- Revan01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+83Still awesome, who knew modern medicine could be outdone by a swift kick to the head?
- priceless721, on 10/12/2007, -16/+85thats a cool story and everything but really was a bit too over-the-top preachy with the whole miracles happen when you least suspect it stuff.
Great story.
Poor writing. - thebaron2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40So eyesight works kind of like my crappy TV?
When things get fuzzy and out-of-whack.... BLAM! Smack that sucker as hard as possible and presto!
The magic of modern medicine :D - livejamie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39this is why i punch anybody i see wearing an eyepatch
- ths453, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Poor writing is what i was thinking half way through. I thought it was going to end with "Now send this story to ten people within the next 30 minutes or you will be blind in your right eye".
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33So if he was only blind in one eye, it was just half a miracle.
- BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29"Oh my god, her eyes aren't crossed anymore!"
"Yeah, how about that? She falls down a well her eyes go crossed, she gets kicked in the ass by a mule and they go back to normal. I dunno!"
-Nation Lampoons Christmas Vacation - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30I hated the fact they moved in with all the messages before they'd actually said he had his sight back. I'd have much rather had a medical explanation or a quote from a doctor. Agreed, great story, awful writing. Dugg regardless
- krellor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27not blind. He could still see out of his left eye.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26FTA>>>"Just three years ago, doctors told him that even with all the modern medical advances, he would never see in his right eye."
The real moral of this story is: "Get better doctors." It doesn't say why he was actually blind in that eye, but if an impact trauma could bring it back, then some minor surgery would have most likely been able to do the same. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -14/+37Yeah they get a little 'touchy-feely' with the whole thing...
Was blind.
Got hit.
Eyesight restored.
'nuff said. - scotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22who knows, the brain is such a weird thing. there's still so much not known about how the brain works and processes things like sight, language etc. that it's totally believable that random trauma could fix things when advanced surgery could not. just goes to show how much more we have to learn about the way we work.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16i mean, if it works for a NES...
- nothing7899, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Boot to the head!"
oh... come on! who doesn't love the Ti Kwan Leap skit?
http://beagleweb.com/fun-taekwanleap.html - cam0man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm pretty sure 'believing in himself' didn't bring back the sight, it was a head bunt.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I was going to make a joke about ill kids, but I decided it might be in a little bad taste
- demnos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Man, that works with so many things. Just give 'em a good whack and all is well again (for a little while anyway).
- Thunderrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10He never saw that one coming!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Stop anthropomorphizing!
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I kindof want to know what exactly was wrong with his eye to begine with??? I understand he went blind in one eye... but what was the technical term to describe it? Severed optical nerve? or what?
Still great story! almost seems like the horse knew what was wrong... but thats probably giving too much credit to the horse.
Although I hope the old-timer is careful... another blow to the head could kill his sight again... like a loose wire in a TV remote, works if u hit it, breaks again if u hit it again... you never know.
I wish the best of luck to him. - minorthreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I bet he wishes he was head butted say oh.... 63 years ago
- Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The lesson here is clear:
If you really care about blind people, HIT THEM AS HARD AS YOU CAN. - szembek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I really wish they could have elaborated on the details of his condition and how it might have been restored by a punch to the face.
- mjar81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6lol, yeah, i saw the title and immediately thought someone regained their eyesight from a Nintendo Wii accident... like the Wiimote hit them in the head or something.
- kuj007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@nothing7899
mad props for the Frantics reference, however I'm thinking that a majority of the Diggsters out there are too young to remember it :)
"You are lucky Ed Gruberman. Few novices experience so much of Ti Kwan Leep so soon." - ersatzphi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Does this mean we should start randomly punching the blind and deaf? I mean, it would all be with good intention right? Cmon say yes.......
- dixonHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@wvannus: Percussive Maintenance
- tmesis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The optic nerve was probably displaced or dislodged (possibly by a hematoma) during WW II and the trauma from the horse probably restored it to its original location.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4his brain had a stuck pixel
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I didn't like the implication of a miracle. If they had REMOVED the eye and his sight was restored...I'd say that is likely a miracle. This was only improbable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Cool story. I wonder if the "dormant" eye has changed at all since it hasn't been used for the past six decades. I would think not, since the problem doesn't appear to be with the eyeball itself, but I couldn't tell ya.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Big ups for the C-Vacation quote.
- guardsman85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting, but it reads like a high school Intro to Writing paper.
- fety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Huh?
- GDunck, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Maybe before he was blind dumb ass?
- molsen311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the entire article wreaks of improper journalism: lack of facts, improper usage of labels (e.g. "old man"), etc. As a journalism student, it's hard to take a writer seriously if they can't at least get the basics of AP style correct, let alone offer up some facts to support such an outrageous claim.
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, Otto has a point here. It doesn't take a genius to know that one man's professional opinion is never enough to make good decisions, and if you have the time and money, it could be worth it to get a second opinion.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not if it's served with a nice glass of Chianti
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Pictures, focused through the retina of his bad eye, or it didn't happen.
:P - Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about this guy that shot himself in the head and cured his OCD?
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=940DE3DB123CF93BA35750C0A96E948260 - LeetPCUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very cool story. I like reading success stories like this.
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah- not to mention that the vision center of the brain is at the BACK of your head. Maybe there was something impinging on the optic nerve behind the eye that had softened with age, and then all of a sudden- BOOM! Free in clear. Of course that is just speculation based upon where he was hit to fix the problem. I suppose the back of his head could've hit the ground.
Anyway- touching story...I just with they would've had some explanation about the nature of the damage that was keeping him blind. If they told him he'd never see again, they had to have an idea of what part was broken and how badly. - Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Last March I lost some of the vision in my right eye when I was diagnosed with MS. I wonder... where's the nearest race track?
- Schug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I anticipate receiving this exact story 7 times a day in my inbox for the next 2 years.
- wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't there a name for that process of striking electronics to fix them?
- Maynza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it works for my electronics why wouldn't it work for me?
- Avogadro65, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You must be a ninja.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A horse can do what medical science has never been able to do!
- ServAce85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is kind of like when your TV doesnt work and you just hit it on the side really really hard and it starts working again. Well, that is, if it was made in the USA.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet it has gone through the exact same thing as the other eye. Things in the body don't stay perfect forever...they age even if they aren't being used.
