Given that "to be or not to be -- that is the question" is, less ambiguously, the statement "the question is: should i continue to live, or should i kill myself", we can surmise that it's an assignment of a boolean valued function (should_commit_suicide) to a variable (the_question):
the_question = should_commit_suicide;
