"I'll rip a book in half" - mwosh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41This is real easy when you come from a town of 5000 people
- glamdr1ng, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33I learned this on Beakman's World back in 1993.

- down4twenty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29you bake it at very low heat for like 2 hours...
and if catches fire, pour gasoline on it - bmwboy2844, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33The question we truly need to answer:
Will you blend? - c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23If you are having trouble this way, put it in an oven for 2 hours at 200 degrees. Let it cool off and then do it. It will rip like aluminum foil.
- RUFiO006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Looked like a poon to me.
- letlifeinman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I heard this story: Apparently the 'tear a phone book in half' craze was very prevalent in the forties for guys to show off their strength and the phone companies were losing a lot of money. They hired the famous designer Raymond Lowey to solve their problem. His solution was to print a dotted line on the phone book cover with the message "to rip in half, tear along dotted line." This made it seem like anyone could do it and the prove your strengh craze died down. www.LetLifeIn.com

"I'll rip a book in half" - markp93, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This knowledge can one day save your life. Remember it well.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The video technique (pressing and pinching loose pages) becomes more difficult with larger books. Fortunately, one side of the book already has the pages closely bound and attached to each other - the spine. My uncle showed me the trick when I was a kid and it works with any phonebook I've tried, and even trade paperbacks and other paperbound books. Sick of an O'Reilly book?
1) Hold it flat, with the spine facing away from you, grip the spine with both hands.
2) Slam the spine on your knee (don't smash your fingers!), after one or two hits, the spine will break, starting your rip.
Once the rip is started, as the vid guy says, it's just a matter of pulling it apart (not so hard). With some practice you can get it into one motion, slam it down on your knee and rip it in half, yell like a ninja, etc. Very good trick to win free beers and impress drunk chicks. - spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Reminds me of a story David Bradley told me about MIT. Apparently it used to be popular for students to try to crash the MIT computer system in an effort to show your "1337 haxor skillz". To get people to not crash it, the sysadmin added a "crash" command so that anyone that wanted to crash the system could. Voila! No more fun!
- nothing7899, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8no one's forcing you to be here.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Heh. I wonder if this would still work with my giant NY metro phonebook. I'm really not sure if I could pinch it.
- Unremarkable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Look harder. But yeah -- sexy.
- haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12damn geeks gonna think they strong now haha....just joking boys
- Mylonite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow, was it really 1993? I'm too young to feel old...
- GeneralKickass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It would also be great to see you speak some quality English.
- grgg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the only reason i looked at this video was because i misread it as "how to rip a powerbook in half." i was disappointed, not only in the phonebook, but in my self.
- DarkPrince11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lol I can barely lift that book let along pinch it...:-P...
- dungbeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've done this before after watching an exhibition of strength. They broke bats, bent frying pans, ripped phone books, and bent 1 inch of steel. Although you do need the strength, a lot of it is knowing how to hold it right.
- headband, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6the binding is way easy to rip...once you break the glue it will rip
- PinkTacoDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Any of you guys every have the Powerteam come to your highschool? The were a bunch of steroid abusing motivational speakers. The guy would tear a phone book and for some reason that was suppose to make me a better person. This video has the same affect, except in this case my school did not lose some ridiculous amount of money. He obviously was a better person, when he would throw each end of the phone books into the basketball goals. I bet the janitor was pretty pissed.
- shepscrook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I just did this at work. My boss wasn't happy about it. Oh well, I still got a kick out of it!
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The easiest way to rip a phonebook in half is to open it up and rip it down the spine. Doesn't matter how big it is to do it this way.
- nemrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Already broke threw a bunch of 1 inch phone books - but having a little trouble with the 2-3 inch books.
Cool!!! - kayakto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3mereborn - yes, we saw the vid
- MadMastaZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is like the perfect way to get your girl into bed....show her how awesome science is.
- esotericguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hehe, thats what she said.....
- whatsupimphil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If only it was so hard to rip a cell phone in half. I've broken 3 razrs without trying.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, it's not about strength at all. The idea is to spread the pages apart in such a way that you're actually only ripping one page at a time. Anyone can do it.
- manmademark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Looks like a fat woman in a yellow 1 piece with her legs held high. :shudder: I'm not clickin play.
- InvertedDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damnit. every time this article is posted i feel less victorious about having the ability to rip a phone book in half. it wont be nearly as impressive next time i do it. thanks a lot webtechgeek.
- duckrank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A guy at my school can rip an apple in half. (The fruit, not the computer... nerd...) He just grabs both sides of it and pulls. Kinda crazy.
- NomenNescio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4die plz. ktnkxbye.

- GeneralKickass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Faster than a speeding bullet, More powerful than a locomotive, Able to rip phone books in half, It's a bird! It's a plane! ...
- BlakeFOTM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I watched the video, grabbed a phone book, and ripped it in half. Wow! Yes, it's easy; Yes, it's pretty pointless. But as I stood there, looking up at the phone book halves in my triumphant fists, I felt amazingly satisfied. :)
- MarcusJMcLean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6That's the wussy way to rip a phonebook, once we had a guy rip it from the binding....now that is how it's done
