- GemStar38, on 11/12/2007, -24/+187ok, 13 is way to young to be living on your own.
- thedarkrabbit, on 11/12/2007, -12/+145"How old are you?"
"16"
"18? Alright..."
"MOM!!!"
"I like where this is going! Giggity"
In all seriousness... this is pretty messed up! I know at 13 I would not have been able to live on my own... someone needs to help this kid. - radu79, on 11/12/2007, -11/+114I'd rather live alone at 13 then live in some foster home.
Nothing wrong in learning how to take care of yourself, I am sure later in life it will pay off. - spyd3rweb, on 11/14/2007, -5/+83Hi im Chris Hansen from Dateline NBC, why don't you take a seat over there.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -2/+67This is in the papers here, and the DoCS has issued a statement saying that the girl has been offered proper accommodation etc. 10 times now, she just keeps refusing it (way to not mention that, article). They have no legal precedent to force her out of her house.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -2/+64Pfft. I was taking courses in the womb. I also have 800TB's of storage, and 5ps3's
Notice what I did there? - SRSco, on 11/12/2007, -2/+54¡Policía de la Gramática!*
- nakile, on 11/14/2007, -5/+46This is probably just some setup for "To Catch a Predator: Australia."
- Aindrea, on 11/12/2007, -12/+51that's way too much for a 13-year old to handle.
- ctrlv, on 11/14/2007, -1/+36Why don't you have a seat?
- Backdrifts, on 11/12/2007, -1/+36Oh, I know! No thirteen year old girl should have to live without a shotgun! I can feel her pain.
But seriously, we do have guns here - it's just a lot harder to purchase them. You can't just walk into a random gun store and but a shotgun; you need a permit and a reason for it (farmer, etc). - Ravie, on 11/12/2007, -8/+42If your 13 year old niece can't be left alone for one night, she's waaaay immature for her age. Most parents can occasionally leave their kid alone in the house for a night by the time they're 11 or 12 or so.
- kettlechips, on 11/12/2007, -6/+38Big deal, I was 13 at age 8.
- inspecality, on 11/12/2007, -3/+34wow
- MetalLizard, on 11/13/2007, -32/+61Give her a 20 gauge shotgun or something. Oh wait, my bad, no guns in Australia. Hope she doesn't become a victim. I feel deeply sorry for her.
- Mike89, on 11/12/2007, -2/+2816 is the age of consent in Australia anyway.
- Ltgeo, on 11/12/2007, -6/+31No guns in Australia... and no school shootings every second week.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -4/+29Pedobear is watching you.
- Celeron, on 11/11/2007, -2/+26Owned.
- Leomarth, on 11/12/2007, -0/+24Teenagers can be a lot more mature than given credit for if given the right upbringing and circumstances. Most parents, however, don't raise their children to be mature adults; they raise them to be children. And then they wonder why they have 35 year olds who haven't moved out yet.
We also tend to project, and even enforce, what our beliefs of what a "child" should be onto teenagers - we keep them in a state of artificial childhood.
I have no idea how this girl was raised, but if she makes it on her own, it'll be a good sign that she was raised right. - SRSco, on 11/12/2007, -11/+34too*
- samurimaster, on 11/12/2007, -3/+24Now theres a kid with some guts.
- sandaboy, on 11/12/2007, -4/+24What a ***** step-sister...what a ***** grandfather...they can't even take in their own at a time of need! Unbelievable how people fail to have a heart.
- inspecality, on 11/11/2007, -1/+20That joke doesn't even come close to applying.
- stacky, on 11/12/2007, -0/+19The Australian media has been blaming DoCS (Department of Community Services), who have been the subject of several negative stories recently. This story ignores the fact that DoCS actually sent her to live with friends, then family, multiple times, and each time she returned home, saying she didn't want to live anywhere but her house.
Yes it is a sad story, but don't jump to conclusions without knowing any background. - Wacer, on 11/11/2007, -0/+19It doesn't cost you anything to have an ounce of sympathy. What a stupid comment and a waste of a cuss word.
