- ers35, on 10/10/2007, -11/+243"...and $8 when an approved business verifies that the information you submitted is accurate."
If the business has to approve that the information is accurate, why not just ask the owner in the first place? - Jazzillion, on 10/10/2007, -3/+186Can we bury this story just so a select few of us can capitalize on this gig?
- mandarin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+155Would strip bars be ok?
- MegaSilver, on 10/10/2007, -17/+110Grrrrr........ US only.....

I wonder how many businesses are actually going to complete this step. - catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+75You are supposed to talk to the owner and give them information on google adwords and google maps. Thats why its a referral. I don't think this is supposed to be a stealth thing where you just go around and take pictures. It's more like door to door sales.
- wootup, on 10/10/2007, -3/+73US only...for now perhaps. This is a fking GOOD idea and google has the cash to make it happen. Wow.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+68Second job, here I come!
- BLyn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+63Wow... an ambitious task for sure... not to mention how difficult it will be to maintain with constantly changing hours, or store closures etc.
But if anyone is going to do it... might as well be google. - vackraord, on 10/10/2007, -7/+56Must get my camera repaired.
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -10/+58U S A! U S A!
Wow, haven't done that in awhile. Not very often when you can anymore! - tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -10/+57Hell even if you live in a small town, like myself, there have to be at least 100 businesses here.
$1000 for doing practically nothing, count me in! - jd33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+44Practically nothing? What do you mean? That sounds like a ***** of work to me... going around to 100 businesses, taking pictures, gathering all store info, making sure the owner verifies...not to mention all the paperwork involved.
- floppyparty, on 10/10/2007, -5/+44Give some homeless people cheap digital cameras and have them submit it at a public library.
- wendelgee2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36In NYC, with the density of businesses...*drool*
- eklass, on 10/10/2007, -8/+40Buried as inaccurate... you only get $2 for "walking in and taking pictures". You have to convince the owner (and maybe remind him/her) to verify that information, for the other $8.
Getting users to do /anything/ is hard. Having to remember to do something? Forget it... - archd3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31ahh...allAdvantage.
Here's to the people that wrote the "random surf" programs that allowed me to collect an extra $23.74 each month - dolemite5005, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33Seems like an awful lot of work for $10.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/10/2007, -7/+33If this hits Canada... I think I'll quit my day job
- Salgat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26You have to gather other information, inform the business, and have them cooperate in approving your entry later on.
- antiver, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24Where can we go to start making up local businesses?
- Asianwaste, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25Nah, this deal can range from a total waste of time to not all that worth it. Unless you live in po-dunk where you are the only person in a 5 mile radius with an internet connection and everything is within a walking distance you are going to find that there's people who would beat you to the punch for the referral or you'll be paying more for gas than you are getting checks from google. This is the sort of thing I would have loved to have done in middle school to save up for a new game. We had AllAdvantage's ad bar during my time and it's no freaking wonder that service went under so fast. Oh well I cashed in.

Business major? - thecity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Too bad for you, I also work downtown and will break your camera if I see you moving in on my turf!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Ineffective? You have no idea what you're talking about.
- clickwir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Or with just the pics of your GF.
- Wolfie351, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Don't forget about the density of other people participating too. You could spend an entire week going to businesses that have already been listed by someone else.
- igoratwork, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Here is the verification part that the business has to fill out in order for submitter to get the $8. Seems pretty reasonable to me:
https://www.google.com/local/verify/confirmPin?gsessionid=JjzhqNg0ZKU - ColtRevolvers, on 10/10/2007, -17/+34You have the single best name I have ever seen on digg.
- Heaiser, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17I think you need to reread the article.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16just quit it now, move to a big city and beg. It's probably more effective.
- ToadLeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I agree...having to talk to a business, explain to them what this Google program is, getting them to agree, and then working with them to get photographs and information about them. Then getting only $10? That's hardly "payment", more like an "incentive" to get people, who might do it for free anyway, to support their local businesses.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19This is extraordinarily ***** pay for a fairly difficult sales assignment. You get paid a nominal fee once and google gets ad revenue forever. MAYBE you can make 10 bux an hour by irritating every story in a 10 mile radius for a few weeks.
Google Slave ftw? Nah. - jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15My God both of ya'll must have fallen out of the same tree. "So... how does one become authorized to be a contractor?" Answer:"walk into a store and get their info and send it to google."
No. If you want to find out about how to do this why not go read the ***** page? Hint: There's a link right there in big blue letters. As for you Monk, your answer would be good if the question was "how do you work this job?" But that wasn't the question was it...... - Rodalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13You're not considering all the other work that goes into this.
You have to get permission from the store owner to photograph their store, collect information from the store owner, convince them that it's worth their time to go to Google's site and verify all the data once you've uploaded it.
Then you have to take the pictures, bring those images to your home PC, organize them, upload them along with all the store information you collected from the store owner/manager. Then you have to make sure that the store owner goes to the site and verifies the information you uploaded or you miss out on $8 out of the $10 that you could possibly make. Think you can do all that in less than an hour, on average, for each business? I seriously doubt it.
