- AriaStar, on 11/08/2007, -5/+368I deal a lot with old textiles, and I can tell you it's rare to find a silk gown over 60 or 70 years old that doesn't crumble and shred when being held, and cotton starts to develop holes just as quickly. I own dozens of baby gowns, children's dresses, flapper dresses, and even an Edwardian wedding gown, and not one is in wearable condition or is fit for anything other than study. Even in museums flash cameras aren't allowed because the FLASH might damage the garments. I don't think anything exists over 500 years old or so. And there certainly are very few garments of any sort in the kind of condition as these hemp gowns. Those that are are usually in museums worth four or five figures.
The lace visible in the last pic is cluny lace, and I wonder if that's original (it may be) or was added later. The condition is just phenomenal. It's definitely hand-stitched.
Okay, enough textile talk. Sorry. - z0zin, on 11/04/2007, -2/+157But I thought cotton was the fabric of our lives?
- wcccrockaholic, on 11/01/2007, -6/+141The hemp plant used for textiles is different than the one used to get high... They are in the same family, but only one of them has a significant amount of THC.
- AriaStar, on 11/08/2007, -1/+90If you're not being sarcastic, I would tell you a lot more about textile history and how hemp was once nearly revered for its durability and comfort during times when you owned two, maybe three sets of clothing.
- SlipstreamLucas, on 11/01/2007, -2/+83It makes me furious that such amazing materials are banned simply because they would case "profit loss" to the major textile manufactures. Especially when they use the drug debate as a defense, when in reality clothing quality hemp comes from plants with a very low THC value, you'd have to smoke something along the lines of a joint the size of a power pole before you even got high.
not that there's anything wrong with being high. nothing at all :) i actually read this study once that proved that the effect of....*****. i lost it. oh well.
have a good night everyone, i gotta go make something to eat. - ifm1989, on 11/01/2007, -9/+85Now, I don't believe they ban pot because it's going to make clothing companies go out of business. However, now that I know this, I feel even stronger that marijuana should be legalized.
- Subterfug, on 10/31/2007, -3/+75Corporations actively work to confuse Hemp and Marijuana (DuPont has a history of this sort of activity), to tell people (and probably pay politicians to say) that you can get high off Hemp and in doing so, they keep it illegal. You can smoke a field of hemp and you'll be as sober as the Pope. It's a great resource that we can use instead of raping our other resources.
- Lane, on 11/02/2007, -3/+75come now who doesn't love insight. do tell!!
- Lane, on 11/02/2007, -2/+69sarcasm has no place in this thread, you are certainly much more knowledgeable then the article.
- joshreed104, on 11/01/2007, -4/+68And they're both illegal.
- Itazura, on 10/30/2007, -20/+82The word hemp isn't the word pot, but the word hemp is another word for cannibis and so is pot. They both refer to the same plant. I know you were trying to go for some english smartass comment, but maybe you should have looked it up first.
- darkyplasma, on 11/01/2007, -8/+58and this whole time i thought it had 1 use, getting people high(which i thought was bad) but after reading this, i see it has other great uses as well. everyone who thinks this should be legalized, should digg this to show the whole world what the truth is behind the banning of marijuana.
- insllvn, on 11/01/2007, -6/+52Why is it bad to get high? Is it bad to get drunk or buzzed (from nicotine) or to get a jolt from caffeine? What is wrong with people deliberately altering their brain chemistry? I am asking this question seriously as I have never understood why people think that. All sensation and emotion are nothing more than chemical reactions in the brain. Why don't I have the right to hack my chemical processes?
- Adamande, on 11/01/2007, -4/+50Do you not understand why a fabric that doesn't decay in 200 years is a threat to a global industry dependent on us throwing away stuff rapidly to consume new stuff?
Posts like yours is why I don't take people who call other people pot heads seriously. - AriaStar, on 10/31/2007, -0/+46Cotton is the fabric of our lives, but hemp is the fabric fiber that lasts several lifetimes.
- Catbert107, on 10/30/2007, -7/+47Aren't you special
- hoshizakistar, on 10/30/2007, -3/+39I wasn't trying to be a smartass. I probably could have said that way better than I had. it just seems like the submitter put pot in capital letters in the tittle to grab attention. usually when marijuana is used as a drug it's called pot and when it's cultivated for other purposes it's called hemp. of course you can say you're going to smoke hemp, but that sounds dumb. just as dumb as saying your clothes are made of pot.
- unorginalityftw, on 11/01/2007, -0/+32Cotton is plenty wonderful, hemp is just better.
- RaggTopp, on 10/29/2007, -1/+32lol no, you couldn't be more amazingly wrong.
- nreynolds, on 11/01/2007, -10/+38getting high isn't bad. trust me.... it's really really good.
- darnit, on 10/29/2007, -1/+28it was a good yarn ;)
- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -6/+33Hemp can solve world hunger, cure aids, about bring world peace too.
- SuperCow1127, on 11/02/2007, -0/+24Tell us more about these times. *Sits in front of the fire*
- mrsteveman1, on 10/30/2007, -1/+24You can't really smoke hemp, because hemp refers to a strain of the plant which is worthless for use as a drug, but great for fiber and other things.
