- FTLJohnson, on 02/16/2008, -5/+2The serious irony of this... Is that it's COMPLETELY unecessary... With the advent of Virtual Vinyl, essentially you load an mp3 on your computer, and use a virtual deck that is controlled by a real deck... Your entire mp3 library can be mixed...

(and just so no one thinks I'm spamming for Stanton, NuMark makes a good DJ product that does the same thing... but Stanton's video explanation is much better produced)- tacom8, on 02/16/2008, -0/+3sure thats all well and good, but that music needs to come from somewhere to be recorded on your computer, presumable most vinyl is ripped and online these days, but i would guess these guys are more into crate diging then downloading anyway looking for forgotten tracks...
not that you couldn't find a metric ass ton of bizzaro tracks on usenet to use.. - wesk702, on 02/16/2008, -1/+0To mention Stanton and Numark without even a mention of Serato brings your comment to its doom. buried for "don't know *****"

- RadiantBeing, on 02/16/2008, -19/+2Why? I bet you the average computer geek has a bigger record collection on his or her computer. Random access trumps vinyl any day.
- davori, on 02/16/2008, -0/+14Yeah... Quantity over Quality wins as always...
Vinyl is the format that won't die due to its audio quality and tangible versatility.
So Stfu please.- FTLJohnson, on 02/16/2008, -6/+1Vinyl is dead. http://www.digg.com/gadgets/DJs_need_not_have_Mess ...
- davori, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Hi there, looks like you have been hit with the ignorance stick too! Unfortunate one may say, but I'll try to clear this up for you. Every DJ based program is based upon Decks, Vinyl Decks. Now using a mouse you can emulate any mixer, deck, track, sample etc. BUT, you lose the feel, the tangible reality. This can be somewhat helped by MIDI interfaces (BCD3000 by Behringer for example) which is ok, I have one myself and its good fun but is nowhere near as accurate as is needed to beat-match tracks. You can use CDJ Decks, which are great, they truly allow the versatility of Vinyl decks and have added cueing, looping and other great features. Thats all good, but its still not the real thing, it still feels somewhat artificial. The big companies have been implementing new ways of making these CD decks as Vinyl-like as possible, with rotating jog wheels etc etc.
The heart and soul of DJing was built around VInyl decks, manipulation of vinyl and the type of effects that can be achieved with them. Its quality, the sheer joy of playing a record, watching it spin, watching the needle creep towards the centre, hearing the needle's own music. Nothing beats playing a record, and nothing beats mixing with them.
Vinyl saw off 8-track, Cassette and is in the process of seeing off CDs too. The death of vinyl won't come in my lifetime my friend, and I'm 20.

- FTLJohnson, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1Way to not actually watch the link Davori... Timecoded vinyl is NOTHING like a CD Deck. If you are going to reply to a comment... READ the comment. In my case, that meant actually watching the video.

- aroundtown, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Most DJ's use CDJs or FinalScratch/Serato on the laptop. Note Richie Hawtin has 1 table, just for ripping record promos he gets. I have a pretty large record collection but play everything on CDJ these days.
- RadiantBeing, on 02/16/2008, -19/+2Why? I bet you the average computer geek has a bigger record collection on his or her computer. Random access trumps vinyl any day.

