- Murrabbit, on 11/06/2009, -1/+54I think the author goes a bit far in trying to pin everything on Kussenich just because he was briefly mayor once some 30 years ago. Something tells me that if a town is still having so much trouble after getting into some financial difficulty three decades ago that it's got bigger problems than one ***** mayor.
- montroller, on 11/06/2009, -2/+51"She'll turn up"
I would have spit in that cops face. *typed safely from my bed* - CaptainPanda, on 11/06/2009, -2/+35What the *****?
- LibertariansLOL, on 11/06/2009, -1/+29but at least we get automatic tickets for running lights whose yellow periods last .2 seconds
- sabach, on 11/06/2009, -1/+27From wikipedia...
"After Kucinich refused to sell Muni Light, Cleveland's publicly owned electric utility, the Cleveland mafia put out a hit on Kucinich. A hitman from Maryland planned to shoot him in the head during the Columbus Day Parade, but the plot fell apart when Kucinich was hospitalized and missed the event."
"In 1998 the council honored him (Kucinich) for having the "courage and foresight" to stand up to the banks and saving the city an estimated $195 million between 1985 and 1995."
I suppose it depends on how you look at it. I remember all this, at the time it was all hate on Dennis the Menace. Now most everyone gets what he was trying to do, and it turned out he was right. - sentry21, on 11/06/2009, -1/+20They were too busy eating donuts and pulling people going 5 over.
- juliusthecat, on 11/06/2009, -2/+20Cleveland seems like an optimal place to do anything illegal if this is the overall competence of the cops.
- Murrabbit, on 11/06/2009, -6/+23This is why I keep those hippy kids with their tricked out van and bet St. Bernard on speed dial. Cops ain't gonna do nothin' but at least I know they'll get to the bottom of things for the price of a few dog biscuits.
- askantik, on 11/06/2009, -2/+18FTA: "This is a town that's barely functioned since presidential wannabe Dennis Kucinich ran it into bankruptcy during his brief term as mayor 30 years ago."
Biased article much? May I suggest the truth of what happened:
The big controversy when Kucinich was mayor was that the city was broke as hell but he wouldn't sell Muny Light. Most of the people got all pissy and voted him out, but later realized he was actually doing the right thing (instead of caving in order to stay in politics). He was out of politics for many years and eventually came back as a state senator and now has been a House member since 1996. Let me quote:
From Wikipedia: "Specifically, it was the Cleveland Trust Company that suddenly required all of the city's debts be paid in full, which forced the city into default, after news of Kucinich's refusal to sell the city utility. For years these debts were routinely rolled over, pending future payment, until Kucinich's announcement was made public. In 1998 the council honored him for having the "courage and foresight" to stand up to the banks and saving the city an estimated $195 million between 1985 and 1995."
I don't care if the article is accurate about ***** police-- that has nothing to do with Kucinich and the guy who wrote this is just a jackass. Then he shows a picture of Kucinich and says he turns his head-- last time I checked, Congressmen vote in Washington on federal law and represent their constituency IN WASHINGTON DC. Kucinich doesn't have the power or authority to ***** clean up the city police. What the *****?
Buried. - jamesdew, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13but the cops WERE called, repeatedly. They didn't do anything.
- sgfreak784, on 11/06/2009, -2/+15You stay classy, Cleveland.
- CrazedLeper, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13The police actually gave Jefferey Dahmer back his last victim. They even escorted them to the house that had several bodies in it and then laughed about it later.
- askantik, on 11/06/2009, -2/+14As for him "gallivanting around the country instead of being at home," may I remind you that virtually all of the major candidates for President were in some type of political office at the time. What the ***** else would he do? And he was still a better Congressman that 90% of the others who weren't running for President.
And FYI, the source for the $195 million is the LA Times. You gonna say that's not a valid source, too?
