toy yoda to the waitress who sold the most beer. The waitress sued and it ended in a settlement. Check your facts....
In any case, the government (hopefully) did not intend to print misleading tickets. - vxp19, on 01/07/2009, -1/+11Yes.
When I typed "I ***** HATE YOU AND WISH YOU DIED A HORRIBLE MISERABLE DEATH WHICH I WILL DO MY BEST WILL HAPPEN SOON" I really meant to type "hi, how's it going?"
I mean, the keys are right next to each other.
Disclaimer: this note may contain misprints, for which I, my family, my affiliates, and anyone who I came into random contact with ARE NOT LIABLE. by reading this message you declare you will NOT SUE any of the above mentioned people. - richardstaboner, on 01/07/2009, -6/+15Who's a misprint?
- captaingary, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9I hope this is big news in Ontario and people stop buying lotto tickets. We'll see how long it takes them to reconsider.
- TreasureDen, on 01/07/2009, -1/+10How it's a misprint? If you win, you win. What a BS excuse.
- mentallyinhell, on 01/07/2009, -1/+10You know how it is, the people that win these things are all the type of person that blows money on lottery tickets.
- namelessXsilent, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8happened with the NY advance here, The weekly scratch offs they have every once in awhile had a misprint where 1000 or so people won $100,000. So to fix it those people who won went into a "drawing" to see who won. *****, because i was one of them
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+9I see what you there.
