- ColorBlind, on 11/28/2007, -3/+105This was a few blocks down from where I live. I've thought about doing the same thing many...many times.
- PATSCRU, on 11/28/2007, -5/+99OH GOD how i've wanted to shoot traffic cameras. I'm not a gun person, but if i ever went out to buy one, it'd be a long range sniper rifle for this very reason. Those things are orwellian cash cows for municipalities.
- LordSkywalker, on 11/28/2007, -11/+93Those ***** traffic cams are more dangerous than helpful from what I've seen. A few major intersections where I live have them and people either speed recklessly through the light to attempt to avoid the cam (not possible anyway) or slam on their brakes the instant it changes to yellow. I've seen many close calls thanks to these big brother nuisances.
- badassninja, on 11/28/2007, -9/+81This guy is my hero. Big Brother needs to go ***** it's self in the ass. As if cops weren't bad when it comes to judgment of when to get a ticket, there is no way a cam is going to have any judgment what so ever. They have to be one of the most directly repressive pieces of technology ever made.
- Dragular, on 11/28/2007, -0/+69Option 3: POTATO CANNON OF JUSTICE.
- 1town, on 11/28/2007, -2/+64$50 fine? Sooo worth it. *****, I'd go rambo on a traffic camera for much more than that.
- weeble, on 11/28/2007, -0/+61In the Netherlands, they take up another level... they bash them with baseball bats... or even better... burn the cameras down. I used to live in the Netherlands, and there was a redlight/speed camera near my house. It was usually in some state of destruction... exploded, burnt, painted, bashed beyond recognition... and no it wasn't me that did it.. honest..
- dagr8tim, on 11/28/2007, -0/+42I see people defending red light camera's. Here's some things to think about. This information is based on the setup in Columbus, Ohio. Your sitution may slightly vary.
- The camera's are owned by a private company, not the city.
- The owners of the camera get a cut of every ticket writen.
- That cut started out at like 75% of the ticket and goes down over time.
- When you are snapped, the image/info goes to like Denver, to the companies "processing" center before being sent to the city for review.
- There are no points on your license for getting a red light camera ticket. It's 1 point (moving violation) if you are pulled over and issued a ticket by a cop for running a red light.
- Your insurance company isn't notified (unlike if a cop pulls you over and gives you a ticket).
- In Columbus, there are no images of the driver, so who knows who was actually driving. The owner of the car gets the ticket.
- They claim the camera's are for safety. While T bone accidents have gone down at intersections with camera (and only intersections with camera's, not city wide). Rear end accidents have increased. Not to mention, a study by Ohio State showed that if both roads at the intersection are red for 1 second, it reduces the accident rate by 90%. If this was about safety, wouldn't you think a city would increase the timing that both ways stay red before installing more equipment?
For me, I think the damned things are unconstitutional because the private sector has not started doing law enforcement. Not to mention, they are a means of tracking people if they run the red light. On top of that, it is a pure cash grab for cities. They don't have to do anything except employ an officer to "review" the pictures and write tickets. - TheTaoOfBill, on 11/28/2007, -0/+42This man is a freedom fighter. A national hero! Get that man a medal!
- heartcoldfusion, on 11/28/2007, -0/+38Awesome! He could have gotten the job done just as easily (and way more stealthily) with a .22 but instead he used a .30-06. That's the American way!
- unusualbob, on 11/28/2007, -11/+47I think that red light cameras would be a good place to put ron paul posters, right in front of the lens.
- Error601, on 11/28/2007, -0/+33The classic: http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2.htm
- andrewcsayer, on 11/28/2007, -7/+40Now THIS is ragin' against the machine.
- gyrfalcon, on 11/28/2007, -1/+27Thankfully these cameras have been ruled unconstitutional in Minnesota.
- honus, on 11/28/2007, -1/+26Man's my hero. Those cameras are a sham.
- woohhaa, on 11/28/2007, -0/+22I would blame year of video game training and conditioning. When ever I see a security camera my first instinct is to shoot it.
- SleepingOrange, on 11/28/2007, -1/+22does this guy do requests?
- _Ty_, on 11/28/2007, -2/+22Dugg for his choice of 30-06. I'm suprised it took that many shots to take it out of service.
- FTLJohnson, on 11/28/2007, -5/+21Don't fire a ***** sniper rifle at a camera... jesus christ people... risking innocent lives over a speeding camera.
You have 2 very simple options.
1. BB Gun
2. Paintball Gun.
Both are a hell of a lot quieter than a 30-06. This guy was a moron.
