Gasoline Sticker Shock in California: $5.40 A Gallon
nbc11.com — If you think you're paying a hefty price at the pump, wait until you see the gas station in the city of Gorda, south of San Francisco. That's where a gas station is charging what just might be the most expensive gas in the country.

- PopcornDave, on 03/26/2008, -4/+29Nice try. This is a little ***** station in the middle of nowhere. NBC11 saying this is south of San Francisco is geographically correct, as is saying Los Angeles is south of San Francisco. This station is located about 40-50 miles south of Monterey down on Highway 1 and is the only show in town. Everything is trucked in and it all costs more than anywhere else, but NBC in their quest to drive ratings to their news channel have pimped this exact same story for the second time in two weeks.
I hate to disappoint everyone, but the average price for gas in San Francisco proper is about $3.75 for regular and you can find it for about $3.50 in San Jose ( which is south of San Francisco ). Doesn't mean it doesn't completely suck, but NBC is trying to mislead the public by making it seem that all of California is paying this much for gas.
There was a similar situation in a desert town in Southern California about 25 years ago where gas was $3.00 a gallon, but it was the only station for about 100 miles. So if you didn't plan ahead, you payed the asking price. Same situation here, nothing more.- Dustmuffins, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Diesel in my area is actually hovering around $4.20, not fun considering the big 18 mpg 4x4 truck we have to drive just to get out of our backwoods driveway.
- thallium205, on 03/26/2008, -7/+8Hey California liberals.. maybe if your gas tax wasn't the highest in the nation you would pull your head out of your asses and see that its your local government oppressing you...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_tax#United_State ...- zeusthemoose, on 03/26/2008, -2/+5Well if you would prefer income tax increases on the rich to pay for all the infrastructure that the gas tax was paying for, I am sure they will be happy to oblige :).
- geauxtig3rs, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1I love how people always complain the rich arent being taxed enough when the highest income bracket ahs taxes in the order of 39% of total income in the state of california, if the bush taxcuts are gone, it jumps to 45%......confiscatory tax rates are a disincentive to production and will stagnate an already slowing economy when businesses and investors have incentive to base their operations in states (by states I mean geopolitical entities, not he Narrow american view of states {which are really provinces}) that are more friendly to businesses....liberals, wake up, you cant have your cake and eat it too. You can either have the economic stimulus that the wealthy provide (without the wealthy, most of you would NOT have jobs) r you can have an all-pervasive governemnt infrastructure that holds everyone's hand through everything. That may work in a small socialist state, however it will not work in a large nation, as the sheer amount of physical area would be overwhelming for any sort of pervasive infrastructure, and it would collapse udner the own weight of it's beuracracy.
- PopcornDave, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Thallum, the problem is going to be when due to people driving less there's less gas tax money and the state is going to have to make up that revenue somehow.
- AlexWills, on 03/26/2008, -8/+6A gas station in liberal country California has gas over 2 dollars higher than the national average and it's somehow Bush's fault? No, it's gas being taxed to death.
- zeusthemoose, on 03/26/2008, -4/+3Nice conspiracy theory.
- PopcornDave, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Not really, we're paying about 50 cents in federal and state taxes plus sales tax on top of that.

This is why you pay so little.- Nth3nSum, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2It would be nice if roads were paid for with gas tax. So that those that don't drive don't get taxed for it.

- JasonMath, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2Actually, gas is still less than a $1/gallon in Venezuela and some other countries. Then again, those countries are large oil producers, and most (if not all of them) belong to OPEC. On the other hand, gas prices above $6/gallon are very common in Europe and Japan.
- DeathJux, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3Well, right now in Christchurch, NZ, gas goes for ~$1.77 NZD a liter. 1 Gallon = 3.8 Liters, so $6.73 NZD/gal, which is $5.34 USD/gallon. Pretty equal, to Californian standards.
In London, though, gas was ~£1.50 a liter. Same calculations, ~£5.70/gal, which is $11.29 USD/gallon. Madness, comparatively.- AllenHSmilden, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2standard? Right now in California its hovering at ~$3.60

