Are you joking? - AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -137/+307I think you're a liar. Did you also give him a self addressed stamped envelope to mail you the film? The scenery also seems to change a bit too drastically for a homeless kids travels. Nice way to post your ***** attempt at photography and get people to look at it though.
- brianbb98, on 10/12/2007, -8/+126gotta love the photobucket!
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+100Colour film and black & white film. Both work with the same cameras.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+107Step 2: Profit off their work!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+110*****, if I'm homeless and someone gives me a camera? I'm pawning that ***** and using the money to buy food.
I call fake. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+91Sure do!
http://duggmirror.com/offbeat_news/I_gave_a_homeless_kid_a_camera/ - afx1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+81He really mastered those Photobucket Bandwidth shots.
- r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -15/+80I'm a photography student, and while I don't know a great deal about photography - I know enough to smell that something fishy's going on. It looks as though the guy is using this made-up story to get people to look at his work. There are a few different lenses/cameras used, and a few of the photos have a definate artistic decision to them (based on a good understanding of photography).
The black & white shoes for example with careful consideration for depth of field. This cannot be done easily with an instant camera.
Just saying... it reminds me of that person who wanted to convince people online that she travelled to chernobyl on her motorbike. I think this might smell of the same bs. - lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+70to all the people slagging off a guy they've never met, have a heart. It's true, I don't know if this homeless kid is real or not, but I'll give him and the guy that posted this on something awful the benefit of the doubt.
People are homeless for other reasons that just money concerns, and I've read about homeless people doing creative things like this before. Just because someone is homeless doesn't stop them being human. Maybe this guy with the camera has the creative urge, and decided it was well worth it to take these photos and get them developed. Maybe he got them developed twice, so he could keep a copy and send one to his benefactor.
Don't make assumptions about people you haven't met, the internet isn't a free ticket to be as cynical as humanly possible. I enjoyed the photography, it may not have been remarkable but if it was taken by a homeless guy then there is something very poignant about it. I definitely appreciated it. - onionizer, on 10/12/2007, -17/+70I don't want to offend anyone, but i'm not really sure if those pics does authentically come from the hands of a homeless kid, wich would be more likley interested in picturing friends or something, but not those artistic portrait of old buildings or urban corners in black and white. If those are legit, then the kid is very very talented for his age, but i still have a few doubts.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52If you give a homeless kid a camera he will shoot for a day. But if you teach him how to sell photos, he might not be homeless anymore.
- PixelVision, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53build a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day, set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -15/+62.Marked as lame for the source used to host the pictures? Think about the content you *****-for-brains. Too bad I can't mark you lame
- izzie2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46Would you have a sandwich,cup of coffee or a place for a shower?
No, but I have this camera. God bless. - MacGyver2210, on 10/12/2007, -39/+82"I think you're a liar. Did you also give him a self addressed stamped envelope to mail you the film? I think you're an *****. Did you think that comment up beforehand just to be insensitive, or was it a spur-of-the-moment decision to be a prick? You also seem to have no concept of what many homless peopele do most of the time, which is wander around looking for shelter or food or money, which would make most of these pictures par for the course. Nice way to post your ***** attempt at knowing more than the rest of us - I can't believe you were dugg up for your comment. - maledei, on 10/12/2007, -12/+53you know, you could have read the introduction of the post:
"There were about a hundred photos, mostly horribly under or over exposed pictures of people sitting around, but here are the more interesting ones." - rauz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+52I'm getting dugg down for that? There exists both colour film and black & white film - they both work with any film camera (i.e. not digital) but produce different results.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_camera
EDIT: nm, was dugg back up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39Just be glad they didn't include the pictures where the kid took pictures of his ass in the mirror for laughs.

- subneural, on 10/12/2007, -9/+37"a few months ago, I received a large envelope filled with photos in the mail from the kid, along with a brief letter describing what he had been doing since I last saw him."
Riiight. I'm sure a homeless kid is interested in spending what little cash he has on film developing and postage (as opposed to food, clothes, or smokes).
Colour me skeptical, but nice photos regardless. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+44I would say it's unlikely that the back story, however charming, is true. A homeless kid's going to spend all this money getting the film developed and still have the guy's address after years of sleeping on the streets? I dunno, I guess it's possible though. Homeless people can travel... not like they used to, since it's hard to hop trains and near impossible to hitchhike.
And the comment about black and white photos automatically seeming artistic is dead on. I convert some of my crappy digital camera pictures I upload to Flickr to b&w, and they get "Oh that's such wonderful contrasting" comments from people with emo icons... none of my color pictures get any comments like that, even when I upload the same picture in b&w and in color. - randomgeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29There are offensive remarks on digg?
...
What are you, new? - savingthecity, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32Just because he's homeless doesn't mean he's absolutely broke and never leaves his box. I could easily find places that look like that around my city on a bicycle... as for "switching back and forth from b&w to color", is it inconceivable the pictures were posted out of order?
