- autumnxnyts, on 10/11/2007, -1/+249And yet here we are again in this great big huge world of ours finding a way to go out of our way to hurt the helpful. The poor guy did what any decent citizen would do by attempting to assist in an awful situation. Granted, I am not a huge fan of guns, but my goodness, this lady was screaming and it's not like he went there looking to specifically shoot someone! Sad Sad Sad for the employer to look at this the way they did.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -5/+155I think a lot of gun owners are about to call and ask about moving in.

http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/FL-Jacksonville-Oaks-At-Mill-Creek.html - SecondGuesser, on 10/11/2007, -16/+152If firearm ownership were banned, this woman would have died. Surely no one would have intervened without protection. This reminds me of the story about about the carjacker who got killed -- all the Diggers were crying about the carjacker, saying that if guns were banned he'd still be alive.
Who cares if the perpetrator lives? I care about the innocent victim living. - SnuKs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+116Im sure his supervisors would regret firing him the next time THEY get robbed at gun point.
- RyeBrye, on 10/11/2007, -2/+112The PR Person stated:
"Colin's failure to immediately report this incident ... could have serious ramifications to the property, its associates and residents."
I dunno... maybe being a ***** slum where residents get shot could have serious ramifications to the property, its associates and residents. - jeffiek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+87"He promises he won't shy away from aiding others in need."
Good for him. I wish him well. As for that asshat boss - some things are unprintable, even on Digg. - opethlike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+83"Colin demonstrated extremely poor judgment in responding to this situation," the complaint said. "Colin's failure to immediately report this incident ... could have serious ramifications to the property, its associates and residents."
Umm, he called the police. I doubt the landlord was going to come flying in to save the day. - crawfishsoul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+80Except in this case the gun was in his home, not his desk drawer.
"Bruley said he was dozing off in his apartment when he heard Lee's screams. He said he then grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun he uses for protection and hunting."
So, apparently, by living at the apartment complex that you work at, you immediately become a 24/7/365 employee. - bulkhater, on 10/11/2007, -1/+74From the article:
//"If it wasn't for him ... she could have lost her leg or died," said Jenkins, 19. "He put his life in jeopardy for someone else."
//
//Bruley said he is considering contacting a lawyer about his dismissal, but will first look for another job and possibly
// another home. He promises he won't shy away from aiding others in need.
//
//"If I'd lose my job again for helping some girl's life ... I'd do it over and over," Bruley said.
In other words, he's a better human being than anyone else who works for the development. I bet he would have gotten chewed out for waking his supervisor if he'd reported it at the time it happened. - phillyquattro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+58It's not a slum lord or anything of that nature. It's actually a very large development company called Village Green Companies and the properties are pretty nice looking, at least on the site. Their slogan is even "We Care". Apparently they don't care about their employees doing the right thing though. Go to their site and send them a message letting them know how you feel about their decision. Corporations like this need to be put in their place.

So, let me get this straight.
You want to kill someone so you say, "Oh shucks, guns are illegal, I guess I cant do that..." Or are you going to go down to the corner, talk to the local thug, buy a gun, and go shoot someone.
Outlawing guns only takes guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. The criminals keep their guns and now they have no fear of their victims having guns. - Jenovaside, on 10/11/2007, -2/+50Anyone know how to get in touch with this guys boss.I think Digg might be able to get enough people to possibly shame the boss into giving his job back, even if that fails I would love to give her hell. Getting fired for possibly saving someones life should not go unchallenged on any front.

http://www.villagegreen.com/mailform/index.cfm/fuseaction/generalContactForm/contentID/65/navID/65/communityID/.htm - Xeth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+44I'm kind of neutral on the gun ownership issue, but how would it have applied in any way in this case? The guy simply took his gun as a precaution. I doubt he would have stood idly by if he didn't own a gun.
- GirthAgain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+41I think some people are just douchebags who look for a reason to fire others. Stupid.
- usrlocalbin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38@flooppyparty:
Totally agree with what you are saying man.
