- PurpZeY, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Sort of like old bread...It really doesn't taste that bad but it's still stale.

Looks real enough to me.. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Corvette
Its real... for one, ive read the story before, that had a picture of the plane in that position with people all around and construction equipment preparing to remove the plane.
As for the sign, look closer, though the planes are both angled from the TR to the BL ... on both sides...but the arrows are different...and its not just flipped, the text is still right. Someone could have photoshopped it, yeah, but not likely. Also, its at a T intersection, so it would make sense to make the sign visible from both sides...
The crash itself...bad luck and a little bad piloting, he was without power...but there was enough field on either side and a road he could have put down on... then again... if there is a single tree in a field, for some reason, people seem to hit it (car, motorcycle, rc aircraft ... Im personally familiar with the latter)
Good pic though, and even better because the pilot made it out. - po43292, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10it's not that old, what 2 days now? I love that the circled R is synonymous with Adobe now.
crap, accidental comment here... - GTPilot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8too bad you can't even fly airplanes solo at 14.

NTSB Identification: NYC93LA094 .
The docket is stored on NTSB microfiche number 50937.
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Wednesday, April 28, 1993 in E STROUDSBURG, PA
Probable Cause Approval Date: 11/19/1993
Aircraft: STEVEN KURTIS RAND S 12, registration: N6784J
Injuries: 2 Minor.
SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF AT AN APPROXIMATE ALTITUDE OF 100 TO 150 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND THE ENGINE LOST POWER. THE PILOT TURNED THE AIRPLANE 180 DEGREES IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE IT BACK TO THE AIRPORT BUT COLLIDED WITH TREES DURING THE FORCED LANDING. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE BY A MECHANIC AFTER THE ACCIDENT REVEALED NO DISCREPANCIES. THE BUILDER OF THE AIRPLANE SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN MECHANICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH THE ENGINE PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT, AND THE MECHANIC THAT HAD WORKED ON THE ENGINE SAID THAT THEY WERE CORRECTED AND THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS 'OKAY' TO FLY.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
A FORCED LANDING IN TREES AS A RESULT OF A COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. - dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The crash caused the power to go out for about 100 homes in the area."
Where can I get one o' them electric power trees? - superyounan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5this would fit nicely in a picture section :)
- celchu33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It's not really a note to self if you're telling all of us.
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7dude survived with only minor injuries, therefore not tragic, but hilarious
- reqage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You never know what is going to happen when operating a plane. I almost wrecked due to a group of turkeys that ran across a short grass strip runway. Making a decision to stop or take off with half the runway left is a tough decision. I ended up deciding to take off and they got out of the way. I cleared the trees by about 25' and you are suppose to clear them by at least 50'.
Half of my training was in Daytona Beach airspace, where there is a ton of aviation schools. The airspace around there isn't very accommodating due to the fact that everything is restricted. NASA is south and there is a no fly zone west leaving only the north to practice in. There were a lot of occasions where planes got to close to one another. I had a guy descend while coming at us. He actually made us change course. You always have to keep your eye out for everything. - FlyFastLiveSlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No plane crash I have witnessed has been funny. It's really easy to laugh at that picture with the sign in front of the wreckage, however it probably wasn't too funny in real life. He should have followed the basic rules: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate. If he had full power loss at traffic pattern altitude, he should have pitched for best glide speed, gone through the emergency landing checklist, and landed at his chosen point.
- flygirl62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And the plane in that picture, FYI, is a 4-seater.
(If it's a Cherokee 140, it can hardly hold more than 2 people, though. But a 160 or a 180 can hold 4 depending on the amount of fuel it has) - a911now, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Thats in falcon colorado like 1 mile from my house at medow lake airport

:) - Sepeteus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Crashing in to a tree with an airplane looks much safer than crashing in to a tree with a car.

funny pic though. - flygirl62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@useraccess, it's called "pilot talk" :-)
@FlyFastLiveSlow, agreed. My instructor once told me that you should *always* be able to make the runway from within the patern. If you can't, you're flying your pattern too wide.
That said, we all make mistakes, and I *know* there have been times when I would NOT have made the runway if my engine quit. - urtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dont see how a plane crash is funny.
- FlyFastLiveSlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@useraccess - It should be as simple as that if you are up by yourself. If you are up by yourself, it means (at the very least) that your flight instructor has checked off your performance and has enough confidence in you to at least make a few trips around the pattern (the way airplanes move in the air around the airport) for some touch and goes.
@flygirl62 - I agree that you should always be able to make the runway from the pattern.. but crazier things have happened. Just follow your training (something along the lines of): pitch for best glide speed, pick your landing point, do your emergency landing checklist, mayday, mayday, mayday, and prepare for landing. A long time ago, I had an engine failure turning final in a P/A-28 @ KIWA (Williams-Gateway, Arizona). Luckily enough I was high and fast on this approach, so I just floated down to ground effect along the 10,000 ft.+ runway. Ah, great memories. Anyways, safe flying! - thecompkid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I. Like. To. Use. Periods. Too. But. If. You. Don't. Stop. I'm. Going. To. Puncture. You. With. A. Red. Hot. Soldering. Iron. Period.

but can you land the chopper? - schavira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a Simpsons quote. You're digging down "Duffless"? Jeez, harsh critics.
- Ryar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Enough with the stupid titles already.
Every time I see the word "Ever" in a title, it makes me shutter. Add in some superfluous periods and I want to start taking people out! Who decided that this was clever? - harrier666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dunno about not funny. There is a guy here that has now managed to gear up his plane THREE times... Count em. I witnessed the third. Each time after the first, he fixed his plane and the first test flight out, he did it again. He's fine, he walked away, but that's some funny stuff. Guy shouldn't be flying at all, and if him working on his bird in a hangar keeps him off my runway, I'll laugh the whole way.
- harrier666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, and any landing you can walk away from is a successful one right! Seriously, we've all made dumb mistakes. It's all a chain of errors that if you break early enough, you live. This guy may have done some dumb stuff, but really, he walked way, the aircraft may or may not be salvageable (I've seen worse looking crashes with an aircraft that lived to fly again), and we all get to chair fly and point out all his mistakes. If that ain't what piloting is all about, I dunno what is.
- AKremlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How is it old if the crash occured in December last year?
- wesjanson2307, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kinda reminds me of Harry Potter...
- harrier666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And the turn back to the runway was either a result of a bad instructor or a stupid student. As an instructor, I vote for the latter. I've seen a few pilots in this here comment section. Kids, for the love of god, or flying, or bunnies, 150' is NOT enough to turn back to the runway. Land straight ahead. This guy was lucky to walk away. And likely, if the engine failed that soon after takeoff, he possibly (probably) didn't do a proper runup. Knowing that the engine may still have issues, and just came out of maintenance, a very thorough runup is absolutely imperative. If he had, the issue probably would have become readily apparent on the ground.
However, thanks to him, we have a damn funny pic. Whatever works. - dahitman2389, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5He's flyin' in ur base, *****' ur trees!
- dbc29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There are certain topics that are off limits to comedians: JFK, [airplane crashes], the Holocaust. The Lincoln assassination just recently because funny-I need to see this play like I need a hole in the head. And I hope to someday live in a world where a person could tell a hilarious [airplane crash] joke. Still one of my dreams."
- hratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is real. That airfield is about 20 minutes from my house in Colorado Springs. It is very ironic, however real.
