- cmkennedy, on 11/10/2007, -12/+310For those who can't get to breitbart:
Hayden Panettiere has attempted to rescue a pod of dolphins from being killed by Japanese fishermen.
The actress joined five other surfers in trying to block the animals from being driven into a cove for an annual slaughter.
However, the protesters were prevented from saving the creatures after fishermen blocked them with boat propellers and hit them with a boathook.
Speaking about the event, she told Sky News: "It was really frightening. Some of us were hit by the boathook. But in the end all we really worried about was the dolphins.
"It was so incredibly sad. We were so close to them and they were sky hopping, jumping out of the water to see us.
"One little baby dolphin stuck his head out and kinda looked at me and the thought that it's no longer with us is really hard to take."
The Heroes star is a keen marine conservationist and supporter of the campaign to save the Japanese dolphins.
The TV star has now returned to her LA home to avoid being arrested by the Japanese authorities for trespassing. - inactive, on 11/09/2007, -128/+398Why not make a big deal about killing tunas, swordfish, or cod?
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -34/+258If Hayden Panettiere gets naked I promise to stop eating dolphins.
- chrystie69, on 11/14/2007, -40/+263unbelievably cruel and horrific thing :( Just one of many types of slaughters they do to animals though.
- m0nk, on 11/08/2007, -8/+185I think one of the big talking points of the "dolphin" campaigns is that these are mammals. They also display a level of intelligence that most fish don't. Just what I've seen elsewhere, though
- dracostimpy, on 11/07/2007, -51/+184Because dolphins are cute and therefore much easier to anthropomorphize than other sea creatures. They're the dogs of the sea, whereas tuna or cod is more like pork and chicken. I'd like to see Hayden weeping outside a hog farm sometime, but I won't hold my breath. That said, I think I have just the thing to cheer her up... it looks just like a dolphin's bottlenose, only with a lot less teeth.
- kaidovak, on 11/08/2007, -68/+197As long as they're eaten and the meat isn't wasted, i fail to see how this is different than butchering cows or pigs.
- keanon, on 11/07/2007, -53/+181Disgusting and pointless. It makes me so sad that THIS is what human beings do with their "more highly evolved" lives.
- rudy23, on 11/07/2007, -35/+153maybe you should see the state of some animals in american trade fairs.
- kidendless, on 11/07/2007, -10/+120if japan stopped doing crazy *****, they'd cease to exist
- Timetheos, on 11/07/2007, -15/+111Dirt in your own house isn't an excuse for the neighbors.
- Feener, on 11/07/2007, -26/+121If they see nothing wrong with it why try and do it so secretively?
- cherrick, on 11/07/2007, -2/+95Because they're not cute.
But seriously, it's because dolphins are more cognitively advanced than fish. Studies have been showing a degree of self-awareness that many other animals lack, and certainly fish don't possess by current understanding. The consequence of this is that they may suffer from this in a way akin to how a human would suffer. - NeoCortex, on 11/07/2007, -8/+91Man always thought he was the highest point of evolution on the Earth, because of such achievements as cities and wars, while all dolphins do is muck about in the sea.
Dolphins believed they were the more evolved species for precisely the same reasons. - merreborn, on 11/11/2007, -19/+99Why is it right for Americans to slaughter millions of cattle (a sacred animal to the Hindu) every year, but wrong for the Japanese to slaughter dolphins (which are apparently a sacred animal to Americans)?
If you want to keep eating beef, you don't really have a right to fault the Japanese for eating fish. - bitcloud, on 11/10/2007, -7/+87I live in australia...
JAPAN: get your ***** sorted out
USA: get your ***** sorted out...
incidentally, if anyone is aware of any breaches of ethics in australia, please let me know, because it's the 21st century and we all need to work together as a global community. - hockey, on 11/07/2007, -19/+99So are goats, cow's, pigs and lambs and we eat those animals.
- cryptomystic, on 11/07/2007, -74/+149An american telling the japanese to get thier ***** together?
how ironic. - bobbilljoe, on 11/07/2007, -33/+107They aren't fish though they're mammals. Just like us... :-(
- futility, on 11/11/2007, -29/+101Damn those Japanese for having a culture different from ours. Damn them! Grrrrr. Come on you Japanese, you need to start slaughtering cows by the bajillions. And don't worry, we know you don't have the vast open land to raise cows, that's why we're doing you the service of clearing out the rain forests so you too can buy the cattle raised there and be just like US.
- mstoneburner, on 11/07/2007, -14/+83If dolphins are so smart why didn't they just jump over the nets and escape?
- LetsGoHokies, on 11/07/2007, -19/+88I kinda have to agree. Do they get a pass because they are cute and smart? Pigs are smart, but they are also delicious.
- mickstephenson, on 11/07/2007, -1/+58It's quite simple really.
1. they are very intelligent and family orientated animals and have the capacity to realise there fate, Especially when they are waiting for hours smelling the blood of there relatives washing over them. Fish have only a basic brain and have no concept of family ties or capacity to reason a fishermans intentions.
2. As predators at the top of the food chain they evolved to be at very little risk of predation, and so reproduce more slowly and have a smaller total biomass than that of there prey. So they don't have the breeding capacity to be predated on. - m0nk, on 11/07/2007, -8/+65I think one of the big talking points of the "dolphin" campaigns is that these are mammals. They also display a level of intelligence that most fish don't. Just what I've seen elsewhere, though
- Irvulous, on 11/04/2007, -45/+101Yea, I don't get it. Why do the dolphin get special treatment?