- Krissam, on 03/26/2008, -3/+11Yea, looking out the window right now, i can see a gas station charging 10.75Dkr / liter, even tho that's pretty high even for danish standards that's still almost $8.5/gallon, so those americans should stop
- 42Vindictive, on 03/26/2008, -0/+21.46 a litre (5.40 a gal) is pretty much equal with what our Canadian gas station charges for self-service premium.
- AmnioticEntity, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1i want an octane comparison chart, also, how much ethinol is in other countries gas? a simple $/gallon comparison is not enough to justify how gas is priced. my father told me that in the 70's and 80's it was normal to find 100+ octane at the pumps. why can i not find anything above 91 now?
- theculchie1, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You guys rate it by MON the rest of the world rates it by RON to add to the confusion.
The lowest rating you guys use by and large is regular (87MON) which works out at about 91-92 RON over here.
By and large the lowest we get in europe is super unleaded which is 95RON or about 90/91 in your language. Right now ijn Ireland we can get unleaded in the form of a 5% bioethanol mix which is 99.9Ron or about 95MON.
By and large most cars don't care what octane rating the petrol is.
- theculchie1, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You guys rate it by MON the rest of the world rates it by RON to add to the confusion.
- Haroshia, on 03/26/2008, -0/+15Dear Rest of the World,
We realize your gas is more expensive. We also realize that a large portion of the cost of your gas, and everything else, is taxed. We know that those taxes go to provide you with government subsidized higher education, health care, public transportation, and many other things.
In the USA, we have none of those things. We need to pay out of pocket for higher education and health care. Many cities have barely functional public transportation, and with our job market being crap, many of us live 20-30 miles away from where we work. Please understand that our gas prices may be low compared to yours, but our total cost of living is very high. Any big hike in gas prices forces us into a situation where we need to choose between say...health insurance, or getting to our jobs. Please quit coming to these threads and assuming we are whining for no reason.
Perhaps someday our government will get its head out of its ass, and realize that a little socialization is not a bad thing. Until then, realize that many of the things you take for granted we simply do not have, and therefore you coming in here and thumbing your nose at us actually makes you look like a pretentious twatwaffle.
Thank You,
United States of America.- DeskFlyer, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Best comment of the day.

my vehicle is a heavily modified 2.0liter 4-cylinder, running a turbo charger at around 20lbs of boost...
anything lower than 93 octane and my engine could ping and detonate itself to melt down.
FYI: putting 87 octane into your new VW, etc.. is going to ultimately result in burnt exhaust valves, aggressive engine wear, detonation, and far less efficient performance.- aoasus, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I understand that... but it's your choice.
What would be stupid would for you to complain about the cost of Gas (but you don't seem to be doing so).

If you want to pay less, drive a more reasonable vehicle. It's pretty darn simple.

- zacharytelschow, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1Woohoo for them. They also have a much higher population density. Trains through Nebraska aren't seeing many passengers.
- Pittance, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Exactly. Public transport works very well in Chicago, DC, Boston, New York, etc. But out where cities have much more land to spread out, it would just take too long. And not everyone is going to the same place.
- URnotheonly1, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1so why all the high gas prices with this 35 years of conservation and public transportation?
- zacharytelschow, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1I think that was very clear from the responses above. In regards to public transportation, the vast majority of the country simply lacks the population density to make public transit worthwhile; it wouldn't be cost effective. As far as the high gas prices, currently it's simply a matter of supply meets demand. We haven't come up with a better solution to replace gas yet because the reality is, even with prices as high as they are, no one can do it cheaper (or even at a marginal price premium).
- URnotheonly1, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1so why all the high gas prices with this 35 years of conservation and public transportation?

Katrina took 20% of US production off line for a little bit so no problem there. Refineries transition to gas from heating oil is done. Inventories are relatively stable so thats not a problem.

- beerden, on 03/26/2008, -1/+0Yes, the gouging here is maddening, isn't it? Especially when the government does nothing to stop it because the oil companies say it's only supply and demand that's driving the prices, so it's not gouging. Yeah, right.
- girlpirate, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1having worked in gas stations for several years I would have to call it gouging when I personally changed the prices from .89 to .96 and back down to .87 all in less than 8 hours. The whole system is screwed. I worked for both SuperSave and Husky. Both stations would send us out everyday to canvas the neighborhood prices then we'd have to call the other locations within town and see what the prices in their area were and change our prices accordingly. You'd think that if the prices were'nt arbitrary that they would be more consistent and have a better system for pricing.

