- BucksOSU, on 10/02/2009, -2/+587Is it real? Snopes says no..
http://www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/palisades.asp - talisker, on 10/01/2009, -11/+578This is spot on. Parents (and I am one,) would rather blame the system than look in a mirror when it comes the the failing of raising a child. I hope they aren't forced to take the message down, but I bet the parents will vote that they do.
- Xaevier, on 10/02/2009, -4/+562I moved to another country and called them and it was still in English =(
- somebodyscream, on 10/02/2009, -5/+374I hope it's not fake. that was awesome.
Also dugg for the youtube user's poor literacy skills. - KWeasel, on 10/02/2009, -2/+328Wait, all you do is press 6 and they raise your child for you?
Now that's service. - ErrorLoading, on 10/02/2009, -1/+249The moment I heard "Thanks for calling your school" instead of an actual school name I knew it was fake.
- shrewduser, on 10/02/2009, -20/+229i didn't really pick up any xenophobia, they're just pointing out that in Australia they speak english and can't be expected to provide language services at every public school simply because your english isn't up to scratch.
- borez, on 10/02/2009, -6/+215Dugg for honesty.
- Reebee52, on 10/02/2009, -0/+183He was one of the students that skipped.
- punkybrewster77, on 10/02/2009, -30/+179It isn't xenophobia zslice... it is basically saying that the language for Australia/New Zealand is English and if you don't speak English, and you still want to hear the message, by all means, move to the country that speaks your language, but don't expect the school to cater to your lack of English. I wish they would do that here in the US.
Parents make excuses for their children and then the children end up beating each other up, bringing weapons to school, shooting each other, doing drugs and yet... it is all because some teacher gave the kid an F for not doing his homework (sarcasm) be real folks... your kid is an ignorant spoiled brat and you did it, not the school! - tgc1, on 10/02/2009, -8/+102I agree. If you go to a foreign country and expect them to accommodate you because you cannot speak the local language YOU are the idiot.
- jeffwmartin, on 10/02/2009, -0/+93"...why your child is absents"
- EmitStop, on 10/02/2009, -3/+94You know, there is a reply button.
- frostbyt, on 10/02/2009, -12/+103"If you want this in another language move to another country that speaks it."
Genius. - rolls20s, on 10/02/2009, -7/+84Should we blame the government?
Or blame society?
Or should we blame the images on TV?
No, blame Canada! - jseres, on 10/02/2009, -10/+86Xenophobia..? You seriously can't be ***** serious. As an immigrant, I am so ***** tired of when people cling to that *****. I didn't move to America from Hungary and expect everyone to speak Hungarian for me. I learned English and did my part in assimilation. So seriously ***** off.
- Zoshchenko, on 10/02/2009, -2/+67The transcriber of the message obviously missed several days of English class...
"why your child is absents"???? - punkybrewster77, on 10/02/2009, -5/+68Parents are not forced to send their children here... DUH... they have private schools, charter schools, and even home schools for this reason.
- bhny, on 10/02/2009, -2/+65it is an australian accent.
we don't all sound like crocodile hunters. - DatDudeWiggs, on 10/02/2009, -9/+63No, the best part was "If you would like to hear this in a different language, move somewhere that speaks it." Classic.
- rompom7, on 10/02/2009, -0/+54"... and did not complete enogh"
- NielsJonker, on 10/02/2009, -4/+53And the woman on the phone doesn't have an Australian accent,
and they denied it:
http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/story/2009/09 ... - JinxCrow, on 10/02/2009, -2/+46As a kid it pissed me off that my mother had given me strong work ethics and a desire to learn and educate myself, yet barely anyone else at school was like that, yet my grades were barely above theirs. There were times I couldn't rely on a teacher to be taught anything, and overall it pissed me off that lazy slackers and idiots eased onto the next grade doing little to any work, but hey I went to a great college and they all stayed at home and worked at McDonalds.
- mlvassallo, on 10/02/2009, -1/+41If for a split second you thought this was real just because some youtube video claimed it was then you need to shut your computer off and go outside for the day. Think of it as recess.
- punkybrewster77, on 10/02/2009, -9/+47I totally agree! While my son did have a lousy teacher last year here in the states, this year his teacher is awesome. I wish that they would do that whole "if you want this message in another language then move to that country" thing here... in puerto rico, I mean central florida!
- appleofdischord, on 10/02/2009, -5/+43That's because hungarian is a ***** impossible language.
- stuwanker, on 10/02/2009, -1/+37Well, the message WAS written by disgruntled teachers (in a California charter school, not in Australia), but they didn't actually put it on the answering machine.
- UndeniablyRexer, on 10/02/2009, -0/+36Good thing you speak the language then.
- alcimedes, on 10/02/2009, -0/+34I thought they were all part of "Not the United States"
- robdiggity, on 10/02/2009, -5/+37Dugg for being a right fair dinkum.