- GOVATENT, on 02/16/2008, -3/+3it like saying Mexicans are bad
- EpicSelekta, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2Anyone who has listened to "Gema Tanzen" by Mo-Do. Or anyone that had to sit through retarded DJs thinking that ATB makes club-worthy music. Not that ATB is bad, but it makes me want to sleep.
- mexicanmonkey, on 02/16/2008, -1/+11I DO!
- Thater, on 02/16/2008, -0/+16I don't know, who does say that?
- Remccs, on 02/16/2008, -2/+3it's a record for records!
- Four20, on 02/16/2008, -1/+26I love how so many people are clueless as to why vinyl records sales have increased so much.
Rave on!- ivosilva, on 02/16/2008, -2/+1Enlighten us?
- EpicSelekta, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2They actually have still decreased. DJs were buying vinyl in mass just as much in the 70s and 80s as they are now, except that the non-DJ market tapered off. Just look at sales of the Technics 1200 series.
- aroundtown, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Actually with digital downloads and digital turntables they have decreased. Toronto used to have close to a dozen stocked record stores (selling house/techno/jungle etc) downtown. I think they are down to maybe 2, and they are struggling.
- jlbarber, on 02/16/2008, -5/+3DJ T, Richie Hawtin and myself have the same chair. All I need is a few thousand more in equipment then DJ Digg is born.
- mexicanmonkey, on 02/16/2008, -4/+1DJ Digg...that's good...i'm stealing it
- Le3f, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2Might need more than equipment...
- wafflesomd, on 02/16/2008, -22/+4Vinyls are old and inadequate for today's DJ'ing scene.
- blackomegax, on 02/16/2008, -1/+16WTF are you on? Vinyl is the heart of today's DJ'ing scene.
- wafflesomd, on 02/16/2008, -4/+1Vinyls sound quality greatly decreases from a few plays.
- mookieXL, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2And it prevents DJs from playing same songs over and over.
- OMGsplosion, on 02/16/2008, -0/+5While it is true that vinyl is slowly dying, the sound quality definitely does not degrade from a few plays, you probably have your needle set up wrong.
- davori, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2Where as MP3s can never ever sound as good as a new vinyl.
Vinyl 1 : You 0
- wafflesomd, on 02/16/2008, -4/+1Vinyls sound quality greatly decreases from a few plays.
- Le3f, on 02/16/2008, -2/+1depends on the genre...
- FTLJohnson, on 02/16/2008, -2/+1I commented this above... but Vinyl is on it's way out in the DJing scene. Better technology has been out for a few years:
http://www.digg.com/gadgets/DJs_need_not_have_Mess ...
It's called Virtual Vinyl. Virtual decks loaded with digital audio are controlled by real vinyl turntables. Better quality audio, no risk of damaging the audio while scratching... insanely higher amounts of control... Vinyl is outmoded.- boombye, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1My friend has that program, or something similar.. He uses on vinyl with different samples for scratching and another random vinyl for the beat which is on the computer... He still needs turntables to get it done and still needs vinyls..
- davori, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Boombye, yeah that stuff is really useful for DJing when you don't want to carry around hundreds of records. Its called Timecoded-Vinyl, which is sending a time signal to the computer. So, if you stop the vinyl it stops the track on the computer playing, you spin back it does so virtually. Still doesn't beat vinyl unfortunately...
Oh and FTLJohnson please read back to the first time you posted that comment, I've a little education for you.

- stormsewer, on 02/16/2008, -0/+4Vinyl is definitely alive and kicking in the scene though. High end clubs and people who have been djing for years have been moving toward the digital area recently. Though if you look at smaller local scenes vinyl is what everyone still has and uses. I personally hate lugging around records, but there is nothing like spinning vinyl. It is a beauty all of its own.

- yannicwalter, on 02/16/2008, -0/+5It's not wrong what you said.
It's just not very common to translate "internet terminology" straight into german.
E.G. we say: "downloaden" instead of "heruterladen" and "updaten" instead of "auf den neuesten Stand bringen" (you can see why, it's too long and sounds strange). - smarba, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2your spelling is appalling too, apparently

- EpicSelekta, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2Unless you're doing radio, exclusively, I'd suggest getting real turntables (CDJs are fine). The majority of clubowners and almost all club DJs will look down on software, as it's considered cheating and tends to be the trademark of inexperience. You'll get massive style points for showing up with a pair of Technics 1200's.
- Markok765, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1I would like to, but I am a student and I can't afford real equipment :(
- AShriveledSack, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1most DJs use timecoded vinyls anyway which requires software/laptop, that's what i want to do but i have no cash

- EpicSelekta, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2I wanna see the rooms of Dutch DJs. I bet multimillionaire DJs like Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, and Armin van Buuren have amazing residences.
