- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -6/+215I'm thinking if you are the type to run a red light that a sign isn't going to stop you.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -8/+159This is like putting a sign reading, "Please do not rob" in a bank.
- Billiam627, on 10/10/2007, -7/+95We have those signs at literally every stop sign in Albany. I think it has less to do with people running the red lights, and more to do with the ***** who slooooooooooowly creep into the intersection until they are essentially through it by the time it turns green.
- Achaean, on 10/10/2007, -4/+67*in a new york accent* "hey, i'm drivin' here!"
- hotrod1, on 10/10/2007, -6/+61If only they had a sign that said "***** stay off the road", traffic would be eliminated.
- colin409, on 10/10/2007, -6/+46We have those signs around here. I always find them laughable.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+40Yeah, they need barricades that pop up and clothesline cars that run red lights. That'll teach em.
I'm not being sarcastic. - NoOneButMe, on 10/10/2007, -6/+41Those signs aren't only in NY.
- ttfadia, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34Keep us posted!
- byrdgang, on 10/10/2007, -9/+38If you need to be told to wait for the light to turn green, you shouldn't even be on the road.
- BlueScreenOD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27These signs have nothing to do with being impatient. It's to alert the driver that the light's not broken, but oncoming traffic has the green light first -- usually because of a left hand turn signal.
- consoneo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26***** don't read signs..
- das7282, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26http://www.funnyhub.com/pictures/img/do-not-pass-s ...
We have these signs all over the upper portion of Michigan... I always found them laughable too. - epyon180, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22I think that had to be the most irrelevant comment I have ever heard about a story.
- Pake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20I always get a kick of out people to seem to think moving that whole 2 inches forward makes a world of difference while stopped.
- thetestament, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I think its usually used when there are green arrows made for turning, or if the other side gets to drive before your side, reminding people that they should wait until it actually turns for them. Either way, its kinda funny to see =D
- RxDaniel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Stop signs turn green in Albany?
- RxDaniel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19This must be the first time you read the comments on a digg story.
- fatlip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16ahh yes, that's likely located in queens. in nassau and suffolk you can make a right on red, in the boroughs, you cannot. theres one of those signs on little neck parkway going onto the NSP ;)
- DubbedOver, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16I have those exact signs a few blocks from my house as well in Syracuse, NY. Not sure what they are supposed to mean as their are also "no turn on red" signs.
It's near our upside down street light that the irish neighborhood kept breaking until green was on top. - consoneo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12That's badass lol... They kept breaking it until they put the green light on top? Hahaha..
- EdgarVerona, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I have a solution to the people you're talking about Billiam.
A steamroller. - Beamish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13If anyone cares - they are installed when the traffic signal operates a split phase. In other words: you normally expect north and south traffic to move together - "normal phasing". If the southbound moves exclusively, the northbound traffic expects to move and lowest common denominator driver might think the signal is broken, so we install the sign reinforce the obvious. In this location - each direction probably moves separately, three directions wait while one moves.
95% of traffic engineering is keeping stupid people from doing their normal stupid things. - DubbedOver, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipperary_Hill
- Lane, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12well they should put up a "Observe all posted signs and warnings" sign first
- EdgarVerona, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14If you need a sign to tell you to "Wait until it's green" to go, you probably can't read the sign anyways.
- xcecatalina, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12These signs are also used when one side of oncoming traffic turns green before the other and people just don't assume the light is broken and go anyway.
- EdgarVerona, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I think, for many of them, it may be more like "***** CAN'T read signs".
But I agree with the spirit of your post. - kingvik, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16The banks don't have all the extra money that the gov. does to pay for those signs.
- Mimorox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Just so you know, those signs mean that the other side will get a green light before you do, so don't just go when you see the people on the other side of the street going.
- Zzone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Come on people time is money!
- yingjai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10If that red light didn't turn green yet, you wouldn't have sat through 5 red/green lights.
- LordVance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Driving a stick I absolutely hate it when someone creeps right up my ass at a red light on a hill, forces me to hold my e-brake while I shift into gear to go (takes only a second, but sometimes they get so close I'm afraid of rolling back an inch into their bumper).
- pvliii, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11No, you can make a right on red in NY, except where it specifically says "NO RIGHT ON RED."
- RxDaniel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8That makes me proud to be Irish. Also I want to go break some street lights now till they put Irish green on top.
- geniusj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Except in the city :)
- K3ITHK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It is a delayed green and people go when the other light turns red, but before this one turns green.
- psion01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5We have similar signs in my area. They usually are used on intersections where traffic in the opposing direction goes before the side facing the sign. No impatience at all; just a warning to watch the light instead of other cars.
- UVWs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Here's another in NY too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarsura/177675580/
- nicolasavru, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Pretty sure those signs are for delayed greens. The red light stays on for both directions so that the intersection can be cleared of cars. Often drivers don't wait for the green light, thinking the light is broken.
- OutThisLife, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7These signs are all over in PA.
- sparf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4My favorite sign where I live is "Left turn must yield".
Eventually the entire driving manual will be put into sign form. - MrManiac, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9I think it's more for people out of state who will tend to turn right on red, which is illegal in New York and many other states.
- Whaines, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I wish a sign could fix the grammar problem you've got their (sic).
- Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Exactly. If you're on one side of the road, and see that opposing traffic is going, you may be apt to think (if you see no one turning of course) that the light on your side may be broken.
- soliloquiet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There is a very simple and reasonable purpose for them in NY at least.
They are placed at specific lights where the changing of the light is delayed. Ive lived at the intersection of a delayed light for 29 years and it keeps the cars at this dangerous intersection from turning and hitting pedestrians, so they delay the "green" so the people can have a chance to cross without getting hit. - elnerdo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It COULD just be another way of saying "No turn on red"
- geniusj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3In NJ it just says "Delayed Green"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Tipperary Hill seems like a dangerous place... The only way severely colorblind people drive with red lights is memorizing the order of the lights, and having upside down could spell out some major disaster...
- mt066, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I like the ones that say "Yield to pedestrians in crosswalk"....so you don't try to run over people that are already in the middle of the crosswalk.
