- swOhio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Too bad they didn't form that around a car or two. Talk about a good prank!
- hambend, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36Well *****, you're practically famous.
- dyvbond, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26uh oh! where does it start?
- xice88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19where does it end?!
- imac12, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Maybe they'll teach you proper English first... focusing on the usage of you're and your.
- GiJoeBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Please help us keep prices low by returning your cart to the store or to one of the convenient drop off points throughout the parking lot.
- ruded0g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I can see it now, these things start popping up all across the US, It could be our version of the crop circle!
- shellshocklxbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I wonder if you push it if it rolls in that same shape or does it fall apart.
- leftfield, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It's all middle!!!
- hudson99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You were expecting a dodecahedron?
- matrixbandit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Fake or not, its neat. It makes you want to jump inside it and do battle. It's like a poor mans thunderdome!
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Compubomb - Open mouth, insert foot....
The Costco is to the left of the picture. The CompUSA is in the same shopping center. - d17182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, a circle, that's some impressive geometry there.
Now do it in Mobius strip. - LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Reminds me of when my friends worked at a grocery store where the carts were never locked up, yet kept outside. In about half an hour they took every cart the store had, turned them upside down in every parking space so that it was impossible to manuver a car into any space. Then they blocked both entrances with carts as well.
Harmless and Hilarious - the cart boy and opening manager were less than impressed but it was a larf for everyone else! - citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Thats crazy.. thats in Goleta near Santa Barbara i live about 1 block away from this
wish i would have seen this for real - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Uh oh, so which one is it? Goleta or Santa Barbara?
Seems like we've got a fight in our hands. - Creeture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's the CostCo / CompUSA parking lot at 7095 Market Place Drive, Goleta, CA
http://tinyurl.com/2wuouq - Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Algebraic!
- BassJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What would be really cool is if they did this with some of the shopping carts we have in the UK, they don't trust shoppers over here so all the trolleys are chained together. You have to insert a £1 coin into a device on the handle to release if from the trolley in front. It's designed in such a way that you can't get your coin back using the connector from your own trolley so you need to return it to get your coin back!
Now what I'm thinking is to do this, but chain them all together :-) I'd also love to know how long this took to put together and I'd love to see the face of the first shopper in the next day! - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have never seen a lamppost with "seagull sh!t all over it" the seagull population tends to go down as you get a way from water. maybe this is far enough away from the ocean not to have seagulls.
- Elrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Key phrase is "return them to get your coin back."
This provides an incentive to shoppers to return their own carts, rather than requiring the store to hire people to round them up periodically from the parking lot.
Except here in the U.S. it's generally a quarter, not an entire £1! - lnf69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh, thanks, I didn't read that part, stupid me.
But then again I guessed it, Goleta is in Santa Barbara County, just the next town north of Santa Barbara, the city. - mrTribal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This one worked for me...
http://www.robertwechsler.com/images/applied_geometry.jpg - mikewhalley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cart Boy : Oh no, not again.
- trosenbl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Rhombus!
- gittes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is my best friend's site... I actually made it for him. This is awesome that it got dugg. He's an artist and you should all check out the rest of his site.
He's really going to be on my ass about expanding his site now... - hirschmj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg for Freebirds. Best burritos ever.
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13There's something new on the news every 10 seconds. And guess what? Whatever they're talking about is in *somebody's* town...
- Rocketbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally! A link that works!
- DougO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That there is something about so frivolous an endeavor that warms the cockles of my heart, which is saying something, because I have no idea what a cockle is!
- zanzibuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, I thought I recognized it! I used to live down the street too...
It is definitely Goleta, not Santa Barbara. - mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Two men enter, one man leaves
- TypeMRT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I recognized it immediately, but I've only been there once...in 2001. Most of Isla Vista (DP) is pretty much a mental blur though, except FreeBird's damn good burritos.
- hepoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kinda cool i guess, although i have to admit i was hoping for something way cooler; heck any kid can do that.
- snoudude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great.... Now we'll be seeing more mysterious "Cart Circles" in the mall parking lots across America. I can old men with caps and dowsing rods now....
- gittes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No no... The circle is big enough for them to curve perfectly... and he told me they were built for that (even though we all see them in straight lines).
It took him a few hours to do it... he got permission from the manager weeks before, and he started really early in the morning. He had to finish before the store opened. He also rented a crane to take that picture. - PresidentRolex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5http://www.robertwechsler.com/projects.html
- gittes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got the story a little wrong... he got permission just the day before, and it was on top of a rented ladder, not crane...
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was wondering the same thing.
- Rabbethan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1according to the website:
"A circle made by following the natural curve in a line of shopping carts. Costco parking lot Goleta, CA. 6:00 am May 5, 2004." - wbskeet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The shadows seem different lengths on the one side of the circle and not the other.
I am not an image analysis by I play one on digg. - mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Geometry? It's just a circle.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You guys are thinking waaaay too hard about the fakeness. Seriously, if you wanna argue that its fake, all you need to think about is "How the ***** do you get the last cart into that thing?" Fake argument completed. You would have to like...bend it or something, and I'm not sure how one would go about doing that without involving a car (most readily available bendy, smashy, heavy thing), plus I don't see any bent carts.
Still though, I suppose you could have just spaced out the carts a little bit so they're not terribly tight in the circle, which leaves me wanting to try and see if it can be done...Now to find a pile of unlocked carts and an unattended parking lot... - dolfinzangel, on 05/11/2008, -0/+0thats the costco i work at :]
- TherealObadiah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's probably like $30,000 worth of grocery carts there.
- lnf69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone recognize where in California?
I say Santa Barbara. - gittes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He's an artist: www.robertwechsler.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4How refreshingly dull.
- swean, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i think this happened in canada...
