- badqat, on 06/24/2009, -3/+60A horse is a horse, of course, of course, and no one can eat a horse of course, that is, of course, unless the horse is not in the EU.
- Lamnent, on 06/24/2009, -4/+46I just don't see the big deal. Sure, horses aren't bred quite like beef cattle, with the intent to be slaughtered and eaten, but if it's that persons livestock... IT'S A GOD DAMN FARM ANIMAL!!
- Zippo, on 06/24/2009, -0/+40"Hello, this is my pet horse and his name is Delicious"
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -5/+41Why is it OK to eat frogs but not horses?
- compulsive1, on 06/24/2009, -1/+34Just like cows and pigs and chickens.
- tgjerusalem, on 06/24/2009, -0/+26Horse meat is common in France, and in Quebec. As long as the horses are raised in appropriate conditions as livestock, there's no reason to treat them differently from cows or pigs. It's just a food taboo.
Pet horses aren't raised in appropriate livestock conditions, they're pumped full of veterinary drugs not appropriate for human consumption, though I'd like to know if they require similar promises not to eat your pets for other potential food animals like rabbits. - Cancerkitty, on 06/24/2009, -0/+24If I can eat Arbys then I should be able to eat a horse.
- shutaro, on 06/24/2009, -3/+24OM NOM NOM NOM!!!
- goobly, on 06/24/2009, -0/+20I had a horse steak in France a couple of years ago and it was ***** delicious. Don't knock it til you try it.
- AraleNorimaki, on 06/24/2009, -1/+19Get your piping hot horse burgers, horse fries, horse cakes and shakes. We got tongue, straight from the horse's mouth.
- sockpuppets, on 06/24/2009, -0/+12Why the long face?
- bluesz, on 06/24/2009, -1/+13holy *****, i did read it in his voice.
total *****... - AlexanderBlue, on 06/25/2009, -0/+10You're only saying that because you haven't had my wife's bald eagle soup. Or my slow-cooked polar bear rack of ribs.
- borez, on 06/24/2009, -2/+12Who the ***** came up with this bit of blindingly useful EU legislation?
- banski, on 06/25/2009, -0/+10Panda tastes the best
- blitzkriegpunk, on 06/24/2009, -1/+10Wow, what a loverly horse you have therOM NOM NOM NOM!!!
- JCEEZ, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9I had horse sashimi in Japan (pretty normal).
That is all. - RiotHeart, on 06/25/2009, -0/+9What did you think Horsey Sauce was?
- RealmDown, on 06/24/2009, -2/+10Hello, this is my pet horse and his name is "Emergency Lunch."
- Ninh, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7Just export them to Turkey, cash in on some farming subsidy that's doubtlessly attached to that and have them turned into sausage there. Then re-import the sausages (cash in on some farming subsidy) and sell it via the Internet.
- buzznjackal, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7I know not everyone on Digg has a Veterinary background so I put this plainly for you. There are "approved" drugs for use on animals used for human consumption and there are "un-approved" drugs for use in all other animals. They are different drugs. once drugs that are un-approved are used on an animal that animal is not fit for consumption. You guys need to read the article and do a little research before posting.
- goobly, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7Actually, I prefer my puppy braised.
- czaffa, on 06/25/2009, -1/+8Not like commercial beef isn't pumped full of hormones, antibiotics and other "vet drugs"...
- bdbr, on 06/25/2009, -1/+8Having owned both, I completely agree. Cows make more sense as livestock because they're not as flighty as horses, but there's nothing that makes them any more special for meat. The "vet drugs" bit is just an excuse. Horses aren't given any special drugs (at least ours weren't).
- Colecoman1982, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6The obvious solution here is to make sure you have your pet horse classified as a livestock rather than a pet. That way, if it ever thinks about stepping out of line, it knows that you can still make steak out of it...
- sshuit, on 06/25/2009, -2/+8Horse meat is like the most delicious tender steak you've ever had with no gristle and super flavourful.
All you Carnivores out there keep being awesome ! - billricardi, on 06/24/2009, -2/+8I can understand the reasoning behind this, as far as avoiding getting vet drugs into human food supplies. It only applies to 'pet' horses, so as long as this is defined properly, rural farmers in poor areas won't get screwed.
- doctechnical, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6"Wilbur! Put down the fork!"
