http://www.picturesinn.com/_Japan_public_sleeping_pic - xerexes1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+92I am assuming that there is a very low crime rate in Japan.
- Lane, on 10/10/2007, -3/+78anime marathons are taking their toll on the population
- trghpy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+66Japan... Taking power naps to the next level.
..
Maybe this is a sign that polyphasic sleeping is a hit in Japan. - fullback, on 10/10/2007, -6/+67I didn't think I could ever fall asleep on the trains when I moved to Japan, but I do now. A five or ten minute nap is refreshing when you realize that no one cares, no policeman will arrest you, and you won't wake up and find your wallet gone.
(*Warning* Don't try this in the land of the people who think they are free.) - Jareth86, on 10/10/2007, -14/+71Oh my god, it's Jackie Chan!
- hrtattx, on 10/10/2007, -8/+45just when you thought japan couldn't get weirder.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39I long ago stopped considering that, it was futile.
- shortarabguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36You have random Japanese businessmen passed out on the floor with vomit all over their shirts in your lecture room?
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36Are we sure they're not dead?
- firedrillduckie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Narcolepsy*
A short trip to Google solves all of your spelling needs! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Working to much can cause things like these, and they are in Japan ..
- donsherio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Sleeping on trains is VERY common in Japan. People do it all the time because a lot of people tend to be riding until the end of the line. Usually thats Tokyo if they work there. Hence, they just get on, and go to bed. The crime rate is very low in Japan. Everyone respects each other's space & things and they don't usually worry about having something stolen. I however, have NOT seen the sleeping in the middle streets thing. To me thats pretty weird and uncommon to see in Japan. But yeah... all of those train shots.... Something you'd see everyday :p People are just tired :p
- Falldog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25There are tons of people here that do that, although not generally as in the open so publicly.
- sepelester, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25People fall asleep. You think of rape. Please don't move to my neighbourhood.
- Tenlow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23I was just thinking "someone should really roll him onto his side"
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Most of them are businessmen.
- DarthMalcontent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Oh my god, it's Ethan Hawke!
- xerexes1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22If this wasn't captioned as sleeping in public, I would have assumed that these people were dead.
- bluehavana, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21This happens all the time in Japan, especially on the train. Many Japanese people also sleep/relax in their car at lunch or just on the side of the road. Nobody will ever bother you unless you are blocking something. The laws protecting homeless people are harsh if you try to "mess" with them too.
- Tankslap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I know its Friday but you've gotta lay off the sauce.
- j1337, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22It's actually a pretty common site here in Japan...
- super_spyder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Nah, looks like some one tubgirled all over him.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Oh my God, It's Malcolm in middle!
- om3ganet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Heh, I've seen several (in Japan) wearing clothing that would be usually worn in subzero temperatures, when it was 40 degrees celcius (bloody hot), while sleeping on a park bench. They certainly are weird.
- SydneyHopper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20It does highlight how regimentalized our sleep has become- the right
clothes and the right bed and the right blankets and the right
partner and the right temperature and the right amount of
light. The body will sleep, anywhere. It doesn't need
the complications that we surround it with.
We could sleep on the tusk of an elephant, if tired enough. - thailand1972, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24Well, I'd rather live in a country that doesn't work me into the ground to the point I'm falling asleep on public transport. Japanese are tired because their lives are all about duty and work with very little fun and spontaneity. I honestly think the monotony contributes to the tiredness too.
And I have worked in Japan for 2 years - and I DID fall asleep on my daily roundtrip to Kinshichou from Chiba - I do know what I'm talking about. Japan is weird and wonderful to the tourist / English teacher. Try being a salaryman, housewife, or kid going to cram school every evening after normal school (and on the weekends). I **know** I am in the land of the free after my years in Japan. - shirosamurai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18So it's 3:37 in the morning and I had nothing to do. I clicked on this dude's name and looked at all the other posts he has made on digg. I can safely say he may be the number one contender for the 'retarded ass comments' award.
- VEGETAble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19what the hell, their beggars dress better than our businessmen.
- re0turin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17But I'm not even a boy.
- OutThisLife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Japan
- filefly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17I've been known to ***** during the day too, and I don't have narcolepsy.
- DesertFlyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Wow, if that is your friend, tell him to get a life.
- norbiu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15You must be new here.
- fLUx1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I'd be scared of sleeping for 14 hrs on a train, and waking up to a £500 bill for going from London to Edinburgh god knows how many times! ;/
- ahatter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16you would get robbed quick doing that here.
- crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16(At a random metro station)
- Hey, did you see that girl, she fell asleep!
- Yeah. What should we do?
- I don't know. I thought we could.. rape?
- Hmm.. Since she's sleeping..
- GO GO GO! - DarthMalcontent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Yes, you are!
- TVarmy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Yep. I think NYC has something like 317x more crime than the cities on Osaka, which are the Japanese cities with the most crime.
- Price, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13The guy who got 'slapped' (If you wanna call it that) didn't even wake up. You fail big time, retard(s).
- tucktan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12any body have a super soaker
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12the last guy looks like he puked on himself
- shortarabguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Did those three lines actually have anything to do with each other or did you just arbitrarily break out into a racist comment midway through your post?
- brazileir0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Power naps = productivity.
- lordmetroid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Specially if you miss the last train home...
- partyfavor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14yeah they are called homeless people
- msqueak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11North America includes Canada.
- fkuall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10When I was a child, my parents would occasionally get a Japanese farm-stay to help out on our farm. One young man slept only 2 hours a day in Japan because he would work all day, and then go to university all night. He only slept about 1 hour at home and one hour while commuting. He had narcolepsy for many years.
He also saw the stars with his own eyes for the first time while at our place, the light pollution where he lived washed out the sky his entire life.
Quite the different culture. - zachgc, on 10/10/2007, -9/+19WTF are you talking about? I've lived in NY for more than 4 years now and I fall asleep on the train at least 3 or 4 times a week and have NEVER had a problem. Don't be a jerk.