- john1, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Yep, I was in the same situation there about 8 years ago. I had slightly more gas that you though - the price shock was enough to make me carry on to the next station - arrived there on fumes, but felt good for it :)

- OutLawSuit, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1If I recall Gorda is near Big Sur which has some of the strictest zoning laws in the country. The reason there is only one gas station is due to zoning laws where another one can't even be built which causes a monopoly like this. No new construction is allowed that is visible from highway to preserve the natural beauty of the area, not to mention the highway is wedged between some mountains and cliffs over looking the ocean so there's not a lot of places to build anyway.
- Metasquares, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1Be thankful there's still sticker shock at that price.

- AladinSane, on 03/26/2008, -13/+7Europeans have apparently never looked at a map or a globe. Here's a tip: America is roughly 50 times bigger than Germany. That means we have to drive farther to deliver goods across the nation. And if you think you're hurting NOW, just wait until America is paying 9 bucks a gallon... because like it or not, the world economy is tied to our ass. You'll see a global recession the likes of which you've never dreamed.
- studdenfadden, on 03/26/2008, -1/+15do you really commute from Florida to Washington state everyday? In Germany the average commute to work takes about 30 minutes, i'd guess it is much the same in America.
As for the second part of your comment, the EU is the largest economy in the world and we are on a tear right now. The more your economy stinks, the better we do. - KMartSheriff, on 03/26/2008, -8/+2I don't know why you're getting dugg down when you're 100% right.
- prophetpimp, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7He is not. Even in the EU good have to travel the same distance because it acts as a single economic zone with no borders and The average commute time for a European is the same as an American.
- WoollyMittens, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6Dude... there's more to Europe than Germany. Are you implying there's not road transport between countries? European countries are like your states. there's very little difference, except we don't even get to vote on the European leadership.
- Hangly, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I think he means that most US cities are based around cars (which is true,) where most big European cities have some sort of mass transit.
High gas prices hurt more when you have no other choice but to drive.

- tightscrummy, on 03/26/2008, -1/+10Versus here where the cost added to the production cost is just profit for the oil companies. At least they get nice things for their extra money.

- HyperionCC, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Dugg for great justice. At least when the Europeans are paying exuberant prices that is due to the tax on the fuel. Soon we will be paying the same thing with no benefit to the government/people.

- kgmurray, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2It is a unit used in about two third-world backwaters. In a country that is lucky to teach its citizens to find themselves on a map, don't expect them to be able to teach the metric system. Its soooooo complicated to learn.
- uziko, on 03/26/2008, -2/+2Wait they are in the middle of nowhere, are the only gas station around, and they are charging 5.00 per gallon of gas? What kind of idiot runs that operation. If they have no competition and people will run out of gas if don't get some they could charge a lot more. How much depends on how bad people want to travel on that road. They could probably go up $50.00 a gallon before people refuse to use that road.
- zacharytelschow, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1They could definitely raise prices more. It mentions in the article he was sold out of some types of gas.
- mike17032, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8Well they must figure if idiots out there are stupid enough to pay a million bucks for a house the size of most garages, they will happily pay that much for gas.

- VicFerrari, on 03/26/2008, -5/+3i would have to say people who drive SUV's with bad gas mileage are tools, i drive my parents '92 LS400 and it gets like 14mpg, i only drive city mostly cause i work at home, and my parents '07 BMW X5 get around 17mpg, that's why i am hoping to get the 335i coupe, but that's another story
- melat0nin, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Presumably you're calling yourself a tool, because 14 and 17 mpg is horrendously low?
- anoneng, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0my car gets at least twice that. i fill it up like once a month too, cuz ill walk places and car pool on top of having good gas mileage.
that right there is why suv owners are tools.
- Pittance, on 03/26/2008, -0/+217mpg is horrendously low, yes. People who drive 50mi a day to work with an SUV/truck with only themselves are idiots. And they block my view of the road in front of them from my efficient civic. Oh, and people who drive Prius's are tools as well.
