DUBYA: Wait, what did you just say? You're predicting 4-dollar-a-gallon
gasoline?
REPORTER: A number of analysts are predicting -
DUBYA: Oh, yeah?
REPORTER: Four-dollar-a-gallon gasoline this spring when they reformulate.
DUBYA: That's interesting. I hadn't heard that.
REPORTER: Yes, sir. - aoasus, on 03/26/2008, -7/+84If you're stupid enough to...
1) Drive out to the middle of NoWhere California with an empty tank
2) Pull up to the Full Service pump
3) Use premium gas
4) Buy more than a gallon or two to get you to a more reasonable priced station
Then you deserve to pay. - Stonecipher26, on 03/26/2008, -1/+70Ten bucks? What am I gonna do with that? Buy a gallon and a half of gas?
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/26/2008, -2/+64California is big, peeps, there are lots of isolated towns with one gas station in them. There used to be a lot more.

- PopcornDave, on 03/26/2008, -4/+29Nice try. This is a little ***** station in the middle of nowhere. NBC11 saying this is south of San Francisco is geographically correct, as is saying Los Angeles is south of San Francisco. This station is located about 40-50 miles south of Monterey down on Highway 1 and is the only show in town. Everything is trucked in and it all costs more than anywhere else, but NBC in their quest to drive ratings to their news channel have pimped this exact same story for the second time in two weeks.
I hate to disappoint everyone, but the average price for gas in San Francisco proper is about $3.75 for regular and you can find it for about $3.50 in San Jose ( which is south of San Francisco ). Doesn't mean it doesn't completely suck, but NBC is trying to mislead the public by making it seem that all of California is paying this much for gas.
There was a similar situation in a desert town in Southern California about 25 years ago where gas was $3.00 a gallon, but it was the only station for about 100 miles. So if you didn't plan ahead, you payed the asking price. Same situation here, nothing more. - FatLoser, on 03/26/2008, -4/+29I got laid off today. But on the bright side, I finally got laid.
- teqonix, on 03/26/2008, -4/+27Difference between what they pay and what we pay is that they pay a much much larger chunk of taxes to the government to support their healthcare systems and whatnot. Here, part of it goes to the government through taxes while a very large chunk goes to the oil companies. Record profits, indeed.
- aakrzemi08, on 03/26/2008, -1/+19Pretty much everything I read on the Internet makes me cry.
- wes00mertes, on 03/26/2008, -2/+19All the money caught on fire?
- studdenfadden, on 03/26/2008, -7/+24In Düsseldorf we pay €1.47 a Litre, which works out to: $9.16 USD a Gallon. America is catching up to the rest of the world in price. If you are hurting at $5.40, wait till it hits $9.16! Then you will know my joy :)

This is why you pay so little. - Haroshia, on 03/26/2008, -0/+15Dear Rest of the World,
We realize your gas is more expensive. We also realize that a large portion of the cost of your gas, and everything else, is taxed. We know that those taxes go to provide you with government subsidized higher education, health care, public transportation, and many other things.
In the USA, we have none of those things. We need to pay out of pocket for higher education and health care. Many cities have barely functional public transportation, and with our job market being crap, many of us live 20-30 miles away from where we work. Please understand that our gas prices may be low compared to yours, but our total cost of living is very high. Any big hike in gas prices forces us into a situation where we need to choose between say...health insurance, or getting to our jobs. Please quit coming to these threads and assuming we are whining for no reason.
Perhaps someday our government will get its head out of its ass, and realize that a little socialization is not a bad thing. Until then, realize that many of the things you take for granted we simply do not have, and therefore you coming in here and thumbing your nose at us actually makes you look like a pretentious twatwaffle.
Thank You,
United States of America. - JasonMath, on 03/26/2008, -0/+14And that's exactly why Europeans are more fuel-efficient.
- studdenfadden, on 03/26/2008, -1/+15do you really commute from Florida to Washington state everyday? In Germany the average commute to work takes about 30 minutes, i'd guess it is much the same in America.
As for the second part of your comment, the EU is the largest economy in the world and we are on a tear right now. The more your economy stinks, the better we do. - studdenfadden, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12Yeah, it actually works out like this €1.47=$2.30 1gallon=3.8 L So, In Germany we are paying $8.74 per gallon.
I did the first calculation in my head using a guesstimate of the USD. - form3hide, on 03/26/2008, -1/+13right, we do. but our salary doesn't go up when gas prices go up.

- bxblox, on 03/26/2008, -0/+11The difference is we'll be paying the same price without the benefit of the tax money.

- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+10Lol, that was great the first time I saw it. You gotta love the way he handled that; he responded, without actually responding!
That's like something a child would do. "Son, your Algebra teacher called; she says you'll probably fail this semester because you're not turning your work in." "That's interesting, Dad. I hadn't heard that." It's a tactic that allows you to respond while at the same time completely avoiding the issue. - kevinwiz, on 03/26/2008, -1/+11"The gas station's owner said one customer told him to go to hell and another said he should be shot for charging that much for gas."
basic law of supply and demand. customers should expect to be raped in the middle of nowhere with no competition. - tightscrummy, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10Versus here where the cost added to the production cost is just profit for the oil companies. At least they get nice things for their extra money.

- RadiatedAnt, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8Full service? they still do that?!
- Krissam, on 03/26/2008, -3/+11Yea, looking out the window right now, i can see a gas station charging 10.75Dkr / liter, even tho that's pretty high even for danish standards that's still almost $8.5/gallon, so those americans should stop
- bxblox, on 03/26/2008, -1/+9I dont think bush has ever had to pump gas. The same as donald trump says he's never used an atm. Out of sight, out of mind.. he doesnt give a *****.
- theutopian, on 03/26/2008, -2/+10When it starts to cost $50 to fill up my little fuel efficient Honda Fit with a 10 gallon tank, I'll die a little inside.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8you got ripped off
- Vzylexy, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7Here in Oregon you can't pump your own gas.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8Nothing new, there is a station in Kings Canyon that has been over five bucks for a decade.
It still has those old pumps with the glass jars......... - ackermannc, on 03/26/2008, -2/+9At least Spitzer combined both into one package. Just that he did it backwards.
- welshie, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7To fill up your little fuel efficient Honda Fit here (UK) would cost you about $81. Congratulations to you for choosing a fuel efficient vehicle. The sooner everyone else who is driving around in 3 ton tanks realizes that crude oil won't last forever, and it will only ever get more expensive as its cost to find and extract goes up, the better.
- bxblox, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7Someone should open a gas station across the street.
