- WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I went to jail once, they used toilet paper to fashion those caterer-burner things to heat water in a soda bottle (no, it didn't melt) and cook their ramen noodles. They started the fire using a q-tip and a empty lighter. I think i know where mcguyver learned all his tricks.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I worked at a military prison once. We did a cell search and found a spike made of toilet paper. This thing was as hard as nails. No joke. How? He used his toothpaste to cement and harden the shape. Every night he'd wet, smear, twist and dry. Every night he'd make the thing harder and sharper. Would've been nasty if we didn't catch it.
Surprising coming from him. He was the quiet nice guy... but when you work that kind of job you'll learn that there's a reason why he's like that. - MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24How do they find time to make these between watch TV, playing PS2, going to the library, eating free meals, rec time, love scenes in the shower, and prison riots?
- Iffrat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15sweet so next time im in jail.. i can shiv my way to the top
- blimpmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I moonlight as a counselor in a prison. Well, allright, it's my job. You can call them whatever you want, shanks, shivs, throttles, etc. They are meant for one thing; to kill. When an inmate uses a weapon on someone inside the walls or fences of a prison, he has one thing on his mind; to inflict as much damage on that person as he/she can.
Some of the more ingenious weapons I have seen were a gun made from a bar of soap. And it did fire. Another was a knife made from newspaper. And it was very sharp.
In the slide show it stated inmates are given plastic spoons instead of metal. Plastic can do just as much damage as metal. Plus, it's easier to break off in your victim!
No matter what you take away from the inmates they will always find a way to compensate for it. All they do is sit around all day and think. They don't think about making their lives better, they think about how to become a better criminal. - GlargTheKelfn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10the problem is, everyone else has them, so you better have one too. it's like gun control, as long as the bad guys have guns, the good guys need them too.
if i had to choose between more time and death, i choose more time. - Joshuarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I see desperation -- not ingenuity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I worked at a close/max security joint for 8 years, I saw many different shanks (never once heard them called a "shiv"). The most common was a toothbrush with a razor blade melted into the end. I found a set of "brass knuckles" made from a fork with wicked hooks on it, which I still have. If the role was reversed I'm pretty sure I'd do the same.
@Havs They do go to the hole for possession of a weapon, S/C (Security Control) the first time, L/C (Local Control) the next time, A/C (Administrative Control) the next time. The minimum amount of time you spend in A/C is 9 months. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yeah when I was locked up they were asking if i had brought cigs in with me and i asked how they were planning on smoking them if someone got them in. And they showed me the same trick.
- MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@thetaco82 -- Richard Dean Anderson is the ***** man, don't be ashamed.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5An ingenious use of everday objects, and I imagine I'd be forced to do the same if sentenced to live in such a violent setting.
I consider these convicts more resourceful than this design site, which apparently couldn't build a decent interface to load those images. - Negligence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dugg down because you have no idea what you're talking about. Try holding a tiny razor blade with two fingers. No problem, right? Now try holding a razor blade with two fingers while trying to fight someone off -and- stab at them at the same time. You just can't. The ingenuity is in devising a way to keep a razor blade(s) absolutely solid out of primitive materials with a friendly handle that makes the weapon as inflictive as possible. That comb was brilliant.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Okay, razor blades + anything isn't ingenious. It's a RAZOR blade.
- timxpx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@badave
"On the positive side, at least the people who made these are/were in jail and not wandering the streets with some of these things."
...what about the ones who are on the streets already that don't need shanks because they have firearms? - thetaco82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"McGuyver was an ex-con? Damn! I guess you learn something new each day."
Season one, episode 20. "The Escape." Yes, I own all seven seasons on DVD.
/me hangs his head in shame. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ingenuity born of desperation, perhaps, but that doesn't take away from the fact that a lot of those are pretty clever considering the limitations that they have to work with.
- GravyTrain6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4too bad the article is spread over 12 pages, and if i recall correctly, duggmirror only catches the first page.
- Digg4This, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Mythbusters did it.
Crossbow episode

I know I'd feel safer knowing I could carry my firearms to defend against a potential criminal. - juanotejano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ingenuous my ass! All they did was make shivs, ***** I can make a shiv, show me a prison built trebuchet and then I will be impressed.
