Don't you wish the billions of dollars going into defense spending would be spent on nice stuff like this in the united states? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55Well, if I lived in Kazakhstan, I'd say something like "wouldn't it be nice if the government didn't keep all of the oil money to spend as it pleases, and give some of it back to the people?"
- schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -7/+52ya here in alaska pretty much our whole gov't is run by oil money, we split the profit with the oil companys 3 ways between the state, the company, and the federal gov. we've got no sales tax no income tax, plus every alaskan citizen is given around 1500 bucks a year from the oil revenue. capitalism FTW!
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46Make great sexytime!
- z23rdhsuan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42yeah right because until you heard about Kazakhstan, nothing much was going on there.
- TalonHawk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39I guess if there's a movie out that makes others think everyone in your country lives in tents, you might as well run with it..
- DoraLives, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31Thunderstorm.
Tornado.
Fire.
Vandals.
Bomb.
Earthquake.
This oughtta be something to keep an eye on. - ACityInOhio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19You know, if this project works as intended, similar designs could make a lot of extreme weather locales more livable for scores of people. It's nice to see oil investment dollars improving the standard of living for urban Kazakhs...if it works, that is.
- TimoP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22They're propably trying to keep the jews out.
- lhnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Nice to see them improve the standard of living for the incredibly wealthy.
Those are the people that are going to use it after all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -31/+48All the billions spent on social programs could also be put somewhere better. Like back into the paychecks that it was taken (stolen) out of.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This will either be one of the coolest engineering feats of the decade or be featured in the next installment of "engineering disasters."
If it does work, entire areas of the world might become habitable for people, livestock, and crops. Northern Canada, Alaska, Siberia... - lhnz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Make benefit glorious nation of Kazakhstan!
- schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19iggee85 that would be true if it were on private land, but it's not. they found the oil on state and federal land. then the oil company barterd the deal with Alaskan and federal gov. we aren't forcing BP to do anything. if it wasn't worth it they'd go somewhere else like south america to get the oil cheaper, but the social instability makes it a high risk. just becasue the gov, didn't just give all their land away to the oil company does not make it socialist. it makes us fiscally responsible.
- aphexmandelbrot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The tent city has a jew-fly. Sort of like the rain-fly on a tent, only for jews.
- Xyleene, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16wa wa we wa!!!
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16"Underneath, in an area larger than 10 football stadiums, "
Ahh yes, of course, because we're too stupid to understand real measurements. All area measurements are measured in 'football stadiums,' All information measurments must be measured in 'Libraries of congress."
Please, GOD, PLEASE why can't they just use normal units! - Gullop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I don't think they can talk about Kazakhstan anymore without everyone thinking "Borat".
- djAnakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Does anyone give a ***** what Borat has to say about this!? Christ! I'm so tired of hearing about Borat. HE'S AN ASS!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yes...but do they have enough cages for all the women?
>.> - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So..
Do the Jews stay in, or out?
Is it still necessary for them to wear blue hats?
Anyways...this seems like Kazakhstan trying to sound like a modern country after all the Borat ***** going on. - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Plus, isn't it "stadia"?
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no no, that's why they are going to build a giant well in the center of town ;)
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"ya here in alaska pretty much our whole gov't is run by oil money, we split the profit with the oil companys 3 ways between the state, the company, and the federal gov. we've got no sales tax no income tax, plus every alaskan citizen is given around 1500 bucks a year from the oil revenue. capitalism FTW!"
Capitalism? Where?
The US kicked Iran's secular elected Prime Minister out because he wanted to split BP's oil revenue there (back when they were called Ajax) 50/50 between the state and the company. Our motivation? To stop the spread of socialism. - OnoTadaki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Where are they getting the funding?"
What are you smoking? Kazakhstan has an estimated 6 billion tons of oil deposits. They are one of the top countries in the world as far as wealth is concerned. - rsmaniak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9this will keep gypsies away for sure...
- JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Good morning! Oh, and in case I don't see ya - Good afternoon, good evening and good night!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did anyone else think of Midgar from Final Fantasy VII?
The tent is being made from special materia that absorbs sunlight to create the effect of summer inside. - chickenselects, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7what the hell are you talking about?
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@dax: you really don't understand who the movie is actually satirizing, do you? not too sharp eh...
- hwood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i wonder what the breethable air feees will be in this place...
you know that it won't be free. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Oh, Kazakhstan, largest tent in world"...
- Oobitsa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Astana is a cold windy pit of a city. Anything they can do to convince its residents that they are someplace else is a good, noble gesture.
- argikon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Do you have any idea what Borat is going to do to for the Kazakh economy?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21112006/344/borat-boosts-tourism-kazakhstan.html
Six months ago, the majority of "white men" had never heard of Kazhakhstan. - isRendom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I live in Kazakhstan. And that is Sucks!
- gardnert1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1astana is probably to coolest and best designed city in the world. Look up its history and you will not believe that this is a city in central Asia.
- CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3great success!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3mr genious, please transfer some iq points to the mentally challenged.
- HaroldHupmobile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Makes me think of Denver International Airport, but on a much larger scale.
- amadeusdemarzi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9I wonder, many prostitutes had they to sell for get money to build glorious kazak tent?!
- mwproductions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks like a larger version of the United States pavilion from the 1974 World's Fair here in Spokane, WA.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/21698182@N00/182374762/ - usbserial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe they'll have giant window-flaps for their giant tent to let it cool off inside. And a giant portable fan.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think they should use there money to fix there social system.
- schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ZenMojo
I didn't say anything about bush. bush is a *****. he gives a rats ass about fiscal responcibility. he only cares about his corperete buddies. Alaska is different. Alaksa != Bush. please do not attribute a bush stereotype to all Americans. I believe he is wrecking America. - emptycan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hehe, this sounds nice. Nothing bad with improving living conditions for the residents. At least some of that oil money is spent for the country and not going into the pockets of country leaders...
- aphexmandelbrot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6All the talk about them as an underdeveloped nation... they finally reply back to the Western world by building a city. Not just any city... but a city inside a tent. Who's advanced now!?
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Getting too wealthy too fast is like giving a teenager too much responsibility too soon... you have a 20% chance of things working out nicely and an 80% chance of things getting waaaay out of control.
- MistressRoninS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I still think they took the idea from one of the Bujerban cities in FFXII