- drachemorder, on 11/02/2007, -3/+56Not really. She can't be killed, remember?
- bightchee, on 11/07/2007, -15/+68If we can have at least one celebrity latch on to each and every single individual animal in the world we might save them yet.
- Eska, on 11/03/2007, -22/+74Wait, how is this different then livestock? Except that the dolphins were free at first. I fail to see a difference between that and what everyone else is doing. Someone care to explain the difference between killing dolphins and killing cows?
- hockey, on 11/07/2007, -17/+67American's only get mad when the animal being killed isn't a viable American food source. We eat those fish which is why no one cares. If American's ate dolphin like we eat those fish no one would care about this either.
It's kinda like the whole Mick Vick and the dog fighting thing. ***** fighting is just as illegal but roosters aren't as cute as puppies so while the Vick story got tons of interest a similar story about a busted ***** fighting ring that broke around the same time barely got a peep out of anyone. - LaueOfficer, on 11/04/2007, -12/+61The respected intelligence of the two animals you mentioned is very different between them.
- inactive, on 11/02/2007, -22/+71Props to Hayden. That took guts.
- GoingPostal, on 11/07/2007, -15/+63Don't get me wrong, but what is the difference between eating dolphins or any other animal. Is the dolphin endangered? Is it because dolphins are kind of cute and fairly intelligent? Pigs are supposed to be intelligent also. I'm not trying to be a jerk here. Most people eat animals.
- Araxen, on 11/02/2007, -10/+55N we aren't, we are trillions in debt. We don't have our ***** together.
- chompers66, on 11/09/2007, -12/+56I'm mixed because on one hand, I think it's silly that they're putting all this effort into saving dolphins, but on the other hand, I want to sleep with Hayden Panettiere.
- Ledwolf555, on 11/06/2007, -10/+54One thing about it, they aren't fish. I think they are mammals. And studies have shown they possess a higher order of intelligence than many other animals... Besides, didn't you read so long and thanks for all the fish.
- iknoritesrsly, on 11/04/2007, -1/+43it's the method of the killing. they let them bleed out--it's cruel.
- lukasmack, on 11/03/2007, -21/+62thats just sick
- Eska, on 11/04/2007, -14/+54How is this anymore disgusting or pointless than hunting/livestock? You fail at logic.
- slonrgjon, on 11/11/2007, -10/+50you can get sushi in Japan where the japanese will cut the fish a certain way to not hit their vital points so when they serve it to you, they fish is still alive while ur eating out of it. pretty impressive
- fLUx1337, on 11/06/2007, -16/+53I don't agree with it, but the only way you have a single right to say anything bad about this is if you are 100% vegetarian......
Otherwise, they have been doing this for hundreds if not thousands of years, just like America does with millions more animals every year (cows mainly), why would they stop? - Herolint, on 11/07/2007, -9/+45This isn't something that only happens in Japan. It happens in Mexico and other places as well. Mexican fisherman hate dolphins and just kill them to get them out of the way because they consider them pests.
Also, American farmers do the same thing. They kill wild cats, wolves, foxes, rock chucks, prairie dogs, various birds, etc. that get in the way of their industry. This isn't some heinous act. It is business as usual in nearly every country in the world that farms/hunts animals (or even grows crops).
If these stupid Americans want to save animals, they don't have to waste their time traveling to Japan and trespassing on private property there; they can do that right here at home. - MeMongo, on 11/02/2007, -2/+38We kinda sorta did that a couple of times already
- m0tbaillie, on 11/04/2007, -16/+50I really don't understand why this guy is getting dugg down. He's making a pretty valid point folks. This is why world at large ***** hates the US right now: because of our obnoxious foreign policy. We can't get our own ***** straight in the US, yet we're telling other people how to run their *****. What the *****?
But then again...those who can't do, teach. - JaredXM, on 11/04/2007, -31/+64Yes but shouldn't you clean up your own house before you talk about the dirt in your neighbors?
- Ash20, on 11/03/2007, -10/+43If you REALLY care about dolphins from an animal rights perspective, you should protect all sea creatures and all mammals the same way. How "evolved" or how "intelligent" they are is so subjective - at what point are you not evolved enough and therefore to deserve to die? Also, other sea creatures are "bred outside of captivity", so that's not an excuse either.
The hypocrisy is almost unbearable. Please either object to industries related to fish and meat entirely, or support them. You don't get to "pick and choose" morality based on convenience and conjecture. - oenoneablaze, on 11/04/2007, -0/+32uh, dolphins aren't fish. they're mammals.
- leonidas333, on 11/10/2007, -39/+71It is ***** disturbing the way they kill these poor animals. No point arguing and trying to get Japanese to change this practice. These are the people who refuse to acknowledge or apologized for their role in WWII and war crimes there-in. Most Japanese students know didly squat about this period of history. I don't mean they don't know it from our western perspective, I mean they seriously jsut don't no squat about this entire era, its like the world calender just skipped from 1939-1945 for most Japanese and thats the way the want to keep it.
Arrogant bastards.
Massive respect for that chick from Heroes though.I just thought she was a pretty face but she obviously has a deep soul.
P.S. if you want to see why she was crying view this http://youtube.com/watch?v=31yVpWTsThA (first minute is about whales then it moves to dolphins) - rudy23, on 11/07/2007, -3/+34from the title I first thought it was going to be that japanese chick with hiro. why couldnt they just mention her by name.
- Kn1ghtmare, on 11/03/2007, -30/+61It's not like they're just killing the dolphins for fun... I don't see how this different from killing horses, dogs, cats, cows, birds, or any other animal for food.