I think it's a cool idea, and I don't doubt it's authenticity. Homeless people aren't incapable retards. There's no reason a kid living on the street couldn't have taken these. - randomgeek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Not really. I mean, maybe if you live in a city. The rest of us call that "mosquito bait" and you'll be eaten alive if you ever decided to visit such a "really beautiful" place in real life.
- robman8023, on 10/12/2007, -12/+34I don't buy it either, call me skeptical.
- dokbeast7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23From Dilbert: Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will buy an ugly hat. Talk about fish to a starving man and you're a consultant.
- hudson99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23You're skeptical
- PhilH, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32It's not so much the black & white / colour that bothers me, but the varying dimensions of the images.
One would assume that this guy either developed and printed the images, then scanned them, or scanned the negatives directly. Either way, they would all be of the same dimensions. But they aren't, and they vary quite a lot too. There's no reason for him to resize or crop them, leading me to the conclusion that they are not all from the same source.
I don't mean to sound cynical, but the story behind these images just doesn't hold up. It's just an artist putting a twist on his work to get people interested in it. - roomforpanic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22One roll color, one roll black & white. Come on, this isn't rocket surgery. It's ok to be skeptical, but find a decent reason.
- hudson99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Homeless" is not usually a permanent state of being. Just because the kid was homeless "a few years ago" doesn't mean he still is. Maybe he's in a better situation now, where he could buy more film, pay for developing, and send pictures back to the nice guy who gave him a camera...
- protiek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Secondly, the topic did not submit this to digg you idiot.
- delinka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@PhilH:
If I'd scanned them, I'd have cropped them for aesthetics before uploading. Even if they were someone else's photos. And especially if I'd asked them to take the photos for this very purpose. I don't think this is suspicious at all.
I don't know any photographers that could get perfectly framed images without cropping. - TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Pics or it didn't happen!
Oh, wait... - Jimgress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Interesting story whether true or not I don't care.
The photos aren't great at all, but it's still really interesting and worth the digg.
What's really annoying is the elitist ***** on here commenting and bitching about every little nuance that they don't agree with.
"It's not art"
"homeless people...boy I sure know better about everything than they know!"
"Fake, marked as lame"
God digg can sometimes be full of major *****. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@Teharvis
Actually, I looked up the definition............ You were way off. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"It's just like Kurt Cobain. Most people who like him, don't realize how little thought he put into his music.
That has to be the stupidest comment I've ever read.
You are an idiot. - dbhays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I have lived in San Luis Obispo for many years. Many of the pictures are of California State Route 166. For example the 76 station is near the Kern County line off of California State Route 166. About a quarter mile east of the 76 station is a dirt / badly paved road that takes you to the Carrizo Plain National Monument. This is where the pictographs were taken and of the old farm house. It's a beautiful and peaceful place.
- ptrcd003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Custom labs..? You realise you can get black and white film thats processed with C41, meaning the colour and black&white rolls are processed in the same chemicals. And even if you use the (now outdated) real black&white film, it only costs a dollar or two more to process.
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16read the story asswipe. The post said the actual photos came in the mail. By the way...those pictures are *****.
- fishmecha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9He was homeless and in San Luis Obispo a few years ago, and the letter he sent back with the pictures indicated he was living with someone and had a better life by the time he sent the photos.
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13read again...the kid DID develop the film.
"A few months ago, I received a large envelope filled with photos in the mail from the kid, along with a brief letter describing what he had been doing since I last saw him."
Not what I'm spending my money on if I'm homeless... - atlex2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8why are some black and white and some color?
- SEN5241, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11So you gave him a flash and a tripod too? Wonder how he managed to take those night time scenes.....
Fake - SpoonMachine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@GuitaristTom
Exactly! Because the only good bands are the ones who use irregular time signatures in every song. Who cares if it's impossible to tap your foot along to the beat of a Dream Theater song? Music isn't about making fun or enjoyable songs, it's about playing more technical stuff than all the other guys! That's why no one will ever take ***** bands like The Beatles seriously. - philz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Nowadays most people on digg call "fake" before they even see the picture..
- tealturtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Some of you seem to be forgetting that we are *all* one rent payment, mortgage payment, disaster, or fight with the homeowner away from being homeless.
Homeless does not mean living in a cardboard box for the rest of your life. It can mean that, but more often it means that you are temporarily in a bad situation. I know someone who owns a house now, but at one time lived under a bridge. It is possible that the kid was in a bad spot and got out of it. And yes, it's also possible that the story is bogus.
I think some of the shots are interesting, regardless of where they came from. - haveacigar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7congratulations, you are the first person i have ever blocked.
- birdland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5all these generalizing, ignorant comments about homeless people are ***** retarded. What the hell do you know?
- jlewicki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6yeah, most of them are mediocre, but that is not the point is it?
