Can I bury this as a dupe now? Yeah, thought so.- mrASSMAN, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11Those didn't make the front page, this one did. Almost all front page stories have multiple submissions. Some stories get over 100 duplicates (esp. "breaking news"), but if only one makes the FP, there's no reason to bury it.
- moletimer, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Unless it's *****.

- ryuujinusa, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1I saw that above video on rescue 911 or cops i think. It was a very skilled shot. Another professional sniper shot, detailed explanation of it too.

- praveenmarkandu, on 03/31/2008, -13/+2"Shot!"
- Coestar, on 03/31/2008, -35/+77Was it really necessary to tackle him into a near backflip as he sat there, bewildered?
- wraptor347, on 03/31/2008, -8/+41He was reaching for his gun...
- scottpigeon, on 03/31/2008, -9/+59Which piece?
- eliburford, on 03/31/2008, -2/+28To take this argument further, I don't think anyone knew at the time that the gun was in three or more pieces.
- weeeezzll, on 03/31/2008, -0/+25... or that he didn't have some other weapon. For all they knew, he could have easily had another gun, or even a knife. When you are dealing with someone who is as unstable as this guy was, you never know what to expect. The cops did any amazing job in this situation. Every other ending can imagine only turns out worse.
- CedEx, on 03/31/2008, -4/+2Too bad they didn't let him draw his other weapon, the sniper could have shot that one out of his hand too... then we'd have two front page digg submissions! w00t!
- scottpigeon, on 03/31/2008, -9/+59Which piece?
- Erythroxylum, on 03/31/2008, -7/+21It made the clip better, so yeah, it was absolutely necessary. They should've put the boot in too for good measure.
- Malovech, on 03/31/2008, -0/+38In a situation like that where you have no clue what this guy is going to do next - yes. It seemed pretty rough, but the police had to move quickly and things aren't very gentle when you move that fast.
- typicalusername, on 03/31/2008, -4/+14Abso-*****-lutely it was necessary. Might as well give him a shinner too for ruining someone's perfectly good morning!
- VTWOOKIE, on 03/31/2008, -10/+0Neccessary.....No. Gratituously Violent.......perhaps. Totally Awesome.......definitely!
- DD00, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11Yes it was. I'm one of you who complains about the stupid police violence daily, but for once they actually have a reason to tackle someone. Sorry, but the guy had a gun and he was threatening to at least kill himself. They aren't going to just stroll on in and ask him to lay down. He could have another weapon on him or pickup the gun fast, they don't know if it's working or not.
Point being, if you don't want to get tackled by police don't sit in the street with a gun and threaten to kill anyone. - mrASSMAN, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7Really? You're not going to give them credit for saving the man's life? I guess some people just hate cops no matter what they do..
- lamiaconfitor, on 03/31/2008, -1/+11It has more to do with inertia, you aren't going to 'slowly' get to the guy, are you? no, so when you apprehend him, you transfer that energy. its not a f'ng pillow fight, you are trying to prevent a tragedy.
- mrgreenjeans9, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3.
- stdede, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0You obviously don't know any police officers (friend or relative) who have experienced a similar situation of a bewildered person turning superhuman in a split second!

- Brocclibob, on 03/31/2008, -5/+8That was an awesome shot, but i dunno about "Shot of the century". I thought the shot of the century was that American Army sniper who shot an insurgent in the head from over a mile away. I can't find the article now, but i read about it sometime last year.
- patentpending, on 03/31/2008, -0/+9Don't know if this is what you are talking about...
http://www.macleans.ca/canada/national/article.jsp ... - spyrochaete, on 03/31/2008, -1/+13Are you thinking of the Canadian sniper who broke the record in Afghanistan in 2003?
- charman2k6, on 03/31/2008, -4/+14It was actually a Canuck. In fact, Canadians have the best snipers in the world.
- Harbinger67, on 03/31/2008, -1/+14I would hope so. All that moose and beaver hunting they do has gotta count for something.
- HenvY, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5how on earth could you know that?
- Fstop16, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3I agree. That's one of the most ridiculous statements I have read in a long time. An individual can be "the best" in the world, but just because you were born in a certain part of the world doesn't make you "the best" in anything.
- anoriginalname, on 04/05/2008, -0/+0That's not necessarily true. Americans have the best 400 sprinters in the world. Also the best basketball & football players. Canada has the best hockey players and the best curlers. Brazil has the best soccer players etc. It's doesn't mean everyone, but certainly can mean an increased amount from said country.
- notoneofus, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5As long as we're going on conjecture, I'd always heard the Israelis had the best snipers.
- charman2k6, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4Why don't you go and do a little research. Have you ever watched the sniper competitions they do with American and Canadian soldiers? Have you seen the training Canadian snipers go through? Put an American sniper against a Canadian sniper, and the Canuck will win.
- Fstop16, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2So for you it is sufficient to only compare American and Canadian snipers and whoever wins you regard as the best in the world? Give me a break.