- askantik, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7I never understood why it's weird to eat some animals and not others. I mean, humans don't usually eat carnivorous animals, but why is it so weird to eat a horse but not cows, pigs, or chickens? People in America think kangaroo is weird, too.
I personally don't want to eat any of them, and I'm puzzled as to why more people don't say, "I'll eat none" or "I'll eat all." You know, just for logic's sake... - doctechnical, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6Speaking of noms, don't they use horse meat in dog food? I know they used to. And I know when they did people who couldn't afford "real" meat would buy dog food and eat horse meat, no harm done.
- banski, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Dobbin would've wanted it this way. Dear, sweet Dobbin. [takes a bite] No more pain where you are now, boy
- ChiffX, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6I like your style.
- EzraDogPound, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Italy is like the number one horse meat producer in the world....
- YojanV, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5So, the metro reporting on a story from the Sun....
Yup, there's no way this could be anything other than 100% gospel. - RiotHeart, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Sorry, we only have Horse Coke
- Rudegar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4If I were you I would read the bloody article
most of us don't get into line to challenge the law
which forbid food which have been exposed to
medicine not legal for animals bred for slaughter
horses included
horse is perfectly legal to eat but
pet horses exposed to medicine which leftovers in the meat
could affect humans is not - Navicerts, on 06/25/2009, -2/+6Meh, i bet most of it is gone after cooking. In any case, shouldn't the law have been not to consume animals with x, y, and z chemicals injected into them (because it is harmful to your health) instead of "don't eat your horse"? I hate stupid laws.
- Numbski, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4So doc, which then is worse - not being legal to eat the horse, or not being legal to mate with the horse? :)
(I'm only targeting you because you seem to have some wit. I feel like abusing it...) - CedEx, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4Do you know that there are dog food tasters? It's an actual job that some poor dude has. All day he tastes dog food.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-514630/Ped ...
I think dog food has a higher protein to fat content than most human meals, which makes it more nutritious.
PS: Mad Max was eating dog food in Road Warrior. - diggcensors, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Its ok to eat pet humans, but not pet horses? huh.
- Navicerts, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Dolphins, cats, dogs, and horses really get off easy when it comes to being prey. I'm eating one the first chance i get.
- buzznjackal, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3There are strict laws concerning approved drugs for use on livestock. This is because some of the drugs can stay in the tissue of the animal and enter humans at the time of consumption. There are many drugs that are used in both livestock and pet animals. But there are different drugs that by law can be used on lifestock and pets. This is important to note, we are talking about different drugs that have been previously approved by the regulating agencies. When people eat pet animals they are thus bypassing these regulations and it is a direct threat to human populations. Drugs that have not been tested or approved for human consumption are now entering human diets. I don't understand how anyone would think that this law is a bad thing. Its only trying to protect people from eating meat that could be hazardous to their health.
- litkaj, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Because French people are tasty with an appropriate sauce.
- riskybeats, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3"The rules, which will come into force at the beginning of next month, is partly to stop vets' drugs from entering human diets. "
This is why they don't want you to (some people don't RTFA). And I didn't realize there were so many people on digg who enjoyed delicious horse meat. - BrynF, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Horse steaks taste great and are quite common all around Europe. Until recently I didn't even know that it was a taboo to eat horses in some parts of the world.
- ahac, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3It says:
Eating PET horses is being banned under new EU legislation...
... partly to stop vets' drugs from entering human diets.
You can still eat a horse that was not a pet. - Rudegar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3saw on lonely planet that peru's national disc
is deep-fried guinnipig
they are deep-fried whole and look like little
han solo's :) - Rudegar, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3read the damn article
it's not about laws vs. eating horses
but laws vs. eating pet animals having
been exposed to medicine
it's only like ½ a page not that long
most places selling and buying roadkill
or animals who died from illness is illegal too - doctechnical, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3So a doctor is on her rounds, and she goes to make a notation on a patient's chart. She reaches up to her ear and pulls down a thermometer. She looks at it and says "Some ***** has my pen!"
Seriously, the last time I saw a rectal thermometer was before the Kent State Students vs. Ohio National Guard frackus (guards won, 4-0). I told my sister that when he's old enough I'll tell him how doctor's used to take a kid's temperature, and he won't believe me. - idavidtang, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4What if the horse consented?