But what REALLY agitates me is when ***** geniuses don't get that UFO = unidentified flying object. UFO DOES NOT mean, "I saw little green men." Nice straw man argument though. And ***** ***** Tim Russert for asking that retarded question. That had absolutely NOTHING to do with Kucinich's campaign or ANY issue whatsoever. - defteats, on 11/06/2009, -1/+13Cleveland tourism video, 49s.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZzgAjjuqZM - pathfinder, on 11/06/2009, -0/+12Actually, we have traffic cameras now that write you a $100 ticket for 5 over, so scratch that off the list of duties. Get in a wreck or get your car broken into around here and the cops won't even show up. You call them, and they tell you to come down to a station a file a report. Actually, I'll clarify that. If you get in a wreck in front of a parking meter, a cop will show up within 10 seconds of your time expiring. They're pretty active when it comes to "investigating" parking violations.
- KibblesnBitts, on 11/06/2009, -1/+12Utterly repulsive, Dugg for awareness.
- Anub1s, on 11/06/2009, -1/+12Well, I now know to never take a vacation to Cleveland, something bad goes down and it sounds like you're basically *****.
- M3tALHaz3, on 11/06/2009, -1/+11Sorry, that is incorrect
I would have accepted ***** tha police or ***** da police - Foenetik, on 11/06/2009, -1/+10clearly a case of "not my job".
- clyde2801, on 11/06/2009, -0/+9And NOT in a good way...
- EspriteX, on 11/06/2009, -3/+12This story reads like a Fox News article. Insanely right slanted.
- seearees, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8except the article described a number of events, not just one.
- jamesdew, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7Well I have never been the the US but I don't really see how that is relevant.
I never said the area was a warzone I have no idea and I don't pretend to. My only point was that you stated that the neighbours didn't do anything about it, yet the article cites a number of cases in which they DID do something about it, call the cops. Are you suggesting they didn't really call the cops and the journalist just made that up? - codered1322, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7Scooby was a Great Dane.
- kitkat102, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6Sounds a bit lit like the modern British police under Labours disastrous mismanagement. Only way to get a response is to tell them someone is spraying racist graffitti on a wall. They'll be there mob handed within seconds.
- mwalker05, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6wait, so Dennis Kucinich was the one who raped and murdered those women?
- jamesdew, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Nice deflection, you said neighbours didn't do anything, I said yes they did they called the police, you have not addressed the point, just given other unfounded examples of how some other people did not do anything.
A valid retort (not sure why I am arguing for you) could be. "Yes it is true a minority did contact the police in extreme circumstances but this does not excuse the inaction of the rest of the neighbourhood"
But instead you point out that I'm not an American, say other things not relevant to what I actually said and bring up things about Obama.
Perhaps you should be a politician. - TexMexRex, on 11/06/2009, -5/+10A single event should always be used to judge a large group of people. 10,000+ Cleveland law enforcement officers are all to blame for this personally.
- russkie69, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5This story seems to share elements w/ the Jeffrey Dahmer story. Bad smells don't seem to be enough. About 20 years ago, a little old lady who ran a boarding house for seniors in San Francisco was killing her tenants, burying them under her rose garden and collecting their SS checks. Neighbors complained bitterly about the smell of her yard, health inspectors came by, etc. She would say, "Oh that's the fish emulsion that I use to fertilize my roses. Aren't they pretty?" If she'd planted more lavendar and night blooming jasmine, she might have gotten away with it. I think the fellow who dugg this story just wanted to bring it to the attention of his fellow Diggers. Let's put aside assumptions, etc. I digg stories that I think are awful sometimes because I want the community to see them. I've only voted to bury 2 stories since I've signed up. I appreciate the fact that the person who voted to bury this story provided a rationale for that. Very honest. Most Diggers are honest and forthright people. Remember, even though it's virtual, we are a community!
- droppolo, on 11/06/2009, -4/+8Im sure the guy who dugg this article is the type that would whine because the police came to his house to perform an illegal search.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4I believe this happened in the Dahmer case too, one of his victims was running down a public street in broad daylight naked and the cops wrapped him up in a towel and gave him BACK to Dahmer thinking it was just a gay love spat.