But he lived there so he was at home when he got his shotgun.
And he wasn't even on the clock, so he was there as a normal civilian, not an employee.
I'm sure since he lives there that could add some extra red tape to the situation, but he really should have been praised by the apartment company. I bet every tenant in there hates the management and will stand by that dudes side. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+39ya that would be ironic justice
they get held up and shot and he doesnt help them cause he could lose his job hehe
sorry pieces of crap
this is how this country honors its heros
fires them in this case, lets alot of them die, leaves lots of them in harms way...
this country is completely utterly ape ***** insane - Stradenko, on 10/11/2007, -5/+37If marijuana were banned, it's possible nobody would get high in the first place...
- Rikushix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32This is disgraceful.
- glasnostic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27He was in his apartment where he legally held the gun. From what I understand, that was not against company policy.
He was a leasing agent, so his workplace would consist of the leasing office. If it extended to his house or the company grounds, then one could say that he could be fired for being asleep at home, or drunk while walking to his mailbox.
Sorry dude, you really should not be defending his ***** boss for misreading company policy. - WoodFlea, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29"being told that brandishing the weapon was a workplace violation"
At 2 am in the morning its his home not his workplace. Nowhere did I read he carried it into the office.
SUE SUE SUE - boblmartens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Sure, if he was currently on-duty and in-uniform and it wasn't 2am ... I might start thinking about possibly believing the company has a case. However, the guy was acting as a citizen who was trying to protect himself and the person who was shot. I would have grabbed a gun if I had one, someone was just shot!
- usrlocalbin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24I would have liked to see the landlord do the same thing he did.
I really ***** doubt it would have happened.
Good for this guy!! I read about stuff like this (the good deed he did, not the douche bag people he worked for) and it really makes me feel good that there is still some people out there who give a *****.
Kudos man!! - bulkhater, on 10/11/2007, -7/+30Good Lord there are a lot of Candy Assed morons on Digg. Why on God's Name were they wringing their hands over a carjacker who was gunned down while trying to steal a car?
secondguesser, I'm sorry, and I should have hunted for the story before I shot off my big mouth.
I have NO empathy for a criminal who dies in the act. - Tobark, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Andrea Roebker, the company's director of public relations, said "We're not in a position to discuss any employment issues outside of [with] the employee.

I remember the thread as well.
You should try using the 'search' function before revealing your doucebaggery.
eat it. - coolcutter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21This kind of story is exactly why a lot of places had to institute what they call "good samaritan" laws. For years if you stopped to help someone who was injured there was always the risk of them suing you for injuries they sustained while you were helping them.
News like this really shows how many companies, businesses, and people in general have forsaken common sense for business sense. - kurfu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Sent the following email:
Colin Bruley was justified in his actions, and probably helped to save the woman's life. He was not acting as an employee, and did not deserve to be fired. Not only does he deserve his job back (if he still wants it, that is), but he also deserves an apology from your company. - jeffiek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Sure, and let the lady bleed to death. He's welcome to be my neighbor any day. You aren't.
- redrock34, on 10/11/2007, -9/+27Why would they fire a man who owns a shotgun?
- AF-Geek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18FTA: ""If I'd lose my job again for helping some girl's life ... I'd do it over and over," Bruley said."
Now THAT'S a man. Maybe all this attention will get him a job with a decent employer. - mandarin, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22Must be some old coot who owns that complex. Sue them!
- dakilla91, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18I can't wait till the company ***** themselves when they lose the lawsuit.
- shimmyNshake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I may be wrong, but I thought the legal definition of "brandishing" was to purposefully display a weapon in a threatening manner. I can walk around all day out in public with my gun, concealed or in plain view, however I'm not "brandishing" the weapon until I display the weapon in order to threaten or intimidate someone. It doesnt say in the article that he displayed or pointed his gun at the person that shot the woman, so I would say he didnt "brandish" his gun. He just carried it with him.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -12/+27"Surely no one would have intervened without protection."
