Huge rise in British UFO sightings
telegraph.co.uk — Clusters of up to 100 mysterious objects, bright white lights and strange, triangular shaped objects are just some of a huge surge in UFO sightings reported to the Ministry of Defence last year.

- MindTrigger, on 02/08/2008, -1/+9Have you tried to get good solid photography of an airplane at night? It's not as easy as you think, even if the thing is lit up. Most people have no clue how to take night (existing light) photos at all, let alone have a good enough camera for it. Our best shot at capturing anything is going to be with the new gen of HD camcorders that are out now. In a few years they will be cheap and common.
- fkr3, on 02/08/2008, -2/+11It's amazing how people can get crispy-clear photos of some girl with her thong showing on their camera phone and accetable video of her going up an escalator in all her glory, but whenever there's a UFO, alien or whatever.....

- NoNamesLeft, on 02/08/2008, -3/+226I actually once saw a ufo (unidentified flying object, not saying aliens or anything) in the North West of England in the middle of the day with 4 other people, which was also reported in the local papers. It was a bright triangle which moved sporadically and eventually shot of at ludicrous speed. I expect to be dugg down by for being some sort of tin foil hat person or loony but only saying what I saw and I wasn't alone and again, not saying it's aliens just something very unusual.

If there's a race out there advanced enough to reach us wtf would they bother for? What've we got to offer them if they're that advanced.... it'd be like the Pentagon using those super advanced remote control spy plane thingies to observe sheep, NASA using whatever they've made lately to observe cows, etcetera.- Stonedonkey, on 02/08/2008, -0/+11It depends on how rare life is in the galaxy, I reckon. /out of context. - Stonedonkey, on 02/08/2008, -0/+20Triangular objects and physically impossible trajectories are pretty common in UFO lore. You're not alone :)
- Archer007, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1The guy next to you is high, too.
- Vodka2389, on 02/08/2008, -1/+11It's very interesting how alleged UFO witnesses often describe very similar things. You gotta keep an open mind.
- Herostratos, on 02/08/2008, -3/+4It is also very interesting how they always describe aliens the way they are depicted in the B-movies and popular culture of the country they are from. For example, "German" aliens are taller and with occasional blue eyes and korean ones are reptilian or even robots(predictably enough).
Also it is interesting how there are always more UFO sightings after a movie about it has been shown.- jakobahman, on 02/08/2008, -1/+5Don't know why you are being dugg down. I've heard this as well.
The flying saucer for example... It originates from a sighting made by a pilot in 1947 where he explained the movement of the UFO as resembling a saucer skipping across water. Media was quick to name it "Flying saucer". Shortly after this media coverage, sightings of flying saucers increased alot in the US(but not anywhere else... strange.) To me, anyone that has seen a "flying saucer" is more likely to be delusional, lying or crazy than other types of sightings.
PS. I want to believe, I just think a healthy dose of skepticism is important when dealing with these things.- erkokite, on 02/08/2008, -1/+1Often times UFO's are cigar shaped, top shaped, orbs, or triangles.
- jakobahman, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1Yes. Thats not my point.

- cococooky, on 02/08/2008, -0/+16I also saw a UFO one night. A year ago while a friend and I were star gazing with my telescope at 3AM.
The object appeared from the SSE, traveled directly over us in an arc, and headed off in a NNE direction. It was shaped like an isosceles triangle ( http://www.math.washington.edu/~greenber/tri.gif ), extremely massive, completely quiet and appeared to be at a very high altitude. There were lights underneath and some were flashing. It took about 10 seconds to go from horizon to horizon - at the time we thought the speed was phenomenal.
Put these coordinates into Google Earth if you want to know where we were at the time: 28°41'57.74"S 152°41'29.85"E- jmp478, on 02/08/2008, -4/+17Thank you for the visualization.
I had no idea what an isosceles triangle looked like.- cococooky, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2I only pointed it out because isosceles triangles can also look like this http://library.thinkquest.org/20991/media/geo_isod ... I guess I could have said an acute isosceles triangle, but I didn't...

