getting this closer to the top
NSFW ads !!!!!!!!!!
I opened the page at work.. luckily no one saw. - flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15This sub didn't just surface at a random beach, she's leaving port. There is a breakwater and a buoy marking the (dredged) channel for traffic. The last shot is an extreme telephoto, which makes the sub seem closer to the beach than it is. Many of the beachgoers are youngish and fit - it is possible they are in the military themselves. And yes, that is a big, fscking, and scary quiet sub. Much respect to the designers, builders, and gallant crews.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Suddenly, I want to buy some Speedo's.
- Spetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nice photos. Really puts the scale into perspective.

ICBM's too phallic for some? :) - hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10too many banana hammocks in these photos
- wupike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5haha those are dudes homie.
- chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Damn, beat me by 5 minutes. My favorite part was the flashing gif boobs. Thanks.
- jprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5See, I'm usually scared of jellyfish and crabs that poop near my feet when I'm in the ocean... I have no idea what I would do if this situation surfaced in front of me. (pun intended) Probably get in my nuclear fall out shelter to be safe.
- SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yes, that is a good statement. However, if the sub has surfaced for a very long time, and people are not curious about it anymore, they would stop looking.
- westfork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The comments below the pic are a big discussion that it's all Photoshop.
That and a bunch of Anti-Semitic, nationalist chest beating...
They sound like 14 gamers. - sawyer3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5could have been, sure.. is it, highly unlikely. in the last picture (along with the others too of course), a good majority of people in view of this camera, are looking out at it. these are not photoshopped images. they are however, pictures of one big m-f'in sub.
- sc0re, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Direct link to the images, for the people viewing this at work ;-)

- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4there is nothing funny about a man's unit on display in tight clothing.
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a channel - the sub is passing through on it's way out to sea or on it's way back to port. This likely occurs so often, that nobody cares to gawk at it for very long... but for the record - there are a number of people staring at it.
- HawksNest2lol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Its a NATO codename Typhoon class. Just because its from the 80's doesn't mean it can not run today. The US has many many boats from the 70's/80's that are still in service. The USS Nimitz ( CVN-68 ) was commissioned in 1975. The USS Kitty Hawk ( CV-63 ) was commissioned in 1961. There are many other ships from these periods of time as well.
- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3cool and all but i see this every few weeks in Puget Sound just West of Seattle.. we have Banger Sub Hanger.. wich is the largest grouping of nukes in subs on earth..
- perseon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tell me about it. Most of them seem oblivious. I know if a nuclear submarine carrying ICBMs were cruising by me, I would crap my pants.
- sawyer3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3system84...
so you mean to tell me that in the last photo, all the women on the shoreline aren't looking out at it in unison? and coming too close to shore is "dumb"... for all you know there's a military harbor to the right of the view finder. not to mention, other parts of the world are much more desensitized to visions of military might than western people are. - jased, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can someone link to the images, to get around the NSFW ads?
- sirnicholai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use Adblock and Filterset.g with Firefox. I couldn't tell what NSFW ads you guys were talking about till I remembered how much I love that combination.
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those are some pretty cool pictures. That being said, I used to live on Dabob Bay (Hood Canal, Bangor Base nearby) and submarines would surface all the time out in the bay, it's really not that uncommon at all to see our submarines out and about. Now granted, we don't have the Akula, but Akula's themselves have been known to sit off of our beaches (in International waters of course) to monitor our submarine activity. Now that would be an amazing sight (amazingly scary, that is).
- grimstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you look closely you can see a buoy near the sub...looks like there might be a channel there for things like this.
- zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WARNING: Russian Men in Speedos in these images. Speedos are WRONG.
My eyes! The goggles, they do nothing! - drewp24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Judging by all of the speedos, this is definitely European.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I doubt it's fake. I shot this picture on a very cloudy day off the coast of San Diego, CA. USS Ronald Reagan. http://img515.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn19545bc.jpg
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why don't you ask Dr. Henry Jones Sr?
- LeftistPersona, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If I recall, it's 580 feet long, with a nested hull, in addition to have 2 nuclear reactor plants and twin screws. I wonder where it's going.
- ArchdukeValidus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The submarine that NATO calls the "Typhoon", the Russians call the Akula (Shark).
The submarine that NATO calls the "Akula", the Russians call the Shuka (Pike). - ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No one is staring at it. What kind of place sees that enough to be blasé about it?
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Looks like those people don't care. It's probably normal everyday thing in russia.

Come on people. - LeftistPersona, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Check out in the pictures, there are pretty big groups of ppl standing around on the beach. In addition, chances are this boat hadn't submerged, and was slowly sailing by.
- misinformation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, there are beaches on the black sea. There are even resorts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_sea#Holiday_resorts_and_spas - dknightbatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats amazing, that is once in a lifetime things.
- npinski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2any beach on the black sea?
- redlandmover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3its not an akula (attack sub), its a boomber (typhoon)
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Americans reselling marked-up Japanese electronics to Russians? Yes, premise of that commercial was a little strange. You also have to wonder how a Soviet sub managed to penetrate the American midwest? It's a "land sub."
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where did they get this photo?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.c4i.org/rmss.html

- Dotnetsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yo! Break out de Wodka, Comrades!
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's not a normal every day thing anywhere. Subs like this generally stay hidden to avoid being detected, and their operational routes are carefully kept secrets. I assume the point of this was to prove these Typhoon subs are still operational.
- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seems awfully shallow waters for such a big sub. luckily it didn't run amok on shore
- HawksNest2lol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Typhoon is the NATO designated name for the Akula 941 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_class ). The NATO designation for Project 971 is Akula ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akula ) So do not report the summary as inaccurate.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The one you're thinking of this the Alfa. That was the attack sub in Red October that chased the Typhoon and is the fastest, deepest diving military sub in the world. It had a titanium hull!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_class_submarine
http://www.deepseadesigns.net/alphaclass.html
The Akula was the one in Crimson Tide. It has better sensors than the Alfa and is quieter but doesn't have the same performance.
There is also an Akula II that was built in 2001, which is the most advanced sub the Russians have right now. -