- Jpatano, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4everyone should whine if the police perform an illegal search... IT'S ILLEGAL
- Ruefus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3This opinion from someone in the UK, who only knows what he reads. I live 30 miles from Cleveland. The war-zone this article purports is total *****. I'm not saying the police aren't at fault in some way, but use some common sense, stop reading the map and think that it's even close to the whole story.
- Zippo, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4No wonder people distrust the police...
- aztecmummy, on 11/06/2009, -4/+7"-- and never, ever investigate thieving Democratic officials."
Everything is the Democrats fault, yes. - vercors, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Lord, apparently Walter Winchell came back from the dead. Does anyone believe the police ignored evidence of a murder? Really?
- buckrogers1965, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3How could the cops not smell the bodies when they showed up so many times?
- Jpatano, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3were you seriously considering vacationing in cleveland to begin with ? There's really nothing here... the rock and roll hall of fame is about it, and i wouldn't plan a vacation around that.
- TexMexRex, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3Yes, all the Police of Cleveland were involved in these several incedents not just a few officers at a small precinct. And no members of the public share any blame. I am shocked the article mentioned such things as: " Public theft and corruption is so pervasive that, just this week, voters elected Jeffrey Johnson to the city council -- even though he was convicted as a state senator for extorting $17,000 from grocers." Obviously the Police should be able to operate at 100% efficiency under these conditions.
- askantik, on 11/06/2009, -3/+5Yes. That's why I buried it.
- goatworship, on 11/20/2009, -0/+2They probably did, but didn't want to earn themselves a pile of paperwork by investigating.
- zip000, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2This article is appalling in its details, but what is with all the anti-Democratic points all over the place? Does Cleveland's government suck? It sounds like it. Is the city Democratic? I dunno, maybe, but either way it isn't BECAUSE they are democrats; its because they are lazy and/or corrupt *****.
- Ruefus, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3I'm suggesting people living day-to-day with this guy for years and years never saw ELEVEN bodies - even when the stench drew attention to the area. People were having PARTIES in this guy's place, and no one saw anything. If people standing right next to the guy - in his home for extended periods - saw nothing.....how will a cop coming by on totally unrelated affairs that may have never set foot in the place notice anything?
Blaming the police for the whole thing is like blaming Obama for everything. Which, BTW, we try to do daily.....but that's another discussion. - Ruefus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I thought people in the UK understood sarcasm and at least a little dry humor.
Call it a deflection - or an argument if you like. I never understand why people instantly think someone discussing an opposing viewpoint instantly describes an argument. I don't agree with you and you don't agree with me. So what? If I wanted to argue, I'd have called you an idiot by now. But I haven't done that. Called you an idiot, that is.
Most of my comments have been about the article and not you. You're not the person I've got the problem with. The author is. If you read it again - I didn't say they didn't do anything. I said they (the neighbors) never saw anything. The war-zone comment was aimed directly and unmistakably at the article - and not you.
No one ever called the police and said "Hey....there are a bunch of dead bodies in this guy's house." The police were called on things totally unrelated to the smell or the fact that this guy is apparently a mass-murderer. The point is - people in close proximity to this guy had NO IDEA what he'd done. - buckrogers1965, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1It is not illegal to get a warrant to investigate someones home for accusations of a woman being strangled and raped, when the guy at the house was actually convicted of strangling and raping a woman and is a registered sex offender.
- PdxPhoenix, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Not to defend them, but they do tend to need a _live_ witness to make a complaint (or find a dead body) before they can do anything... at least that's how it's _supposed_ to work.
- sonmarie, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1wait...so people called the police....they came, and did nothing?? sad to say this, but its not that shocking
- sabach, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2The Nautica Stage in The Flats is a great place to take in a show. Has one of the best zoos I've ever been to as well. But yeah, I wouldn't call it a vacation spot.