- techwrekfix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have to think the people who come up with the really good weapon more than likely found a pretty good place to hide them from the guards.
- scuzzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Duggmirror didn't get it...
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Coral Cache (see duggmirror link) works well. On slashdot everyone uses coral, but on digg nobody even bothers if duggmirror doesn't get it...
- AloofDufus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I worked in military and federal prisons for twelve years, and also never heard of a "shiv." I think that's a Hollywoodized word for "shank."
I have a collection of interesting confiscated prison weapons (edged and projectile) & contraband (a cool hooch bucket & several intricate carved wood cigarette cases), somewhere in my shop that I should post online pics of...one of these days... - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's truly amazing the kind of skills some of these criminals have and what they can accomplish when given infinite free time and some basic supplies. For instance, on one of the Mythbusters episodes where they visited a jail (I can't remember which one), the jail had a small museum of various things that had been confiscated from prisoners. The inventory of weapons included everything from toilet paper knives to an actual -working- gun made only out of plumbing pipes.
- jshusta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4shouldn't you be working?
- Van3ck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I certainly wouldn't call these weapons "Ingenious". Deadly of course, but not very impressive.
What about the guys who have figured out how to make improvised explosives and make shift firearms out of typical materials found within prison? I would call those weapons "Ingenious"... not a pointed shard of folded iron. - Zoshchenko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree! I found this really interesting, but after image #6 hung half-loaded for a couple of minutes, I just gave up.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's surprising, since, you know, the site isn't down...
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1coral cache is blocked by a lot of corporate firewalls.
- wh00dini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this puts a whole new meaning on the term 'sit shiva'
- toxonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.designobserver.com/archives/shiv10.html
This one is most impressive. It appears that the maker tried to heat treat the blade using some kind of insulating material like clay. This would probably not give him the results he was looking for because the steel used for bed frames is cheap mild steel and doesnt contain enough carbon to surface harden. But at least he got it looking almost like a japanese tanto blade. The wave pattern that looks like rust is usually how a blade looks after heat treating with clay, before cleaning and polishing. It wouldnt work, but nice try. - phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2none of these weapons were "ingenious."
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2not when I have an hour long query running, tying up my machine for anything else useful, nope. thanks for checking in though, Nanny Fag.
- badave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5That website reminds me of the art museum downtown. I have to remind myself that these were far more recent than they appear.
On the positive side, at least the people who made these are/were in jail and not wandering the streets with some of these things. - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1These ain't *****. A friend of mine works at Riker's and brought me home some much more ingenious weapons than wrapping plexiglass with tape. Would couldn't think of that?
- brokin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0page doesnt load

- ours, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Singapore uses corporal punishment, and seems to work there."
Super example, citing a totalitarian dictatorial State-City. Sure, everything seems to work fine over there as long as you fit in and close you mouth. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2That was a very good episode! Its crazy how the smallest things can be made into weapons.
- kmb1794, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0not that cool.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2A battle for freedom and survival always brings out the genius in people.
- CedEx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I never understood the problem that western society has with corporal punishment?
I mean, some states go as far as capital punishment, but corporal punishment is deemed to inhumane?!
Singapore uses corporal punishment, and seems to work there. - datagod, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6It reminded me of a display of bronze-age weapons.
The sad thing is that most of these weapons are used to threaten people waiting in line for a PS3. - Slvgx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Crafty.
I gave up after 4 pages because it kept crashing. - ChemEng, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I thought those were called shanks, not shivs. Hrrmmm...
- feachador, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Where's the crossbow they made on Mythbusters? That seemed pretty deadly...
- Havs, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4It's pretty pitiful that the only punishment inmates get for making weapons is more time. That's no deterrent for the people in for life; which is a good portion of the people making these weapons. If any prisoner gets caught making, using, or in possession of a weapon they should be placed in solitary confinement for the rest of their prison terms (or for the rest of their lives if I had anything to say about it).
- SuperFarStucker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
.. site is already slowing down. Its pretty cool that duggmirror detects the referrer now and 'guesses' the story eh? -
