Second, it is some obscure village. Our culture goes back thousands of years. You cannot expect every single person can be considered "educated" by western standards in short span of time as we have had since our Independence. But just because of this isolated event, your average American is going to think that we still live in jungles or go to work on our horses and camels.

Firstly, this incident took place in some remote village in India and such incidents are bizarre. So, don't go around asking your Indian friends if they practice this ritual. They would ultimately end up laughing at your stupidity. Secondly, it is superstition.. as simple as that. There is no scientific explanation for such practices. And obviously it is not under Indian law. Once a year I participate in a bizarre ritual wherein I hide brightly painted eggs around my and my neighbors' houses, often in the garden or around the bases of trees, to celebrate rebirth and renewal. Small children are then invited to search for these eggs and are rewarded with sweets or money when they find them. Later in the day, we and other members of the community head to a communal hall where we listen to our local religious leader and sing traditional hymns in a language none of us understand. After, several families meet to celebrate with a feast.

This is also the case in many other countries like Saudi Arabia where their was an article of a girl being engaged to a much older man. That is also un acceptable by most Saudi's but unfortunately due to lack of education in many of these similar countries some people still continue these outdated practices such as marrying a frog in India or an underage girl in Arabia.