- soupeh, on 03/31/2008, -3/+0Yeah, last century.
- etgryphon, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7I agree. The police shooter was, if i remember correctly, at about 75-85 yards. The revolver cylinder is about an inch or more in diameter. A good hi-power rifle is supposed to shoot AT LEAST 0.5 MOA so he had some room for play. Not a shot that just anyone can make and makes for great TV and a great outcome for a dangerous situation. Only an above average shot as long range shots go.
- barnett25, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4For those who don't know 1 MOA comes out to 1" at 100 yards, or .75" at 75 yards. 0.5 MOA is obviously half of that.
- zdislaw, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1I'll be the first to admit that I'm a dumbass, but...huh? I mean, I do know that 0.5 is half of 1.0, but wtf is MAO?
- barnett25, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3MOA is Minute of Arc. It is just a fine measurement of degrees (as in minutes, seconds, etc.). This forms a triangle with the target being one side of the triangle. Therefore, as you increase the length of the triangle (keeping the same angle) the side if the triangle on the target increases in size. Or you can just read this...

- sovietninja, on 03/31/2008, -1/+12Ur the noob, deep impact is only good for shooting through walls. Definitely using iron lungs to stabilize the scope and stopping power to make sure it broke the gun.
- Sogui, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Too many noobs on Digg. You can stablize the scope all the same with or without iron lungs, iron lungs just extends that stability over a longer period of time. Stopping power increases damage, but deep impact would allow the bullet to travel through the gun like it did. After all, deep impact increases penetration of material by the bullet.

- jull1234, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1about a billion years ago.
- mickstephenson, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Not when I was arrested, but I am in the UK
- repins, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Quite a while ago, they are cheaper, at least as effective and a single officer can carry more of them than metal handcuffs.
- sovietninja, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3When they found out that people on speed were really skinny and could slip out of handcuffs, and also when they ran out of handcuffs for all the drunk people at UCSB on Halloween, which was the first time i saw them used in real life.
- fuhcough, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2since the last round of budget cuts.
- itsthebrod, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1They don't. SWAT teams usually use them because they can carry a bunch of zip ties and handcuff multiple people at once.
- tuflehundon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2True SWAT guys, who are mostly former military, started using them years ago because you can carry so many of them. The military has been using them for years, I carried them in the Gulf War and in Somalia. So many military guys that turned Cop prefered them because they are faster and one guy can carry 30 or 40 of them.
- jull1234, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1about a billion years ago.
- HalfGiraffe, on 03/31/2008, -2/+7I dunno, the cowboys used to do this with a six-gun fired from the hip while jumping off their horse after drinking a bottle of red-eye and waving to the dancers at the local saloon.
- fuhcough, on 03/31/2008, -0/+7buried for calling them dancers. they clearly were dirty whores.
- buhbyebot, on 03/31/2008, -2/+5Didn't anyone else think, "I wonder if he installs Satellite on the side"?
- Raphyy, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5If the man himself admitted that it was great shot, who am I to say it wasn't.
- radarbeam, on 03/31/2008, -8/+2Cool but how far away the sniper really was? 50 yards, 100 yards ...not more than that. I don't want to sound cocky but I can put 5 shots within a nickel sized hole at 100 yards.
- usingpond, on 03/31/2008, -1/+8Thank you, Internet tough guy!
- tuflehundon, on 03/31/2008, -2/+1The shot was taken from about 125 meters. You may be able to put 5 shots into a nickel sized hole @ 100 yards on a stationary target, but try to hit one that is moving. I bet you will miss. BTW you do sound cocky, I am a former Marine Corps Sniper, I have hit targets @ 1300 meters, and this would have been a difficult shot that only trained sniper could have made.
- etgryphon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1I'm going to call BS...How do you know it was 125m? Remember watching this on the TV and them saying like 75-85 yards. This guy was pretty stationary he wasn't walking. I agree that the police shooter was a good shot to attempt it and that is no small feet. I still declare it and above average shot for a long range shot. And you hit targets at 1300 meter what rounds and setup did you have?
- buhbyebot, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4Should have shot him in the nuts.
- usingpond, on 03/31/2008, -0/+13ahah Wow. That sniper looks and talks exactly like a sniper would. He looks like a combination of Solid Snake and Lou Reed.
- diggerpleez, on 03/31/2008, -5/+2"Sniper Shot of Century"
This is technically accurate since they didn't actually specify *this* century.- bicyclethief, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6epic lame

- Samurai77, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3MEH, I have seen better shots, I used to work with Marine Scout/Snipers,I went to the range at NIGHT with them once and they could hit cyalume light sticks at 300+ Meters, the ones about the size of your index finger without night vision scopes, just the normal scope.
- tuflehundon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2As a former Marine Sniper, we used to train to hit Chem Lights at 500 meters. The M82A1 (.50 Cal sniper rifle) we would trai to hit targets at over 1500 meters.

- Enjoiz, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2whats the distance between the sniper and the guy?
- copperhead, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1If I recall correctly, when this originally aired on TV, they were talking about the special bullet they used. It was a highly compressed powder that was designed to disintegrate when it hit a solid object to prevent dangerous ricochets. I'm almost certain this was the story where they used that bullet.
- bendu, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1odd, they don't mention that the bullet from the sniper is made from compressed material. the bullet literally became dust after hitting the pistol. According to the TV show I originally saw this on.
- columbusgeek, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1hey cool that was in Columbus Ohio. I know that intersection.