Not at all even remotely close to being worth the time and effort. - wipis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14As a waiter who's income is hit or miss this is very tempting.
- Birdoftruth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13This is just someone who tried to get into the internet affiliate marketing business but went broke from horrible adwords advertisements.
- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15At least $200 for doing practically nothing! Count me in!
- neshcom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You can't read. Up to means that the payment is in two parts ($2 and $8) and you get each part based on the approval and verification of the business.
- mixrecords, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Funny, I had just applied yesterday... I thought I was getting in late on the action!
- mirzar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13finally that 180 dollar camera is going to pay off
- one1plus1one, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Finally that $10 polaroid I bought at a garage sale in 1987 will pay off.
- tosh9i, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17Anyone who is thinking about doing this is just plain "STUPID". And that's what Google thinks you are…STUPID. That's why they're willing to hire you as contractors, you are going to be their pet.
As it has been stated, they are going to pay you $2 for the info and $8 "if" the Customer sends in the confirmation. And that's only if someone else hasn't already gathered the info, in which case, you get nothing.
You can't just go store to store, take a picture and move on. You have to interact with the people there.
SCENARIO:
• Gather your camera and other equipment: 15 min
• Drive to the store: 10 min
• Find a suitable place to take a picture: 5 min
• Take a picture (Note: when you take a picture, you have to wait for the right moment. In other words, the images must not contain "persons or any sexually suggestive content"): 5 min
• Gather info on the store (e.g. name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, hours open): 15 min
• Wait for someone to talk to (e.g. manager): 5 min
• Explain what you're doing: 5 min Note: at this point, you can get rejected, and would have wasted 60 minutes.
• If not rejected, then you will "provide Customers with information about Google Maps ("Google Maps") and the Google AdWords Program ("AdWords"), including without limitation, distributing to such Customers related marketing materials prepared by Google (collectively, "Services")": 20 min
• Uh oh, a spill on isle 4. The manager has to see to this problem, so you're left waiting: 15 min
• The manager comes back and you finish trying to "sell" him Googles' Services: 10 min
• You walk out to your car: 2 min
Okay that comes to a total of 102 min (1 hour 42 min). But, it's still early, so you run across the street and do another store. Luckily, this manager didn't have to run off in the middle of your conversation. And that comes to: 64 minutes. So, it's been a total of 2 hours and 46 minutes.
• It’s lunch time, so you drive off to a small restaurant: 10 min
• You think, “why not do this place as well.”: 2 min
• You find the right spot for a picture: 5 min
• You wait for the people to clear, but it’s lunch hour and there’re a lot of people: 20 min
• You attempt to take a picture, but one of the employees sees you and asks you what you’re doing: 2 min
• You try and explain the situation and then request to see the manager: 8 min
• The manager’s busy, so you just eat your lunch while gathering info: 25 min
• You continue to wait until lunch hour is over: 20 min
• Finally, the manager is willing to see you, but he explains that someone else has already been there and filled him in: 5 min
That lunch took you 97 minutes. Now it’s been a total of 263 minutes (4 hours and 23 minutes), and you’re sick of tired of waiting and explaining, so you go home.
• Drive home: 18 min
• Type out all of the info: 25 min
• Upload high resolution photos: 10 min
Finally, you’re done, at least, for the most part. After 316 min (5 hours and 16 minutes), you have successfully “referred” two businesses.
10 days later, you receive an email stating that one of the grocery stores you “referred” has already been done by someone else. It turns out that a different manager was on duty at that time. But, thankfully, you still have one “referred” business.
2 months later, you check your balance, and it’s only $2. Apparently, the manager never bothered sending in the confirmation. You send an email to Google requesting that they send you a check for $2. 72 hours later, you get a response saying that if you want your money, you’ll have to earn at least $25. As a result, you end up losing your temper and shoot yourself. - crawf061, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12in this case it doesn't me anything from 0 to 10... it means $0, $2 or $10... $2 for the initial (approved) info and $8 for verification from the business
- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I think that is the point of having the merchant confirm the information. This crucial step allows Google to establish a relationship with the merchant, with out the stigma associated with an employee of some mega corp walking in asking for information. Once they get this confirmation it will be easy for them to get the merchant to update the information when needed.
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I thinking we need to take the internet away from retards.
- xero9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Hehe, and the nice little app MyAdvantage.. Moved your mouse all over so I didn't have to :)
- theholycow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10"Unless you live in a po-dunk where you are the only person in a 5 mile radius with an internet connection and everything is within a walking distance"
Yee-haw! I love living in the sticks. It's quiet around here unless I'm firing a potato cannon. The air is clean and smells like trees. There's no light pollution at night, so I can see the stars. I can do whatever I want in my yard and work on my house without getting a permit for every nail. And now, I can make money by taking pictures of the hole-in-the-wall stores downtown that sell garbage that they call "antiques"! - NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Seems like something business would do them selves. I know id want my store hours posted on google. If its 4:00 and my store says open till 6 and none of my competitors had their store hours posted i'm pretty sure i'd get that customer.