I'm not sure about that, because as far as I can tell, the perpetrator was no longer at the scene. I'm pretty sure that you would help a bleeding person in the street without having a gun handy, assuming you didn't see someone else with a gun. - Pinhedd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Finally, someone with real American balls, we need more citizens like this guy!
- jun2san, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14It's crazy seeing a story on Digg only to realize it took place right down the road from me.
I'd love to see how digg will affect this apt. complex. - JohnGalt01, on 10/11/2007, -9/+22Moot point. You don't sound like someone to put your ass on the line to save someone anyway.
- allanpat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12@ jenovaside:
thanks for the legwork. i just emailed them a complaint. under Community, be sure to select 'Oaks at Mill Creek' which is where he worked. - jeffgentry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I just sent the following:
Definitely just added all your Dallas properties to my "don't live there" list. The dismissal of Colin Bruley in Jacksonville, FL for saving Tonnetta Lee is appalling. You may as well stick a sign in front of your properties saying, "Employees fired for self-defense; come help yourself." - GodsFavorite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12"She declined to comment further, citing confidentiality rules." From the apartment owners comments. Essentially: "We screwed up and are looking to cover it up until nobody is looking."
Unfortunatly he has a very distinct chance of losing, simply because the company has lots of money to throw at lawers and at the courts. He doesn't. - ebildave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Hey kolop1, he wasn't walking around with a shotgun, he was doing a very sane thing on his way to saving a life. I would do the same thing. Really, in the middle of the night, are you going to ponder and contemplate whether or not the screams are from someone who was on the wrong side of a firearm, or grab your protection and GO? Do you have any idea how many people are SAVED by being armed in the USA? A lot more than are reported. More good guys with guns = fewer bad guys with guns.
- shredswithpiks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11since he lived there and had the weapon in his home, and was off-clock, and living in florida... I'm pretty sure he has a very strong case to sue for some kind of wrongful dismissal.
as far as I know (at least in most shall-issue gun permit states) there are laws that prevent anyone, including the almighty government, from telling you when and where you can carry a weapon, and when you can brandish it in defense of others (read: his employers have no legal right to tell him what he can do with guns in his home and this is LOL ABSURD).
This company fired this dude for LEGAL and GOOD GUY behavior in his personal life.
If I had been in his position I would have quit the moment they even questioned my actions... it's not worth working for scum like the people at that company. - lavoie0ca, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10he'll be fine...
""If I'd lose my job again for helping some girl's life ... I'd do it over and over," Bruley said." --fta
He's got the right attitude. - MammaryMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If there is gun fire in an apartment near mine, I would not go over there to assist anyone without my 9. It is just common sense.
I would buy a shotgun, but I don't want to get a safe that big. - norman619, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10@joe:
My god how moronic is that? When you outlaw guns for the populace all you really are doing is making sure the only ones carrying guns are the criminals and guess what theya re gonna do with them guns? Do you honestly think criminals buy their guns legally? In NYC a street gang was busted with a freaking rocket launcher many years ago. Last I checked those are illegal. Didn't seem to hinder their ability to buy one now did it? Assault rifles are illegal here in the US yet I know where I can go buy one if I needed to. Gun control is a fantasy. Fact is criminals look for easy targets. Unarmed folks where they have a better chance of getting away w/o getting hurt or killed. Legal gun ownership has nothing to do with the muder or crime rates of any country. Do some research before making such an ass-up-head statement like that. - jjesusfreak01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@fkr3
It shouldnt be a problem if the numbers posted are easily and publicly available on the internet through a community website, should it? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Typical corporate BS that we seem to put up with day in & day out. I am glad the incident hasn't shaken his faith in helping people.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9No, you misunderstand. He's an employee, but he lives there too.
So yes, you'd be right if he had it in his office there and he was working. But it was in his home.
edit: Bah, in the time it took me to double check what I said, everyone else said the same thing :) - gyrfalcon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I'll make sure to call the police if I ever see you getting the crap beat out of you then...dipwad
