- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -5/+44Mr. Horn sounds like a more aware neighbor than most; though calling 911 already fulfilled his duties. If you don't want to get shot while committing a burglary -- don't rob a home! It's THAT simple.
- whiteknives, on 07/09/2008, -1/+40What the hell does this have to do with iPods?
- JoshJaros, on 07/08/2008, -3/+33my crap + you stealing it = you get shot
this should be an unspoken law - waxoff, on 07/08/2008, -2/+30The reason people don't see anything wrong with it is because there is nothing wrong with it. Burglarize a home and you risk getting killed. If you don't like it, don't rob anybody.
- t3hmyth, on 07/08/2008, -3/+28I hate it when bloggers ask questions like "Have the lines of self defense and murder been blurred beyond distinction?" And then don't provide any insights themselves. It's just self-important and gives the weak illusion that they're trying to say something.
- Xenth, on 07/08/2008, -2/+23Some criminals were shot breaking into a house. Why would we see anything wrong with that?
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -1/+20Shoot first and ask questions later...what's the problem? On a more serious note... how the hell do you wield a shotgun, shoot two people with it, and carry on a phone conversation at the same time? Joe Horn must be a relative of Walker Texas Ranger.
- woodyex1, on 07/08/2008, -1/+15When the thieves become more afraid of dying then continuing their break-ins and criminal activity, crime will drop. The police cannot be everywhere and spend 99% of their time filling out reports AFTER the crime. The right to own property includes the right to prevent someone from stealing it. Waiting 10 minutes for the cops to arrive while the thief gets away only encourages more thieves. They make the decision: is that stereo worth my life? Their decision, not mine. - Qoute from the link.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -3/+17They should change the law to the castles law as shooting criminals on your own property just isn't enough these days.
- oldhick, on 07/09/2008, -1/+14I don't submit Digg articles and I still have an opinion. Wrap your mind around that *****!
- dlgtho, on 07/09/2008, -0/+13he should have used a sniper rifle, no need to leave the house
- centerblack, on 07/09/2008, -0/+14We're not talking about the state executing people for j-walking. We're talking about a Texas law that says if 3 masked men break into your house, you or your neighbors have the right to stop them with deadly force.
- oldhick, on 07/09/2008, -2/+12Why wait for the police? What can they do that you can't? That's one of the many problems we face today is lack of will... People are hit by cars and cameras catch person after person just passing by without helping. People get shot, raped, or victimized in countless ways and everyone 'waits' for help to arrive.
Be a ***** man. If you see your neighbors house being broken into stop it from happening. When a man with gun says "move and your dead", stop moving. Its simple. They took a risk when the decided to break into a house and they paid the price. Case closed. - benologist, on 07/08/2008, -3/+13Your digg record speaks volumes too - 18 diggs in 3 minutes an hour back! Don't let a bunch of retards who only digg your crap so you'll digg theirs fool you into thinking your blog really matters.
- louiebaur, on 07/08/2008, -5/+14Boy is this statement true! What good is the right to bear arms if there is no right to pop a cap in someone as I see fit?
- Apophis574, on 07/08/2008, -3/+12Wtf. Idiotic statement? Not one decent article? Who the ***** are you to say what is and is not a decent article? And how the hell was that an idiotic statement? An idiotic statement would be "***** you bcuban", not what he said.
- centerblack, on 07/09/2008, -1/+9?????????????????
Trespassing.
Stealing.
Don't.
Simple. - oldhick, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6Banks are told to cooperate and get the robber out. Nice try though.
- Merendino, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6He knew they were robbing the house, they climbed out of the window with sacks of his neighboor's belongings.
- thedarkwolf, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6awesome. So now when I'm out running and listening to my tunes I'd have to wonder if someone from Apple or the government was watching my every move.
Haha, I'm kidding myself. They don't care about me at all. I hope... - mrmontrose, on 07/08/2008, -1/+6People rob banks all the time, and they usually have armed guards.
- twister17e, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5How do you know that just stealing all your stuff is all they are going to do? What would you do, if somebody unknown was inside your house, call the cops and wait 15+ minutes? By that time it could be to late? An example, about 2 weeks ago in my town, a lady's house was broken into about 3:30am and she was beaten severely AFTER she was forced to let in another robber from outside the house.
- spyraled, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7I'd hate to be your neighbor then if you'd just sit back and watch my home get robbed.
- btschul, on 07/09/2008, -6/+12I think the moral of this story is: Don't hop the border and then rob some ***** Texan's house, and you won't get ***** shot. It's not that hard, people.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5Given that illegal immigrants have a hard enough time not following the "Don't hop the border" part of the rule, it's not unreasonable to assume that they don't respect the rest of the rule or any of our other rules in general.
There was a professor at my university who was pro-illegal immigrant until a few of them jumped him and beat him half to death; understandably, he has since changed his view... - inactive, on 07/09/2008, -3/+7ok thank god i live in texas and not some leftist hot bed because I would have done the same *****. those scum bags deserved to die. and brian look at the facts. illegals robbed a house. joe called the cops and they did nothing. joe said he was going to go into the front yard and confront them and then did. and they finally decided to get off of their asses after he said he was going to take care of it. this mess is on the police for have ***** response time. Houston cops are like Dallas cops. they will get to it when they feel like it. we triggered the silent alarm at my work in Dallas after some crack head threatened to shoot us and the cops came by 1 1/2 hours later to make sure things were ok (though to point out the suburbs are different). about 5 years ago one of my friends was out of town. he came back in town to find all of his stuff being carried out of his place. he called the cops multiple times over about 30 minutes and they did nothing until he bluffed and called the cops and told them that they had 5 minutes before he went and shot the burglars (he had no gun). They showed up 3 minutes later to watch the perpetrators run off. If you live in a well policed suburb then great call the cops when you or your neighbors house is being broken into and they will be there fast. But if you live in one of the major metropolitan areas expect the cops to not give a *****.
