- cmccool, on 02/05/2008, -0/+27i am an iowan, and my house has 5 cell phones and one landline.
- pizzas, on 02/05/2008, -1/+20i was wondering why iowa had so many landmines in the first place .
- danielgilbert, on 02/05/2008, -0/+16I read that as more cell phones than landmines...
- inactive, on 02/05/2008, -0/+14I was in Iowa. The reason is simple. They have Quest as your phone provider which sucks big time and people have no choice than to buy a cell phone. Plus cell phone deals in Iowa are better than rest of the country.
- stewartallyn, on 02/05/2008, -1/+14I live in Texas and have more cellphones that landlines. Any house with more than 3 people over the age of 12 probably have more cells than landlines, no matter what state they live in.
- wastedlife, on 02/05/2008, -0/+12Not really surprising, landlines are generally one per houshold, whereas cell phones are generally one per person.
- lekahe, on 02/05/2008, -0/+12I don't quite get the comparison to third-world countries. Finland is very advanced in this respect (because of Nokia) and since all members of the family have their own cellulars, the amount of landlines is decreasing all the time.
- SteelChicken, on 02/05/2008, -2/+13I haven't had a landline in 7 years. Why bother?
- MorbenDK, on 02/05/2008, -0/+10He's planting cell-phone seeds for the new year!
- Androfire, on 02/05/2008, -5/+14Can someone tell me how the picture is relevant to the subject?
- zoxx, on 02/05/2008, -1/+10The picture is a guy sitting on a tractor while talking on his cell phone. How is that not relevant to the subject?
- dienaked, on 02/05/2008, -3/+12Wow, that is really, truly, INCREDIBLY UNBELIEVABLE NEWS.
- Sparkster185, on 02/05/2008, -0/+7Sorry for comment abuse. This is blogspam. Original story: http://www.cellular-news.com/story/29025.php
- gstep, on 02/05/2008, -0/+7As an Iowan I will vouch for this. It has nothing to do with rural developing whatever. There's more cell phones because tons of kids have them and many people are dropping their landline service which is inconvenient and expensive. Many people only keep their landlines because its required for their DSL connections. As far as I know, this is not unique to Iowa. It's like this everywhere.
- MorbenDK, on 02/05/2008, -1/+7yeah, cuz those cell towers are blocked by all that air.
- shark72, on 02/05/2008, -0/+6Well, that's true, too: Iowa has more cell phones than land mines.
- holdencaulfield, on 02/05/2008, -0/+6Iowa here - 2 mobile phones, 0 landlines, 0 pigs, 0 cows, 0 tractors.
- minorthreat, on 02/05/2008, -2/+7an Iowan farmer on a cell phone looks relevant to me
- jsayreallen, on 02/05/2008, -1/+6I live in Iowa - much of the state are college towns, with several major universities in the state, and so much rural space.
- IEatHamburgers, on 02/05/2008, -0/+4It was all left over from World War II, silly. That's where we fought the Battle of the Bulge, where the Russians made their last stand, remember?
(Yes, I'm being sarcastic, and no, I'm not a Miss USA contestant) - gstep, on 02/05/2008, -0/+4Because people think that everyone in Iowa is a farmer, when actually very few are still farmers. And yes, I don't know a single farmer who doesn't have a cell phone.
- nmcvicke, on 02/05/2008, -0/+4Iowa 4tw my wife and I have each have a cell phone 0 landlines, our families have 8 cell phones and 2 landlines.
- aloser, on 02/05/2008, -0/+3[citation needed]
- alpha19, on 02/05/2008, -0/+3fellow iowan here... my household has 3 cell phones and 0 land lines, cell phones ftw
- inactive, on 02/05/2008, -2/+4Landlines? We don't need no stinking landlines!
- smergs, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing. Iowa is probably not the first state, and is definitely not the only state to have more cell phones than land lines. What would be more interesting is to see how many people have gotten rid of land lines to go cell only. I opted for Voip instead of a standard land line when I got married last year. Before then I didn't care to have any land line. I think I may be getting close to talking my wife into getting rid of that soon. We don't use it.