Oh, if you have really good aim, rocks work too... but you're much more likely to get caught. - UberNick, on 11/28/2007, -9/+25Sounds like the old "if you're not doing anything illegal..." argument that openly embraces unwarranted surveillance and assumption of guilt. Faux news would be proud of you.
- itsradBrad, on 11/28/2007, -9/+24I'm a big gun enthusiast and I have to say this was a pretty stupid thing to do. I have a .30-06 deer rifle and I know I can shoot at least a mile before the bullet comes to rest.
I can visualize the bullet flying right through the camera arcing downward and going right into some defenseless and unknowing person's head coming to rest in their brain.
Not the best idea to shoot a high-powered rifle in populated areas.
What a jackass. - active1x0, on 11/28/2007, -0/+15If he is convicted of felony vandalism, he will never (legally) own any firearm ever again. Hardly worth it.
- FTLJohnson, on 11/28/2007, -4/+18Noah, thanks for the explanation of the obvious. So what should we put in the road next to trigger the bad driving of the plethora of idiots out there... Strobe lights? How about we make cross walk zones on 6 lane highways...
Those people slam on their breaks because they are trying to be 'good' drivers... and not run red lights.
These stupid ass cameras SHOULD have been made so that you CAN run the red light, but only if the light from the perpendicular direction is not green.... (giving everyone an average 2 second window to actually run the red light)
Accidents don't occur when people go through a yellow that JUST turned red, they occur when morons and drunks fly though a red light that has been on so long it has turned a pale shade of purple. - ereg, on 11/28/2007, -0/+14my only real problem is, the title ask if we hate red lights, while the article talks of red light cameras.
- hillie, on 11/28/2007, -3/+17Bravo!!!!!!!!!!! I commend this man. For so long I've wondered why the ***** the PEOPLE of this United States, the PEOPLE who are supposed to be the ones who run the country, don't make a coordinated effort to shoot down every red light camera and continue doing so in a clandestine fashion until the government decides to not keep wasting money on replacing them.
This country has grown into a nation of mindless drones who do not question anything the government does.
It's like the "don't tase me bro" guy.. Those 4 cops were wrong, and there was an entire auditorium that didn't do JACK ***** to help them.
Those 4 cops would have easily been overtaken by the people and I seriously doubt the cops would arrest everyone in the auditorium.
The phrase "if enough people stand up against it, it will change" comes up but that's the sad thing. It's never going to happen because most people simply just bitch and moan and don't take any action. - BlacklabelSAR, on 11/28/2007, -0/+12I love the implications of this story. It's so much bigger than just the obvious conflict of interest with private companies benefitting from the red light camera ticket revenue.
People are fed up with all facets of corrupt government, and people have guns. This is a symptom of the cultural revolution that is gaining momentum. It's been a ***** long time coming. - jcaino, on 11/28/2007, -1/+13Once word: patriot.
- theblooms, on 11/28/2007, -0/+12Yeah, but he will ALSO lose his $500 (minimum) rifle. So that massively sucks ass.
- FTLJohnson, on 11/28/2007, -3/+14Yeah, because THOSE aren't loud and obvious...
Why not just use a rocket launcher? That's about the same size as a typical potato cannon...
.... and if you are going to go with the Mythbusters chicken gun... well if we are going to get to THAT scale.. well then why not let's just use a TANK. Perhaps a Howitzer?
I shot a speed camera with a howitzer, and the camera survived.. They found it 30 miles away, in tact... and amazingly IT WAS STILL WORKING.
(there, spread that around, and maybe we'll get to see them testing this by firing a howitzer at a speed camera) - kakwakas, on 11/28/2007, -0/+10If it's worth doing, it's damn well worth OVER-doing!
- crackhammer, on 11/28/2007, -0/+10I agree with your "cash grab" take on speeding tickets (as do most of the readers here) recently I found a comment on a password protected Compton CA police site 1087comptonpd.com (the userid and password are easily retrieved from googling 1087comptonpd.com) . Though old (2006) it still paints a startling picture today.
QUOTE: For those of us who like to drive fast..... California Highway Patrol will launch a 30-day speeding ticket frenzy in Orange County and Los Angles County starting January 25, 2006. The state estimates that 22 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 3 million will go to pay California Highway Patrol officer overtime. There will be 90 California Highway Patrol officers on duty at all times patrolling the 7 freeways. They are the following: 73, 55, 105, 110, 133, 241, 57, 5, 405,605 and 710 freeways.
