- Chakz, on 06/10/2009, -6/+271To be fair, the cyclist was balanced.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -14/+211When asked how a Central Park cyclist ended up being dragged for four blocks on the hood of his SUV, the driver, a Fox News writer, calls the cyclist a "vigilante."
Being from fox you would have tought he would have called him a terrorist. - fragMasterFlash, on 06/10/2009, -12/+154Vehicular assault is no laughing matter, this nutjob needs to be locked up for a few years.
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -23/+164Okay I guess I'm going to be unpopular, but....so the guy happened to work for fox news. Its not like fox news execs ordered him to "run over those bike riding hippies". Just a coincidence and probably not newsworthy.
- terencec, on 06/10/2009, -29/+134seriously... why the hell is Fox News still in business? Hell the Onion is more accurate than those guys if you get the sarcasm
- mejf2loy, on 06/10/2009, -23/+99Is everyone a nut job at Fox news?
- RicardoWilliams, on 06/09/2009, -1/+60a vigilante? HA! New York is full of those
- allisonaxe, on 06/10/2009, -1/+52also from the comments in the article: this was in Central Park, which has one-way streets, with a speed limit of 25 mph (what the biker was allegedly riding at) and the bike lanes are on the left side. the cars being held up behind him were driving, essentially, in the lane that was set aside for cyclists.
- mejf2loy, on 06/10/2009, -10/+60Agreed, this individuals actions should not reflect the entire news agency.
- Mship, on 06/10/2009, -5/+51While I agree with you that this cyclist was being a douche bag it is easy to tell that your only expericne with cyclist is being in a car. I say this because if you actaully rode a bike in NYC for more then 5-miles and actaully spoke to many of the cyclist in this city you would know what you say is not true.
Most people who cycle are down to earth people who ride there bike for excise and fun, and the reason they have problems with people who drive is because driver feel as if the rode only belongs to them. I know this from experience from being hit by a driver once and a few close calls for people who dont actually watch he rode when they drive.
However even with him riding on the let hand side, that does not give the driver the right to attack him with his car. There are many streets in NYC that are not designed for bikes, but those streets are the only ones available to cyclist to ride. So at times cyclist have to ride on the left hand side just to get by other cars. - NiftyG, on 06/10/2009, -10/+53To be technical, "Fox" isn't at fault, the driver of the vehicle is at fault. The fact that the driver works for Fox just makes him a professional liar.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -3/+44When drivers intentionally hit people, they get charged with "Assault with A Deadly Weapon". Which is more than likely what this FoxNews moron is going to get charged with. Have fun, guy.
- JacD, on 06/10/2009, -3/+43I think it's more like "wow this guy's a huge *****," and "oh what a coincidence, he works for a company that's famous for lying and distorting the truth."
- diggerpleez, on 06/10/2009, -9/+48FTA- "Riding precariously with a 4,000 lb wheel inches from pulling me beneath it"
Holy ***** - that one wheel weighs as much as my entire car! - misterparry, on 06/10/2009, -2/+40Fox News or not, that guy is a dick.
- 1hrSleep, on 06/10/2009, -3/+38Purposely moving slow? The speed limit was 25mph. Not hard to keep up on a road bike.
- Disclaimer, on 06/10/2009, -26/+58When I first started reading this article I was sympathizing with the bicyclist but as I went along it seemed as if the bicyclist was just being a douchebag and trying to cause some trouble. One he was on the wrong side of the road and two he was purposely moving slow. I live in NYC, bicyclist seem to have an issue with anyone who isn't riding a bike.
- SystemicThought, on 06/10/2009, -5/+37Because they get to their destination faster than both pedestrians and motorists :)
- manlyandy, on 06/10/2009, -2/+34Did Rick Sanchez blame the guy he hit and killed?
- doug89, on 06/10/2009, -9/+41Attempted Murder
Assault with a deadly weapon
Hit and Run
Obstruction of Justice
Reckless endangerment
Charge this bastard and hope something sticks. You have the witnesses. - mithrasinvictus, on 06/10/2009, -6/+37or a "socialist"
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -10/+41It's symptomatic of the selfish/narcissistic outlook that Fox News has.
- NiftyG, on 06/10/2009, -1/+29Every bike meets car thread is the same...