- Aharoni, on 02/08/2008, -4/+4The Stealth bomber on a not-so-stealthy flight?
I mean, before the Stealth bomber was officially introduced to the world it actually took credit for quite a lot of UFO sightings.- cococooky, on 02/08/2008, -2/+10If the stealth bomber was 500 meters to 1 KM long, and if it made no noise, I might think so too.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 02/09/2008, -0/+1> "If the stealth bomber was 500 meters to 1 KM long, and if it made no noise, I might think so too."
How were you able to determine its size? You left that part out... - cococooky, on 02/09/2008, -0/+2It was bigger than your fist held at arms length, and was at a very high altitude, it is hard to explain how high, but if it was lower, it would have disappeared a lot sooner from view because of the cliff face it passed over just 300 meters from where we were. My friend actually thought it was much larger than that - like 10KM!

- archivist, on 02/08/2008, -5/+2the B2 bomber does not travel that fast due to its propulsion system that does not use after-burners. for stealth purposes, it (theoretically) uses anti-gravity engines supplied by the darpa when they dissected et technology when they were building it.

Just a thought...- counterplex, on 02/08/2008, -1/+9Not sure why you're being dugg down - seems like a fair explanation.
- erkokite, on 02/08/2008, -0/+3Conventional aircraft- that is aircraft that rely on rocket/jet/scramjet/whatever forms of propulsion can't move in the same manner that these objects move at. We're talking accelerations of over 100 g's from hovering in mid air. Right angle turns, Mach numbers over 50, etc... All while making virtually no noise at all. Unless the Aurora has some sort of field propulsion system that also nullifies inertial effects of acceleration, this would be impossible.
- potisreallygood, on 02/08/2008, -0/+6While some lights in the night sky I have seen have caught my attention. They could probably be ruled out as being fighter jets having some fun. However, I saw something last summer while star gazing out in the country. Clear sky, so many stars that you would lose count when you got to 10. It was bright red, very high altitude. If I had to guess I would say in the 90,000ft range. I watched it for about 15 seconds then asked my friend if he saw it, he said yeah and we both pointed. We then followed it for about 40 seconds while it passed over from one end of the sky to the other. Then out of nowhere, it shot off. What a weird feeling it is to see something that you can't physically explain. All you can say to each other is "what the ***** was that?"

- barnett25, on 02/08/2008, -0/+4My Mom told me once about a UFO she saw with her parents when she was young. From her description it seems unlikely that it could have been secret aircraft (although this was in North Dakota). I was amazed that she could carry on a normal life, and not try to find out more about UFOs. It has to be difficult to have seen something that you can't understand (and know many people will think you are crazy if you tell them about it).
- erkokite, on 02/08/2008, -1/+3I have a friend who saw a similar object. It was at night and he described it as a spinning light with a triangle inside. It accelerated so quickly to such a high speed that it left a light trail (either an optical illusion due to quick motion, or a trail of charged gas). My guess is that it was a triangular craft that was surrounded by a plasma cloud used for drag reduction.

- MindTrigger, on 02/08/2008, -3/+13yeah, because no one would call "fake" at a nice no-quality cell phone video...
- Stonedonkey, on 02/08/2008, -0/+8They would be less likely to if multiple phones recorded the same phenomenon from different locations in the same time frame. One cell phone video, I'm as skeptical as the next skeptical guy. But visual corroboration? Now that's hot.
- MalDON, on 02/08/2008, -0/+4Have you seen the quality of most cellphone video? It's crap.
- MindTrigger, on 02/08/2008, -3/+13yeah, because no one would call "fake" at a nice no-quality cell phone video...

- eatasandwich, on 02/08/2008, -4/+7Every time the word "British" is used in a digg article. Every damn time.
- MindTrigger, on 02/08/2008, -1/+12It's ok bud, we get the 'American Fat Ass' thing all the time.
- Christbait, on 02/08/2008, -2/+3Except it's a fact that a majority of Americans are fat. Whereas the bad teeth thing just comes from watching too much Monty Python. So I suggest we just stick to making jokes about tea and crumpets.

