- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15They must have enjoyed the snow yesterday then. I live in Juneau...
Anyways, free ride out of Juneau? Good luck with that seeing there are NO ROADS OUT OF TOWN.
You really only have a 4 options:
1. Maybe they could hitch a ride and convince someone to pay for a ferry ticket to Haines or Skagway (Haines is cheaper, $36 each ) or hide underneath the seats or something and sneak aboard...
From Haines/Skagway you could hitch into Canada and make your way south (I just drove from Vancouver, BC to Juneau last month and it was an awesome drive!) unless you can hitch with someone going to Bellingham, WA.
Or find someone who needs a car shipped to Haines, Skagway or Washington on the ferry route as it's "Drivers Ride Free" until April.
Ferry Service website: http://www.ferryalaska.com
2: Convince an airlines to fly you back like how you got here. Try UPS or DHL even.
3: Contact the Alaska Legislature and convince them to build a road out of town to Skagway that so many people here want (and don't want). Might take a few years longer than you originally planned your journey though.
4: Swim. - Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20How exactly are they going to hitchhike to Hawaii?
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13So much for the GPS tracking. Nextel has zero coverage in Alaska
- lechatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8From that page:
note: the GPS map might not work until we find a way back from Alaska! - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How do you think alaska gets residents . . . they trick them into coming and then don't let them back out.
- RMSDL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6FYI. Last time Fiddy was in Alaska, he got a rifle pulled on him. Uh ohhhhhhhh.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm assuming you've never seen a globe...
- dietprozac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Yashar
They could hitch a ride on a container ship to Hawaii. Michael Palin did it in his "Around the World in 80 Days" series. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dont you mean end in alaska?
- Thater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@no8286
I think that's just where there GPS shut off during the flight. - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It doesn't take a Boy Scout to know you should always "Be Prepared"...
@ dietprozac: That show was fantastic. - migs87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4HAHAHAHA FREEKING IDIOTS, ....I can see it now. them to stuck together on a vespa like floyd and Larry from dumb and dumber! Fiddy would probably piss on Scotty and freeze themselves together! HAHHA
- oneredpaperclip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51. is out, cause they can't pay for rides.
2. is good. If they can find a cardboard box.
3. is really good, but doesn't look like Scotty took his shovel.
4. is a great idea if you don't like Fiddy. Fiddy can't swim. - asrope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think this is great, if you get near Colorado let me know and I'd pick you up and drive you to Denver. I called and there voice mail box was full.
- virtualscribe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When you click the map the web 2.0ie functionality makes it a good sized map, with zoom tools overlaid on it.
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, convincing someone to let them on a barge takes about a week to get to Washington I think.
If they took the ferry to Washington (convince someone to let them hide in their car so they don't pay... though I think that may be illegal) I think that takes 3 days.
Maybe plead someone at the boat docks or other airplane services to take them south... no idea how they'll get out of this one free or without convincing somone to pay for a ticket. - tywright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you tried text messaging 'hitch50' to 66937?? You get a message back to your phone with their eggzact location. I'm just a little bit addicted to it.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From wikipedia, the size of Greenland is about 2million square kilometers, and Africa is about 30 million square kilometers. Greenland is NOT half as big as Africa.
- dietprozac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is hitching a ride on a boat acceptable? sometimes container ships have extra berths that you can have for free in exchange for swabbing the decks or cooking or something. They could get all the way to Seattle or LA this way, but it might be slower than a land route.
- dietprozac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Doesn't telling people to click on the ads violate your adsense agreement?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great, yet another "watch us do this wild and crazy thing" website. Maybe they can trade a ride for a red paperclip, or trade a ride for one million dollars in advertising on their website.
This ***** is just getting old. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well i'm glad to help a fellow digger out! If you goto the Czech Republic make sure to get some of their absenth (the bitter kind).
- ianmack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read a new interview with Hitch 50's tech guy Heath Johns, on how they set up their GPS system and the future of location as we know it!
http://www.bravenewtraveler.com/2006/11/02/interview-with-heath-johns-resident-geek-for-hitch50com/ - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you could give them a ride!
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Goto the first post?
- bcwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the site: "Also, we can fly with Trevor and Josh from today to Anchorage before 10AM. Should we go??"
YES. I just moved from Juneau, now up in Anchorage. If they can get up here, they should jump on it. There are many more opportunities for hitching a ride up here than in Juneau. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The Great White North is Canada you moron, Alaska is the land of the midnight sun.
- avsa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Monolith2 "Great, yet another "watch us do this wild and crazy thing" website. Maybe they can trade a ride for a red paperclip"
funny you said that. The red paper clip guy is actually fiddy (or scotty i don't know) brother. And for your information yu can call the 'red paperclip guy' the 'canadian resident' guy, as that what he traded his paperclip for in the end... - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"We are now in Ketchikan, Alaska refueling our little Cessna before we head to Juneau for the night. The GPS doesn't have a signal up here, so you'll have to trust us that we are actually here. Or better yet, meet us for a nice steak dinner in Juneau later tonight."
- thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is there no way to read their blog posts in order? you can only read it backwards..
- Devon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The ride for free thing is a good idea. They might want to contact some local businesses because contractors are always shipping stuff to and from on the ferries and it costs more for the vehicle to be "unaccompanied."
- venuspcs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I am actually leaving Sunday and flying from Miami, FL to Athens, Greece to Backpack around Europe....My website isn't as cool (Web 2.0ish) as theirs, but I am going to post pictures, stories and videos of the entire trip (1 to 2 years) on the site. I am going to try and write/photograph stuff everyday so it should make for interesting reading/viewing.
Anyone interested please check it out at http://sightseeingtheworld.blogspot.com
PS - Feel free to click on a couple of the small (text ads by Google) each time you visit. I am leaving with a very limited amount of money so every little thing helps! - lintmonster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Just stick your thumb out at the airport and maybe show some leg in hopes to get out of Juneau. Or try the strip down maneuver shown in your video "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Hitchhiking", that will get some attention in the Great White North!
- no8286, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8Apparently they have figured it out. The site shows that they are in British Columbia right now.
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I should try to meet up with them whenever they get to Lincoln, Nebraska.
- hadak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i got half way thru the video, and got *really* sick of hearing cars pass.
- justinshattuck, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5I'm pretty sure they can come up with something ...
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Does anyone have a good link to the map? All I see on their site is a small postage-size map with no zoom or anything.
- belcarramac, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2knowing them - the'll come back to Seattle via Tokyo
- MYarms, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Why didn't they start in Alaska?
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Hmm, what's with the sizes of the little map on the right? It shows Alaska as being over half the size of china, and Greenland is gigantic, like half of Africa. Must just be an odd projection.
- oneredpaperclip, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2yeah, strip hitch will be clutch in Alaska. I hear Alaskans go bonkers for guys with their socks off.
- RyeSixSeven, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0BC - isnt that a "Home to Mammy" trip!
As for coming back, they might have to swim, or hitch with a whale. - HawaiianGuy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0Hope they can stand the cold up there. It won't be a nice site to see pruned up looking dudes hitchhiking
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2these guys are idiots.. I hope they get stuck in the middle of canada.
