- dmurray14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+84Yeah, the fact that he actually has some taste and doesn't cruise around in the newest rich "fad car" makes him an idiot. Right.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48If you want to stop car pollution quit bothering people with the fair-weather, weekend-only sports cars and start going after these millions of morons who are clogging our roads DAILY with their ***** SUV's that average 16mpg.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Your point is well made, and let me add to it. Of all the cars you're going enforce a ban, you want to get a sports car? Not the thousands of pointless SUV's causing unnecessary pollution and driving up gas prices?
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39The 959 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and I think its worth more than any of those cars (perhaps because of quantity?)
- sleepyness, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35The Governor of Washington is retarded. Most of the pollution in the US comes from factories. Cars create a small percentage of pollutants in the air.
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -11/+40frankly, it does on a fresh install... after you get done with the 45 minute installation process.
- musntSurfatWork, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29His Driveby gave the cops' radar gun a BSOD
- IrwinFletcher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I'd be curious to know what kind of car(s) are in the Governor's garage.
- codemonkey2841, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20You only need 7 million pepsi points!
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19"This exemption is under threat as Chris Gregoire, the Democrat Governor of Washington, considers ways to cut pollution, with further legal curbs on vehicles causing "gross emissions"."
yeah, that's great. Stop 1 car. Well done, you've sold this worlds problems. Give this guy a ***** medal. - dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16He has an Enzo. I live in the Redmond area and have see him driving it before.
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14And, there's a ton of old wrecks driven in the WA backwoods that pollute more than one supercar. Go after them first.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18whatever it is i'm sure it looks cool but only works with one set of tyres.
- ZeroG52, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@sinner
It's rare - only 250 built
It's fast - 0-320kph in 20 sec. (that's about 200mph)
It's a Porsche, which is the make he loves. - i64X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm sure him driving that car a few times a year does MUCH less damage to the environment than some bitch in a Hummer H2 that drives ONLY HERSELF to work and back every single day.
Get real. - MrOrange49, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Its not always about the "best", its about heritage, prestige and exclusivity. The 959 was (and still is) an amazing vehicle.
- SuckMyDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Even the richest man in the country is still chained by the balls by his wife. "What Gates would really like is his own race track, but I'm not sure Melinda would go for that". Bitch please.
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If you want fast and exclusive, go with the Bugatti Veyron - 1001hp, all-wheel-drive, and like the Porsche, was developed as a technology testbed at an astronomical financial loss to VW for each one built.
- doktorrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8IMHO, this is like removing artwork from a museum because it was made with lead-based paint.
As others have said, there just aren't enough of these cars around to make much of an environmental difference, especially when the "show and display" provisions limit them to 2500 miles a year. But it would be a huge loss to the automotive enthusiast community, who would otherwise not have a chance to experience these cars in motion, even if it's just watching.
I think this is more about classism and perceived conspicuous consumption. If I were Mr. Gates, I'd consider making my primary residence in another state and registering the car there. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I agree. I consider human impact on the environment to be the most important problem we face today, but I don't think a $700,000 supercar is a significant part of the problem. It's not like you're going to see thousands of them clogging up the daily commute.
We need to focus on the big picture - energy production, mass transit vehicles, everyday cars, manufacturing, etc. A few enthusiasts driving high performance vehicles is not the problem. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Anyone know what car Steve Jobs drives? Or does he ride in a segway?
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7in automotive gruesomeness, Bill and Paul were actually willing to buy one and import it JUST TO PASS THE CRASH TEST... i.e pay to crash it. Fortunately, it got a stay, but Bill takes it pretty seriously!!
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8n/m...saw somewhere that it isn't crash rated... don't really see a way to get around that one when they only made 280 of them : /
Oh well...I'd drive it anyway, it isn't like he couldn't pay for any fines he got. - egrumling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yep. God forbid (substitute your favorite Deity or belief system here) someone enjoy what we have on the earth. No, we must all run around in hemp clothing and give up all our belongings just to "equalize" everyone.
Meanwhile, the folks in China are more than happy to have access to 2 cycle engines that are far less efficient than Mr. Gates' 959 and are going to destroy their local air. How about the farmers who are burning dung for fuel? Don't they contribute to the global CO totals as well? Perhaps more so, since most of what they are burning is carbon? Maybe lawyers and environmentalists know that poor folks don't have any money, and beating up on them won't sell many t-shirts. Besides, everyone KNOWS that one huge smokestack is pumping out far more pollution than every little fire burning in Africa, right?
Ever see a picture of Pittsburgh from the last century? http://tinyurl.com/y9qo35. I think we have made great strides (at a great cost) in the US. We still have more to do, but we can't just make the US like Europe or the mega cities of the far east overnight. We're just too darn spread out, in part due to our success (and the Louisiana purchase). We can afford expensive transportation systems, and so we use them.