Or something. - robbob, on 10/02/2009, -0/+31enogh
- giveer, on 10/02/2009, -1/+32It is awesome.. but it is fake..

Oh well.. laughs are real. - AlanLivingston, on 10/02/2009, -2/+31What college classes take attendance? Maybe upper level classes, but they don't so much take attendance as just notice you're not present and not contributing because class sizes are usually smaller. When I was a freshman, my financial accounting prof. bitched me out because I asked him what room the final was in. He said he was tired of students that only showed up for exams and the final. As such, he wasn't going to tell me where the final was.
Fair enough. So I discretely stalked him through the lecture hall until he entered a room. - estate, on 10/02/2009, -1/+29Makes me proud to be a Queenslander. :)
Unfortauntely, a hoax.
Here's the local paper's story. http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/story/2009/09 ... - thcobbs, on 10/02/2009, -9/+36But I think what's killing the world is the prevalence of politically correct speech. Sometimes, you just have to come out and slap someone in the face with the truth... not use pretty words that no one finds offensive.
- alcimedes, on 10/02/2009, -3/+30I hate to be the one to always bring this up, but there is NO OFFICIAL LANGUAGE in the US.
None. - BKred, on 10/02/2009, -0/+26As a teacher, I say fine. If you can keep up with the work on your own and do fine on the tests, more power to you. Please know, though, that I will probably get crap from an administration who won't understand that.
What bugs me are the kids who don't show up to a third of classes and then act all surprised when they fail tests. And then the parents complain at me about not providing all the work they're missing. I hate having to reproduce notes, homework, and makeup tests for students who couldn't be bothered to show up in the first place. - Treshnell, on 10/02/2009, -2/+26Yes, that was the point of the song.
- lukeatron, on 10/02/2009, -0/+24You know, it amazes me how little the keep-your-hands-off-my-money types don't appreciate what an incredible advantage it is to not be surrounded by hoards of utterly uneducated, unemployable sick people. If you honestly think your quality of life would not be substantially impacted just because you yourself can afford the schooling and health care you desire, you are just straight up delusional.
- eanbowman, on 10/02/2009, -1/+23When things are too easy for you - it takes away a bit of your motivation to try.
I have a friend who had 90 absences but had nearly perfect grades. He's an engineer now but I suppose regular school didn't work for him.
Sure he doesn't do things the way most other people do, but he's so valuable to his company they simply won't let him leave. He works harder than anyone else in that firm I'm sure.
Well not harder, probably smarter.
My experience was similar. I was shoved in enrichment classes and stuff. The thing is, with me I just work quickly because with ADHD I want to hyper-focus and then move on. My academic success has been more like a rollercoaster - but the work situation is similar.
For some people, plodding along in school simply doesn't do it for them. *shrug*
Although I have to agree, being taught a good work ethic by my parents helped me tons in life. I just didn't always apply it when it didn't seem beneficial. :P - rnawky, on 10/02/2009, -2/+23You heard/read it too‽
- inactive, on 10/02/2009, -3/+24That's BS. Everybody (unless you're retarded) has the ability to learn another language. Sure you may not reach native like fluency, but you can learn to communicate with co-nationals on a basic level.
I moved to Russia for 2 years with no language training and with some effort learned the language just fine.
Stop making excuses for people which don't want to- and don't make the effort to assimilate into American culture. - DarthVolta, on 10/02/2009, -0/+20I don't have a problem with people speaking their native language - I think it's great. I love hearing all kinds of languages. But if you're going to work in a service job, you need to speak English.
If you can't speak English, don't be a waiter. Don't work in the drive-thru. It's just a matter of efficiency and having the skills necessary. - cygnus2112, on 10/02/2009, -2/+21They fund it indirectly through their rent, since it's the property owners who will pay the taxes for that unit / apartment complex / etc and will defer the cost of the mortgage + taxes + upkeep.
But I'd hate to see how illiterate countries would become if school were voluntary or what communities would turn to for the families that could not afford paying for their children's education out of pocket (instead of taxes.)
As much as you may hate the public education system, the alternative to not having it is much, much worse. But you are in the States, zachary, and so your angst against the system is very well noted and likely justified. Canada's public school systems are actually pretty decent in comparison.
People without children will likely always argue about the fairness about being taxed. Just think of it as the system that supposedly educated you and you're now paying back into it .. or it's within your best interest that your neighbors and those who will support you in your old age are allowed the chance to receive a proper education. - dante88, on 10/02/2009, -1/+19You must be a Youtube commenter.

- Swivelstick, on 10/02/2009, -6/+21Then how come the teachers don't speak the language of the locals? I heard English and I'm sure that isn't the language of choice for the Kabi Kabi people..
