- Alfdog, on 10/12/2007, -10/+61I thought this was semi-common knowledge, BTW hamburgers are ground up COWS!
- taylorhayward, on 10/12/2007, -19/+65In America, they walk the dog. In China, they wok the dog.
- shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+35human society > PETA
- GravyTrain6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24humane society > human society
- bwhite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Now who gets to fess up to their PETA activist girlfriend?
- shimrit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24The reason it's a big issue is because if this is true, then all those "faux fur" items are being sold under false pretences. It's like selling someone a veggie burger made out of meat or selling a Jew or a Muslim pork and telling them it's a cow.
- playerslight, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22That's why I spray painted my dog pink.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18You want a pink fur coat?
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Take a wild guess... let me give you a hint-- it's not shaved.
- Phantastica, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13No...the reason it's a big issue is because the people that are buying "fake" fur because they think it's a morally responsible choice are being conned.
The sad part is that if they're actually trying to pass off real fur as fake fur, that must mean that it's actually cheaper to skin an animal and use its fur than it is to create decent fake fur. - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Someone should look at Mario's track-record. He's been skinning and wearing tanukis since '88.
- krellor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13@software2
So they get tricked into breaching their morals. How would you feel about getting setup on a blind date with a cousin or long lost sibling you didn't know about. lets say you ended up in bed. In that example you get to bang a chick. Is that wrong? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12That depends... is said cousin hot?
- starfighter01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9When will people learn that you can't trust products from China? This reminds me of years ago when they discovered that gelatin coming from China was made from human fat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Don't even compare the two.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -17/+24Who cares as long as cutie animal dies to keep me warm I'm happy. Whether it be a dog, fox, baby seal it makes no difference to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOIyUHxKbMg - BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The way that they harvest these Raccoon Dogs is truly despicable and inhumane. They keep them in awful conditions and then skin them alive, leaving them to die a horrible death in a pile of their skinned brethren.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19I have a problem with the Anti-Fur crown: Fur is better for the environment. It is non-toxic and requires (far!) less embodied energy.
Please stop with the "fur is murder" crazyness and stick with the "no unnecessary rape of nature & no unnecessary cruelty".. NUANCE people NUANCE. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Just once I would like to see someone on Digg pull this joke off correctly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The raccoon dog or tanuki is a species of canid(related to wolves, foxes and regular dogs) specific to asia. There is a loophole in US import laws that allows the use of raccoon dog fur but there is good chance that this loophole will be closed to prevent the continued imports.
- Tsutsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8>>logicbomb
Humans are also in plentiful supply with no danger of going anywhere. - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Yeah, I've never understood how people rationalize this.
It's ok to kill and eat "traditional" animals, but wearing/eating less common animals is morally wrong?
Having a problem with advertising fake fur, yet using real fur makes sense, but I've also never understood why people would want to wear fake fur proudly either, they look identical and both display the same message...
Same goes for those eating a side of cow and are grossed out when there's a hair in their food... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"I thought this was semi-common knowledge"
You think it's common knowledge that something labeled "Fake Fur" is actually "Dog Fur from a Dog from China"
You're retarded. - arcele, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Lyph4
The Humane Society and PETA are not linked in any way if that's what you're insinuating. - BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yes, thank you. If anyone doesn't find that ***** sickening, they must be pretty close to being a sociopath.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@BabyWookie/dextroz:
Sweet Lord, that's the most horrible thing I have ever seen! I almost vomited from watching that, and now I am filled rage! If I had that ***** here now.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17PETA kills the majority of animals they "rescue" anyway, so what does it matter?
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@babywookie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_8Ko-9uKRs - H3LLSL337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I understand that some people don't have a problem with these animals being killed. I'm not solidly against it. That being said; what I am against is how they kill these animals. Most of these raccoon dogs are skinned alive because it takes too much effort to kill them first. This is why most activists fight this. Not because of the killing, albeit PETA or other fringe groups, but because of how these animals are killed. That's why there are protests against KFC, because of *how* they kill their birds, not that they are killing them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm not happy that something labeled as "fake fur" is, in fact, real animal parts.