They have issued 50 brand new unmarked Crown Victoria cruisers and they are bringing all their part timers on full time. If you live or work in Orange County or Los Angles County you must take one of their freeways. It's up to you how fast you are doing when they do. This is a test by the CHP to raise the extra funds for the State of California. The wealthy folks of Orange County and Los Angles County can afford this new tax. The California State Legislators dreamed up this law to help close the budget gap or something like that. I was told KICU-FM confirmed all of this. So be safe and don't forget speeding tickets are on you. - logicalnoise, on 11/28/2007, -2/+11no ***** sherlock, I'm referring to when RATM lost the mtv award to fred durst and in protest the bassist of RATM did a walkabout on a on stage sculpture. Where fred durst uttered one of the most doucebaggery lines ever "Now THAT is raging against the machine"

...Okay so I'm Canadian, but if I was in the US, I'd totally be buying some guns around now.. something long range, maybe. - drachemorder, on 11/28/2007, -3/+12In other words, it isn't capable of making exceptions when exceptions are justified. Yeah, that's really a good thing right there.
- JCougar, on 11/28/2007, -1/+10 I second that. The man reminds of Larry David; he does the things I've always thought. This guy needs to take care of the one at North Peters as well.
- Herostratus, on 11/28/2007, -1/+9The guy wasnt mad at the red light he was mad at the cameras. Hell I'm mad at the cameras. This is some serious ***** that people are accepting as normal. Welcome to 1984! Big Brother IS (emphasize IS 60 pt bold underline) watching you. This is the global surveilance police state that all the "tin foil hat wearing nut jobs" have been warning us about for decades. This isn't the end. It is only the beginning. Now with their flying drones equipped with tasers and their Vehicle Mounted Active Denial Systems and the coming disarming of the populace via negation of the second amendment we will soon find ourselves in a nightmarish sci-fi style totalitarian technocracy from which there will be no escape and under which there will be no freedom.
Remember "All animals are created equal, but some are more equal then others." -George Orwell, Animal Farm - dagr8tim, on 11/28/2007, -0/+8I have to admit, with Columbus, Oh having afew, I have thought of similar things. For me, I think paint balls would be more effective & less damaging (to where I could be charged for a crime).
- jmgoody311, on 11/28/2007, -8/+16I think he got a little too fired up about the whole thing...
- shakin, on 11/28/2007, -0/+8You may be a great driver, but what about the jerk tailgating you? My wife had to stop quickly at a yellow light (not screeching the tires, but a quick stop) and a truck hit her van from behind hard enough to push her into the intersection. If my wife had continued through the intersection she would not have been through it before the light turned red. She obeyed the law and was in an accident because the truck driver is an idiot, but it was still an accident she could have avoided by not stopping for the light. It was perfectly safe to proceed through the intersection, but the law and the red light cams don't take into account what's safe. Getting a ticket is better than getting into an accident, but it doesn't make any sense to restrict drivers to those two options.
- AbsurdParadox, on 11/28/2007, -2/+9Can someone explain to me how tickets through camera systems are legal? They don't identify the driver, only the vehicle.
- RedHerringHack, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8Has your computer ever crashed? Done anything incorrect or inaccurately? How do you know that the camera or it's timers are accurate? Can you confront and cross examine a piece of hardware? Can it swear in court to the accuracy of it's "evidence"? no. Unconstitutional.
This man is a freedom fighter. - inactive, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7What kind of felony has a $50 fine?
- LeeSoong, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7No - the true weapon of choice: Crowbar.
- kakwakas, on 11/28/2007, -0/+7Keep it up, Brits! :D
- MiDri, on 11/28/2007, -1/+8$500 minimum? You can get a 30-06 for like $100 used, from a pawnshop in good condition -- maybe cheaper if you're good at bartering and if you're lucky enough to live in a state like Oklahoma, you don't even have to get a license for it!
- booyaman1, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7you mean Zak de La Rocha(sp)? he referred to RATM, not limp bizdik.
- colifis, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6Yep, just ask the girl here in Minnesota who had a .50 cal muzzled loaded bullet blast through her bedroom wall and enter her pillow an hour after getting out of bed. Happened this week.
- Pilot85, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6wow, that's a lot of torched cameras.
- TheMidnight, on 11/28/2007, -0/+6Rage, rage against the dying of the red light.
- colifis, on 11/28/2007, -1/+7Here in Minneapolis the courts made the city remove their red light cameras. The argument was that it couldn't be proved that the registered car owner was behind the wheel when the vehicle ran the red light. People who already paid their fines got screwed and couldn't get refunds though.