- Silince, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Being from Iowa I can never understand why people think we are some back-wood hick state with no access or understanding of technology. I use an iPhone (Jailbroken and unlocked BTW). My old job involved installation of Windows servers and upkeep on exchange databases for dozens of local law and agricultural businesses (those lawyers do love their Blackberry's). I live in a city of nearly 140,000 people, the main city in an overall metro area of over 306,000. Hardly the middle of no where. It's also not the largest metro area in the state (although it's the second largest). Just because we also have access to large, beautiful outdoor areas where we also enjoy camping and hiking doest make us ignorant to modern technology, in fact, it just makes it more useful.
- tdp301, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2I am from Iowa and our local telecommunications co-op is excellent. We live out of town but get 1Mbps internet and digital TV over the phone line for a decent price. Good service too.
- inactive, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2I have a T1 line to GOD not the phone company.
- solid12345, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2Cell phones are made for people who don't want to talk on the phone. You can't use the excuse you left your land line in the car when aunt betty is calling.
- HawkeyeMatt, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2*Des Moines
- holzp, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2And it has more cows than both combined. Big whoop.
- 1729, on 02/05/2008, -1/+3Because most Iowans are not farmers.
- 80hd, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2DSL bites.
$30 a month for 12/1 from Comcast/former Insight
$45 for 3/384k verizon (including landline) - bassgoonist, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2My grandpa who is a farmer has one, my grandpa who isn't does not...(both from Iowa fyi)
Combines have become surprisingly high tech over the years. The latest and greatest ones can drive them selves and as far as combines go are apparently affordable by the average farmer. (My ex lived on a farm so I found out about all this from her dad :-p) - dOOBiEx213, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2Awesome! Nothing like free brain tumors! I would put on my tin foil hat, but I'm afraid that would only increase the EMF strength.
- rugby4ward, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2I cannot imagine how a phone company can be less customer friendly than Qwest. I hate Qwest more than Osama Bin Laden. They should be considered a terrorist organization.
But honestly, they are probably not any different than any other damn company, good riddance. - 80hd, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2When I lived with my parents, we had 6 cells and no landline.
Special thanks to SBC's planning and logistics for bringing DSL to both East Chicago and Gary Indiana three years before the rest of the state where people might be likely to actually own computers. - FrostyFire, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2Go to www.cia.org and checkout the world fact book. Many countries have had more mobile phones over landlines for ages.
- inactive, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2To bad most of the polls have been dead on when it came to primary time.
Old RP really only had about 5% support afterall.... I guess spamming internet polls isnt the same thing as having supporters. - shark72, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2That's the machine that's used to detect and deactivate the land mines, of course.
- aduzik, on 02/05/2008, -0/+2My Iowan household has two cell phones and zero landlines. Actually, I don't know anyone under the age of about 35 that has a landline. Or, if they do, it's a VoIP phone, not POTS.
- vastrightwing, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1After finding out that it costs $12/mo + $10/mo taxes for metered service, I decided having a land line was a waste of money.
- hushermit, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1Landmines didn't read have fever sleep now.
- aduzik, on 02/05/2008, -1/+2Just barely. Cell signals don't propagate well through flat, open, treeless space.
- MCMLXXXII, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1phone companies are required to have battery backups and generators in each location and they can provide power to your phone for 4 to 48 hours during power outages..
- CharlesSaint, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1Iowan and AT&T wireless subscriber here living in the densest populated areas in Iowa, STILL waiting for 3G coverage...
- aloser, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1I live in Iowa and had no trouble with the small telecooperative in the rural town I lived in over the summer. The rates were dirt cheap, the DSL was as fast as you can generally get in rural America, and it's a coop so they disperse their earnings back to the subscribers at the end of the year. Granted, the same cooperative also runs the cable TV for the area.
Compared to dealing with QWEST in Des Moines, I can tell you that the telco is leaps and bounds better. I am lucky that in the city there are other options for high speed Internet because I'm pretty sure I would shoot myself if I had to deal with QWEST for internet as well as phone service. (Cell service though... Verizon is really the only viable option. Coverage and prices great. Features, not so much.) - br0pbr0p, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1I don't see how this is even newsworthy. In a lot of advanced countries and cities are likely in the same situation and it makes logical sense. Chances are, most household will have one or two land line at the most but can even one person can have more than one cell phone by themselves. Cell phones > land line can just mean people in the city/country are wealthy enough to afford it. Hell, in Hong Kong, there are more cell phones than people. The average is more than 1 cell phone per person.
