- sixthplanet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Cool pics. I didn't know about the history of the Route 666 sign. That's interesting.
- mynameistim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7long exposures are awesome.
- gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The Flickr photoset has tons of other pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lostamerica/sets/72157600011611120/
- zella, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Photos are great. One minor detail, Hwy 666 wasn't changed due to pressure from christian groups, it was changed because the states through which it runs were paying a fortune to replace the signs. I called CDOT and UDOT to find that out.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Those photos kick ass. I'd hang 'em in my house.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yes, a gell in this context is a thin translucent color film that you affix to the end of a light to color it.
- nublet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4awesome photography skills.
- mynameisrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Brilliant photos. I've tried night photography and it isn't as easy as it looks.
- gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Daytime is overrated, nighttime is way better.
- UtahApocalyse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Reminds me of the movie "Cars"
- chunger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Very cool. Love the night photography. But, what do you mean by "red-gelled" or "green-gelled" flashlights? Is it a filter over the end?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I thought it was a great collection. Now if I wasn't in such a rush to go from here to there then maybe I could take a breath or 2 and enjoy the scenery.
- MarkDykeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It reminds me of the Cars animated film...
- videolab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Tony Paiva is an awesome photographer.

The state government should have changed it to 'Caesar Road' to get past the Christian's rants and it would still be hwy 666. ;)
- banjokelly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Beautiful. The pale light iluminates things which were previously invisible.
- hmac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It makes me feel strangely nostalgic.
Almost like I miss a time when these places were inhabited. - Samsong, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Slow.
http://duggmirror.com - metalgod79, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That Indian statue reminds me of the movie Creepshow.
- aroundtown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Great photos, now I have to look up Sodium Vapours!
- Lyght, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This site's been up for years. I'm sure that wasn't the first time it was posted on Digg.
- brucerchapman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yes but was it christian groups taking down the signs, or was it devil worshippers pinching them?? Or just drunken college kids??
Never mind, I'll check eBay. They'll be worth something now that they are no longer in 'production' - esbern1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3this is ***** awesome:
http://www.lostamerica.com/roadside/666.6.jpg - PAlacrosse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3ohhh so thats where alta vista went.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Looks like shots taken as concepts for game maps. Sweet photos.
- coffeebot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1he's inspired me to adapt my nighttime photos to filtered flash
- miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2He was saying "Hiya" not "Hiel"
- miriclaire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1These are wonderful photos and a testament to our artistic ability. The photos, themselves are strangely sad and certainly the monuments stand as a testament to the new age of waste and consumerism. Everything needs to be newer, slicker, better, bigger. Why in the world would that Orange stand be left to rot. for instance?
Thanks for your post. - Sifl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, but this was very recent.
- schnikies79, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Digg up! Why anyone would want to live in a world of cement and stop lights when they could see beautiful wilderness every day is beyond me. I lived in the city during college, that was enough for me.
- schnikies79, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Digg up! Why anyone would want to stay at cement and stop lights over beautiful wilderness, I have no idea.
- adikt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Might as well taken most of them during the day and saved some time. Overexposed. Missing the subtle shadows and contrasts of long exposure photography which would only have accentuated the "longing for time gone by" mood of the locations.
- wassim2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You should link it to the "fall of Rome" story. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/80fa0a2c-49ef-11dc-9ffe-0000779fd2ac.html
- keppj0nes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Did anyone else see that Native American statue doing a Nazi salute?
- wrestlingnrj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Haven't been on a road trip with mom and dad in a while, but I leave in the morning to drive from LA to Miami with my best friend, its our 8th time driving this trip.
- Lyght, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, some of the pictures are new on there. I was surprised to see some of these places in person while driving by on trips after seeing this site.
- nickdngr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i hope you're being sarcastic because there were only three shots on that page where I thought the unnatural lighting didn't convey a particular mood, but I still understood the use of them to bring out details.
- th33n3my, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Duplicate post. Photos are still worth a second look.
http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Lost_America_pics - compreal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1just amazing
- kreed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Awesome site.
- brucerchapman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I just finished a road trip past many of these same objects. My passengers were complaining about how boring driving through the desert is. I couldn't communicate the strange affinity I have for the area. These photos are a great way to communicate the beauty of the isolation, the abandoned dreams, the timeless effect of weathering.
- alecsputnik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1really cool photos!
- clafleche, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0these photos are a prime example of poorly-understood lighting techniques converging with cutesy digital enhancements.
boring pictures. - drewfer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I've done a fair amount of driving in the west(~4000 miles) and I've never seen something this amazing.
- wocketman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Amen!
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1What? nobody whining about a lack of a Picture section on Digg?
btw - too much artificial lighting was used in those pics..... - RensoreK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Very awesome lighting effects. That chair looks awfully clear...I need a camera like that
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Nightweat American Photos...try to figure out :-)