Brian this seems illogical to you probably because you are rich and live in a nice well policed area. not all of us are so lucky. count your blessings.
oh and BTW to everyone Joe was well within his rights. Texas law allows you to use lethal force if someone is breaking into a protected place. if you don't like that then I suggest you stay the hell out of Texas. Justice is severed by a jury of your peers. Joe's peers said he broke no law. - billbugger, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Boom, Headshot!
- palmer, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6The Branding Goblin strikes again.
- etherreal, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4@Diggnabit...what you really mean is "wait a half hour for the police to show up while the criminals escape." This is what happens most of the time. Joe Horn is a hero.
- etherreal, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I agree. This guy is right up there with the nuts that think if we allow every person to bear arms that we will be having shootouts in the streets. What he forgets is simple:
1) 99% of all people wish to avoid conflicts. These people dont want to fire a gun unless they really have to.
2) Knowing that everyone is likely armed is a good repellent for the other 1% of society who would like to cause unprovoked harm. - dlgtho, on 07/09/2008, -4/+7he didn't want want to stop them, he wanted to kill them. he informed 911 operator and then he killed them.
- Moonkeeper, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5Joe Horn deserves a neighbor of the year award. When freedom of the individual is in the process of being taken away, there is nothing wrong with getting that freedom back, even on behalf of your neighbor.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3sorry necrodigg the law was on joe's side. you don't like it stay the hell out of texas. we won't miss you.
- ezisk, on 07/09/2008, -2/+5On FOX.
- Diggnabbit, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4This is crazy. Are people actually suggesting that you should be allowed to shoot anyone whom you see who is burglarizing a home? It wasn't even his own home.
There's no way that the traditional "castle doctrine" (which says you do not have to retreat and can use force against someone in your own home) supports this.
This is the case of a Texas grand jury saying, essentially, "sounds good to us. let's not indict him." and basically ignoring the actual law. - inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3and on top of what Merendin said when joe confronted them they threatened him. way to god damn many liberal apologists on digg
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3if she had a shotgun that might have ended with 2 dead ***** heads and one hero lady.
- thedarkwolf, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3I'm a little torn on this issue. I want the right to kill people who break into my house. That is reasonable force and self defense of my property. But this guy saw them breaking into his neighbors house, called the police, then killed them. And he intended to kill them, even telling the police what he was going to do.
Of course, if they had gotten away, the police might not have caught them. A large number of burglaries go unsolved all the time. Saying that he should have tried to stop them without killing them is not really fair either. What if one of the burglars had a gun?
So. he definitely went beyond protecting himself, but was he protecting his neighbor's property? I honestly don't know if this guy was right or wrong. I'll have to think it over. - gfxlonghorn, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2And to anyone who thinks this was racially motivated. He was shooting the burglars after they robbed his Vietnamese-American neighbor's house. I live pretty close to Pasadena, and this isn't exactly a redneck gun totting area. This is a Houston suburb, where a guy happened to have a gun, and felt the need to protect his neighbor's property.
- arjung, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2no ***** idea. buried as inaccurate.
- 0011002, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2wait so your argument is if something is illegal to have then no one could get it!? Wow why hasn't anyone tried that with drugs or beer!? Wow all those criminals will sure stop shooting people. I guess we should follow the UK's statement of letting their kids run wild and beat the hell out of people for no reason! Oh and also like the UK let them visit their sisters birthday for a weekend unsupervised when they are in jail.
- inactive, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2the jury doesn't agree
- jc7012, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4*iPod
- spyraled, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2@hollywood: Nice 2nd grade comeback there. That's the best you could come up with really? Really?
@Diggnabbit: I would hope if you're my neighbor I know what you look like. Also, you'd be crawling *into* the window, not out of it with a bag full of things. - thesals, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2there is its called a serial number, when plugged in itunes reports to apple where the serial number was plugged in at. they use that information for marketing data and such, but refuse to use it to track down stolen iPods. if they did, I might still have one an iPod
- ECas123, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2"No mom we'll be there next week so you can...hold on a sec "AH MY ***** LEG" so you can see your new grandson"
- etherreal, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Idaho has the best law in my opinion when it comes to justifiable homicide. It essentially states you are well within your rights to kill any person to prevent any felony, regardless of whether or not you or your property is at risk:
Idaho Statutes TITLE 18
CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS
CHAPTER 40
HOMICIDE
18-4009. JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE BY ANY PERSON. Homicide is also justifiable
when committed by any person in either of the following cases:
1. When resisting any attempt to murder any person, or to commit a
felony, or to do some great bodily injury upon any person; or,
2. When committed in defense of habitation, property or person, against
one who manifestly intends or endeavors, by violence or surprise, to commit a
felony, or against one who manifestly intends and endeavors, in a violent,
riotous or tumultuous manner, to enter the habitation of another for the
purpose of offering violence to any person therein; or,
3. When committed in the lawful defense of such person, or of a wife or
husband, parent, child, master, mistress or servant of such person, when there
is reasonable ground to apprehend a design to commit a felony or to do some
great bodily injury, and imminent danger of such design being accomplished;
but such person, or the person in whose behalf the defense was made, if he was
the assailant or engaged in mortal combat, must really and in good faith have
endeavored to decline any further struggle before the homicide was committed;
or,
4. When necessarily committed in attempting, by lawful ways and means, to
apprehend any person for any felony committed, or in lawfully suppressing any
riot, or in lawfully keeping and preserving the peace. - Diggnabbit, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Well, most states don't allow deadly force to protect property, even if it's your own.
- Lane, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4Come to Texas. Watch someone try to steal something and well show ya!