- TobiasParker, on 02/08/2008, -2/+84How can people not get pics of this ***** in a world where some guy catches Britney Spears pussy in the 1/3rd of a second it takes for her to get out of her car.
- 6minuteabs, on 02/08/2008, -1/+54The aliens are thousands of years smarter than us. They know full well that if they flew around in their regular vagina shaped spacecraft it would be all over the web.
- MindTrigger, on 02/08/2008, -0/+13The problem is most people's cameras still suck, and the people holding them suck even more. If you don't have a nice DSLR and know how to use it, odds are you can't take a night photo, or a long zoom photo for *****. People don't even know simple low-light tricks like taking a bunch of the same picture to increase your odds of getting one that isn't blurry.
- iandigg, on 02/08/2008, -0/+0If someone had a good camera and knew how to use it then you'd likely be able to see in the picture that it was just a sattelite reflection or weather balloon or whatever and that's why all UFO photos are blurry I reckon. Otherwise there'd be no story...
- Mardala, on 02/08/2008, -0/+28UFO's are kind of random. Seeing Britney's cooch is not random.
- WaltDismal, on 02/08/2008, -0/+8But I'm sure, if they look inside it, they'll find a lot of alien things.
- Mardala, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1*lol*

- Vodka2389, on 02/08/2008, -1/+5I have a feeling that Britney's pussy is of higher importance to news networks than the discovery of extra terrestrials.
- JohnFlux, on 02/08/2008, -0/+3Dugg because it is
- caseymckinnon, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Screw celebrities, we need paparazzi for aliens!
- GeezerD, on 02/08/2008, -1/+13Couldn't they find a picture of something a little more exotic than a lenticular cloud?!
- kixxster, on 02/08/2008, -1/+3seconded
- ChayD, on 02/08/2008, -0/+2Ah, but it might be a UFO masquerading as a lenticular cloud.

- geneticlemon, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1Nah, if it's alien, it's theirs.
- Big_Poppa_K, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Yes, Jack is really hoping to get on them, if you know what I mean...

- GuacamoleSan, on 02/08/2008, -6/+1Omgz theyre invading run for the hills
- MindTrigger, on 02/08/2008, -2/+5There has been a huge rise in UFO's in all media lately. Mainstream news picking up sightings, which they never usually do. New TV shows. More discussion online because of more sightings. Do I smell... disclosure?? :P
- colto, on 02/08/2008, -4/+4I smell tin foil.

- ophello, on 02/08/2008, -2/+3really? it doesnt have that strong an odor to me...
- zoziw, on 02/08/2008, -2/+4I view this as a sign of the mainstream media slipping into tabloid news more than UFOs becoming a legitimate news item.
- colto, on 02/08/2008, -4/+4I smell tin foil.
- Calculon, on 02/08/2008, -2/+3Too bad this story is from last year... I guess we survived the invasion?

- MalDON, on 02/08/2008, -2/+2Why would aliens visit South Africa? If we don't then they sure have no reason to.
- DestroyFascism, on 02/08/2008, -1/+4Australia need more UFO's! I think I will be writhing to the federation about this...

- BingoPower, on 02/08/2008, -2/+2So true. It's like UFOs, Nessie, Sasquatch etc are only ever seen by photographer's with Parkinsons disease.
- GoatFounDeR, on 02/08/2008, -2/+2Out-of-focus areas is the natural habitat of Aliens and other mystical beasts
- rento, on 02/08/2008, -1/+2Yarp UFOs have grown in number and in size some of them have dared to fly in common local flights routes. Surely is only the army of some countries testing their new planes. Or is it??? muhahahahahah
- TechCF, on 02/08/2008, -2/+2The russians!
- nils, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1I don't like to repeat this digg meme, but: "Pictures or it didn't happen" has never been so appropriate.
- Stonekeeper, on 02/08/2008, -0/+5I once had a UFO fly over my car in North Wales. It was like a *really* low flying plane, but this was no more than 150ft off the ground and barely skimming the top of the trees. It had weird lights down the side, no flashing lights (as you'd imagine a plane to have), and there was no sound. None at all. We regularly have planes flying military exercises around here and i know for a fact this was different. Funnily enough, there's a "disbanded" military base about 7 miles from the sighting.