Environmental concern is for the rich, not the poor. - mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6consider the amount of money he personally spent to get an exception to the law for "exotic" sportscars in the first place, any emissions restrictions additional would be easy to pay for. The restrictions he "loosened" require the cars to be under 20,000 made..or less... all over, not just imported... it's a fairly tight restriction to get non-FTC approved autos into the country and they still have to undergo some emissions surgery before he can drive them. We're talking a markets of maybe 1000-2000 cars total in the entire country that fall under that exemption, all very expensive and with very expensive legal overhead. I doubt they'd take it away...it costs nearly as much as the auto to go thru all the hoops... we're talking $50K + sales taxes!!!
- i64X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Tuner rice wagons" are usually only the result of added weight from body kits, vinyl, and park bench wings... I'd be willing to bet 90% of them still get over 30 mpgs.
Tasteless? Yes.
Any more polluting than any non-riced small car? No. - davidjunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This is rediculous. What next? Start forcing people with classic cars to park 'em for good since they're not up to today's emission standards?
Are there really that many people running around with these specialty vehicles that it's hurting the environment? (rolling my eyes) - NuttySquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Can it please be noted the governor of Washington is Christine Gregoire, not Chris, and is in fact, a woman. Thanks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Usually a car that 15 years or older is classified as a classic car and is therefore exempt of crash testing or strict emission laws.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@freaktrap
You're impartial to it? Then why mention it! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5screw porsches, get me a harrier jump jet
- Xcoded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He's had Porsches (read about it somewhere), he was also seen arriving at MacWorld Expo last year aboard a Mercedes SL-55 AMG
- there, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5
So what do you recommend. Two sets of laws one for the rich one for the poor? - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm sure he has more than one car... this one just happens to be involved in the environmental crackdown.
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What's not street legal about it? If it's just the emissions all he'd need to do is put a legal exhaust system on it. No reason for his "Porsche driving days" to come to an end.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nicstevens42:
I think a lot people are just confused since your state actually elected a male governor and then the election was stolen through "recounts" and ballot boxes full of votes just miraculously appearing out of thin air. - chongli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Steve Jobs flies around in a helicopter or his Gulfstream V (for longer trips).
He doesn't need cars. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mechanic: "Mr. Gates we found several holes within your cars frame.. which left alot of bugs get through"
Gates: "AHHAHA!!.... Can you fix them?"
Mechanic: "Ummm... maybe... we'll try in increments of weekly Service Packs to your car" - bjorkbjorkbjork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A news item a few years ago, when Jobs was hosting his buddy Bill as he visited his daughter at Stanford, indicated that he liked to drive around Palo Alto in a Mercedes S-Class without any license plates. Jobs joked with (bragged to?) Clinton that his car's plateless condition allowed him to park anywhere without getting any parking tickets.
- yuravian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@omghi2u2:
"In fact, nobody should be allowed a car that gets worse MPG than your car (which is probably a Yugo, which is why you are so bitter)"
You're right, my Mustang is such a horrible car. Only 23-28 MPG by my calculations using the trip odometer + how much gas I buy.
If you'd care to do some research, you'd see that most of the big auto makers are leaning towards making cars that are fuel efficient... and 20 MPG isn't all that high, considering my dad owns a classic roadster ('57 Porsche Speedster replicar with a '62 or so VW engine) that easily gets 25 MPG (although it is small.) Car makers have been leaning towards 20+MPG for a long time now, especially with gas prices being what they are.... the (intelligent) consumer is demanding cars that get a good amount of mileage. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He should call the MotoRex guys. I hear they've got some ways around the federal regs ;)
- NaughtyBookWorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@omghi2u2
I'm not really sure why you'd think it would be an insult for someone to own any car that has good gas mileage, but your list looks like a reasonable place to start banning things to me. But why ban them to begin with? Why not have the car industry start using modern technology? The technology to make these cars more fuel efficient exists, and has for some time. There is no reason why a car today should get less that 20mpg. If someone is a city dweller who doesn't tow anything and drives on flat streets everyday, then he or she doesn't need a damn Hemi engine or a Hummer with a snorkel and brush guards on the front. There's also no reason why one person should own a gigantic SUV, truck, or other low efficiency vehicle unless they have a good, valid reason (ie: business/farming purposes, large family to transport, etc).
What would you rather have? The freedom to drive a ridiculously huge Hummer that you don't really need to actually transport yourself to and from places in your average daily life or the ability to breathe cleaner air? - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mercedes of some sort, believe an S Class? Saw him some years ago in Palo Alto.

I think you mean a green 1991 Ford Taurus SHO

Cheers. - egrumling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@i64X
I always thought the real tuner car guys equipped them with superchargers, chips, modded exhausts, NO2 and bored out the engines. However, I was too old whenever that all got started, so maybe it is just extensions on the tailpipe. - Hubris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He should just check through his spare change.....his wife might be watching the main bank balance, but nobody watches the quarter jar. His quarter jar just happens to contain thousand dollar bills....Save up for a few months and build a local version of Nurburgring.
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FTA: "What he really wants is his own racing track, but I'm not sure Melinda would go for that."
And why the hell NOT? - stoppedcode12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that's a pretty weak excuse bill.
- spootwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So because most pollution comes from factories you don't matter? That's not the way the world works. However if you shout loud enough and keep interrupting you can always get the final say...but that does not make you right.