Pot on the other hand is a slang term for the strains that can be used as a drug. - AriaStar, on 10/30/2007, -7/+30Same plant, different parts. There are also different species/varieties.
- redwolf, on 11/01/2007, -0/+22Having owned commercially made hemp jeans, I'll happily vouch for their durability and comfort.
I've also spun and knitted with hemp and have been impressed with its qualities. The first lot of raw fibre I spun was poor quality that looked like it may have been destined for pet rodent bedding, but the finished yarn was astoundingly soft and strong, most unexpected considering its unspun state. - Murdats, on 11/01/2007, -2/+24your business model is not my problem.
- VaporBro, on 11/01/2007, -1/+22No it isn't. Think about it. Cannabis Legalized = Cotton industry in trouble. Believe me: There are PLENTY of people with big business and big bank accounts who are making sure Cannabis stays illegal for the sake of keeping their investments alive. This is one reason why Marijuana is illegal.
- zambuka, on 10/30/2007, -0/+19Actually cotton isn't that great. It makes a nice soft fabric that last well when treated well and is relatively easy to harvest and process.
However it is a very inefficient crop to grow in terms of land and water use and the chemicals required to maintain a healthy crop are expensive both financially and environmentally. - Dokument, on 10/29/2007, -1/+19Actually mythbusters proved that wrong.
- insllvn, on 11/01/2007, -4/+22They do, or rather did. I think now it is mostly still illegal because of stigma and cowardice. However, in the old days a campaign to illegalize pot was lead by the pulp paper industry (guess what the Declaration of Independence was written on?) and the petrochemical industry, primarily Dupont, who sought to reduce competition against nylon and other synthetics. Also those pesky negro jazz musicians smoked the devil weed, so racism played a part as well.
- skeptic42, on 10/29/2007, -0/+18For the last time, hemp /= pot.
- AriaStar, on 11/01/2007, -0/+18It washes and wears well, but it weakens after several years and falls apart. Cotton isn't meant to last forever.
It's very simple to harvest and process, but don't forget that cotton plants also strip the land of minerals other plants need to grow, hence the surge in peanuts once upon a time. Peanuts can grow in the same soil right after cotton. - accessviolation, on 10/30/2007, -1/+19He's actually correct, in the only way that matters. Marijuana buds only come from budding female plants. Hemp can be grown with all male plants. The THC in male plants is so low you can't smoke it and get high.
- SquigglyP, on 11/01/2007, -4/+21WTF!? Have you people never seen Refer Madness!? It makes people go crazy and kill each other! That's why it's banned!
- theclashrocker, on 10/29/2007, -0/+16Hemp is not pot. You can't get high from smoking hemp, at all.
- sapient2003, on 10/30/2007, -1/+16The female plants contain more THC than the male counterparts.
- CTK14A, on 10/30/2007, -3/+18"The primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races." -Harry J. Anslinger, First U.S. Drug Tzar
It started as the stigmatization of certain ethnicities who had been gaining power, just as Prohibition was about blue-blood moral entrepreneurs stigmatizing the strengthening Irish population. - Subterfug, on 11/01/2007, -1/+16Maybe so, but that is not a reason to keep it illegal. If industries face problems like these, do you know what they need to do? INNOVATE! Hemp has a million uses.
- mad05963, on 10/30/2007, -0/+14actually the good stuff to smoke comes from the female plant, check you pot growing manual under gender or cloning.
- insllvn, on 11/01/2007, -1/+14The cultivation of either is illegal and if you will do some research you will find out why. Pot is illegal because it was easier for the industrial powers (DuPont mostly) to demonize. Hemp was tacked on quietly. Pot is a safer drug than alcohol. There is a lot of science to back that up. So why is it illegal? Follow the money.
- VaporBro, on 11/01/2007, -4/+17Getting high is wholesome, spiritual, and quite rewarding for me. However, you don't have to smoke it to be herbal friendly.
Welcome to the club. Glad to see your world just got bigger. :) - sadsadrobot, on 10/30/2007, -0/+13They should ban Alcohol then... oh they did... and it was epic fail....
- SPARTACVS, on 10/29/2007, -6/+19Human spell checkers like you make me sic.
- Dokument, on 10/30/2007, -6/+18you told him.
- yourmightyruler, on 10/29/2007, -1/+12Ganja will bring world peace too, but further our world hunger. No, just fast food will be gone. Benefit for all. Huzzah!
- insllvn, on 10/30/2007, -2/+13Then why are they both illegal? (Neither should be) Follow the money.
- DiggzDE, on 10/31/2007, -4/+15Pot is a street term for the "drug" marijuana. Hemp is not the drug marijuana. Let me repeat... Pot is not a direct word for the plant cannabis, it is a word used for the "drug" marijuana. The word "cannabis" is used by some to describe marijuana because that is the plant it comes from but it is only a word used to describe that and nothing more. To say that there is no difference between pot being used as a slang term for marijuana and pot being used as a slang term for hemp is ridiculously stupid.
- binnis, on 10/29/2007, -0/+9If you made a blog, I would read it. Stuff like what u just said is fascinating.
- unclemeat, on 10/29/2007, -0/+9HE'S RIGHT! Even looking at pictures of pot will give you cancer.