- YEMandy, on 11/11/2007, -4/+22"Reply to this comment"
- lithera, on 11/13/2007, -1/+18This story reminds me of a girl I met when I was younger. She was 14, lived on her own as well. Had a job., decent place to stay and as far as she could she took care of her younger sister (their mom wasn't very capable of raising kids) At that time I had to leave the house as well at 16yrs of age, she basically guided me through all the steps needed to get on my feet.
That girl was one of the strongest persons I ever met in my life.
13 or 14 isnt a age where you should be concerned about such things but that doesn't mean they can't handle it. Willpower can get you a long way............ - latrosicarius, on 11/12/2007, -1/+18Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Either that, or Oakes is way too overprotective.
- spawesume, on 11/11/2007, -0/+16DeVry doesn't count.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+17She'll grow up fast and be way ahead of her peers instead of coddled and protected from the world until the age of 18. But then I'm only speaking from my experience as an American. I wouldn't wish foster care on anyone in his country. Maybe in Australia it's different and they actually expect kids to be responsible.
- Ravie, on 11/11/2007, -2/+18How exactly is the government going to give her a "normal childhood?" The best thing they can do is to hook her up with somesort of Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. She'd probably be worse off in foster care, and if she doesn't want to go, she shouldn't be made to.
- inspecality, on 11/11/2007, -2/+18i can barely tell you are 16 too, lol.
- Joab, on 11/11/2007, -3/+19Dude the US foster care system is kinda ***** up in major cites. Don't believe the hype.
- Urusai, on 11/11/2007, -0/+14Two jobs at the factory still leaves time to turn some tricks at the wharf before dumpster-diving for your dinner. ***** lazy kids these days...
- Yoshi39, on 11/12/2007, -1/+15Thats Switzerland not Sweden!
- aussieNickuss, on 11/12/2007, -3/+17Pedobear loves you.
- chillypacman, on 11/12/2007, -2/+15and you just turned this into a debate on gun control.
For the record Australia is quite asafe place, I think the fact we have laws that prevent psychopaths from recieving firearms (laws that are actually enforced unlike ina certain other country) keeps us mostly safe. We don't need to arm 13 year olds with firearms so that they can defend themselves against other people who are also excercising their right to bare arms ;-) - doctorfungi, on 11/12/2007, -1/+14Take a seat, right over there...
- Wacer, on 11/11/2007, -1/+14What no address to donate some money?
- MikeDirntRulez, on 11/11/2007, -1/+14Where? In Cambodia?
- goffy59, on 11/11/2007, -1/+14Would you like to play the daughter and daddy game with someone you don't even know. How about this, they raise you differently then your used to. I'm sure shes better off being taken care of by friends then a ***** foster home. Any kid would be worse off in a home that totally changes the formula and is "forced" to be like the people that take them in. And at the same time, those people can say; fine you don't want to live like I live, we are taking you back to social services.
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -1/+13Yea "wow" just about covers it. No, wait, "pedophile" is a better description for you rollfizzlebeef...
- latrosicarius, on 11/11/2007, -1/+13Indeed. There's a limited supply of cuss words.
- inactive, on 11/11/2007, -0/+11tasty with some lemon and herbs.
- qpn6ph9q, on 11/11/2007, -0/+11Australians might just have tougher skin
- Wacer, on 11/12/2007, -0/+10I was referring to a charity that is helping her. One would think that if the news people who wrote that article would find out if there is a way for people to help.
- OhTheHumanity1, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9Unfortunately, if you read the article that is linked to at the bottom of the page, she has refused to live with people like her own mother, so it sounds like the article we just read is making the DoCS out to be worse than it is... the girl appears to be a difficult case
- Porch, on 11/12/2007, -1/+10It sounds like she is doing fine. Friends stopping by, neighbors, etc. Moving her some place else would rip away what little she has left. As long as she can handle it and is OK, I don't see an issue. Not like people spend any time at home nowdays. It's just a place to crash for the night.
- stacky, on 11/11/2007, -1/+10In America the claim their right to bear arms, in Australia we just need the right to bear legs.