The whole reason fake fur is around is because of the market that does not want to wear animal parts.
I'm not for fake fur because it's not what you wear, it's what you promote.
Like the pretentious Xeni from boingboing going on and on about her pictures on Flickr are fake fur, but she doesn't care that she's promoting the "look" of fur. As long as that look is "in" there will be people creating real furs, and more horribly, people creating real furs and calling them synthetic. - hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"Nowhere does it say the animal is harmed."
Tell that to the one I saw picked up by its tail and bashed against the ground on the news last night.
For the record: wearing any kind of fur...fake or not...is lame. Fur is to keep animals warm in the winter...not a fashion statement. - aussia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That's a very good question. I have a hat made of dog hair (hand spun and knit) and it was just shaved off the dog. It probably depends. If it's shaved there ought to be no more objection than wearing wool clothes.
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8There was this little video on YouTube, that's unfortunately has been removed. It showed how this dog fur is harvested at the Chinese fur farms. It was one of the most despicable, disturbing, anger-inducing things that I have ever seen. They skin the dogs alive, while standing on their heads, hitting them with clubs, smashing them agains the grounds, etc. Some of the dogs are still alive after they skin them and are left to die in a pile of their skinned bretheren, while yelping and writhing in agony.
I swear, if I ever ran into one of the people who do that *****, I don't know what the ***** I'd do to them. - SimianSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nothing gets my attention quicker than someone shouting "DOG HAIR"
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yeah, i also believe that human bodies should be recycled for maximum industrial pleasure - the skin makes for great bags i hear and the meat is supposed to be similar to chicken. I am sure someone can think of a way to skin and then grind up all those dead decaying bodies for protein rich, tasty and nutritious food/supplies. After all, the emobodied energy required should be even lower here.
animals are a lot smarter, responsive and absorbing of situations and circumstances than humans give them credit for. the feeling of pain and torture to them is very real. you can all the excuses you want for great taste/pleasure or whatever the ***** your 'instinct' wants. because that's what apparently most humans care for but deep inside, every human knows that it is wrong to kill and hurt anything. ***** what the bible/koran/etc. religion says because we also know that those are ***** stories written by a bunch of very smart politicians. if you continue to live on those instincts and accept the killing, there is no difference between the animal and the 'reasonable' human. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm not happy that something labeled as "fake fur" is, in fact, real animal parts.

Its not about PETA or any other group. Its not about hunting animals for food. Please read Babywookie comment above. Its an INHUMANE act upon a LIVE animal for fashion. There are alternatives to skinning animals alive. Its ridiculous and I don't believe those of you who say "I have no problem with fur". Have you seen it done? Even if you hunt you would probably get sick by seeing it.The act is something no human should do to a live animal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@starfighter:
Yeah, he probably doesn't believe in tipping either. ;) - shifty2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4wow, cant believe people blindly dugg my comment.
- Revan01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6... Fur dogs you?
?! - DoodlesMcPooh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I bet my fur coat that all the people complaining are wearing leather shoes.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10The only problem I might have with fur is if they waste the meat.
If the meat is used for food (and I've had dog in China...it was yummy) then the animal has been used wisely and ethically. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Why even release this information? They're not going to sell anymore of THOSE, now.
- seekandestroy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@software2, clearly they don't have a sense of humor. No point in trying to explain.
- ODSTKuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If it helps I am from Soviet Russia
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, just watch this video --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_8Ko-9uKRs
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No kidding. I would have less of an issue with it if the process was handled humanely. If you have a strong stomach, search "raccoon dog" on google and check out the third link (may have to hit google's cache for it).
It's pretty revolting. Long story short, they are beaten until mostly incapacitated (but conscious) and skinned alive. And yes, they do continue to stay conscious for some time even after they have been skinned. Horrific stuff. - hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://arctic.outstripia.com/
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4My leather shoes were made from the skin of cows that were put down quickly and efficiently, not from a beautiful, intelligent, social predatory animal that was kept in horrible conditions and then skinned alive and left to die a slow, horiffic death. Thank you very much.