Driver hates slowing down for bikes, gets angry and goes psycho in some form or another.
Cyclist has to share road with psycho drivers, and cops an attitude because he almost got killed.
Cyclists and drivers may hate each other, but they actually do share one common interest - they both want to stay as far away from each other as possible. Reworking cities so that bikes had their own separate thoroughfares would keep them apart make both sides a lot happier. - quotidian, on 06/10/2009, -8/+36Welcome to New York. Pedestrians and motorists have reached an uneasy truce, but everyone still hates bicyclists.
- btschul, on 06/10/2009, -13/+41In December of 1990, CNN reporter Rick Sanchez got drunk and hit a man with his car, paralyzing and eventually killing him. Is everyone at CNN a nut job?
- bigplrbear, on 06/10/2009, -2/+28At least the onion is more entertaining :)
- beesaretasty, on 06/10/2009, -0/+26I agree with your observation, but as a cyclist myself I will say that I don't know the guy's history. I have had many encounters where drivers have shown very little respect for my life and I am a very courteous cyclist. Maybe he had one too many near death experiences and knew that blocking traffic is sometimes the best way not to be endangered by it. That is, of course, until somebody decides purposely to be an ***** to you because they think you are being an ***** to them. Unfortunately cars cause more damage than bikes.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -8/+32Yeah, that guy on a bike who almost got run over by a guy in an SUV was a total dick for confronting him about it. The nerve of some people... pfft... as if we're supposed to be accountable for our actions! Life should be more like the Intertubes, where everyone is faceless and you can be your true self (an *****) and threaten grievous bodily harm to someone for inconveniencing you (even though it was your own fault). What a wonderful world it would be... until you're on the receiving end.
- andywarthol, on 06/10/2009, -2/+23Broderick (driver) is lucky he didn't get a U lock to the skull...
Here's the deal with cyclists that do this kinda *****: They're pissed because rude motorists basically get away with everything. In Bike Vs. Car, car always wins. But some cyclists wanna fight back. They're pissed that everyone is getting away with being disrespectful. Some also feel superiority because cycling is a clean, healthy, positive way to get around, and to use a car is cheating yourself of many great rewards. - 1ShotJake, on 06/10/2009, -5/+25same thing,,, or at least to fox
- treecha02, on 06/10/2009, -1/+19reckless driving? he was going the speed limit (the article says that they both agreed the incident was caused by the biker going approximately 25 mph in the left lane and earlier in the article they also state the posted speed limit was 25 mph), and bikes have a right to a lane the same as any other vehicle on the road. Reckless driving would be hitting someone on a bike with your SUV and DRAGGING THEM FOR 200 FEET!
- SystemicThought, on 06/10/2009, -2/+19It's not blocking if the cyclist is riding at the posted speed limit, since no one should be going faster than that. Just saying.
- s0nicfreak, on 06/10/2009, -0/+16Yeah blocking traffic during rush hour in a PARK by going the speed limit.
- tightscrummy, on 06/10/2009, -4/+20How dare someone drive the speed limit through a park! ***** you internet tough guy.
- deathandtaverns, on 06/10/2009, -1/+17to be fair, he was drunk/stupid/irresponsible/ a destroyer of more than one person's life/should never be allowed to drive a car again, but he didn't think driving with a man on the hood of his car on purpose was a perfectly reasonable to do to teach a douchey cyclist a lesson, so no I would not call him a nutjob. I'm not making excuses for what he did, I'm just not questioning his sanity.
- s0nicfreak, on 06/10/2009, -0/+16audguy, if you can't get to work without speeding, you should be leaving MUCH earlier.
- nicodemus26, on 06/10/2009, -1/+17@diemunkiesdie
So, assuming he is 6 feet tall, it would take 0.818 to 1.636 seconds to run over him head to toe. This would most likely crush his organs, ribs, and skull (among other things.) Seems pretty terrifying to me. - snarkastic, on 06/10/2009, -1/+15@mwrl
You have the worst spelling and grammar of any troll I've yet encountered on Digg. Congratulations! You've set a new high bar for stupidity. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/10/2009, -3/+17You might be right, but isn't it so very Fox News like that he would try to blame the victim?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/10/2009, -0/+14Apparently you don't need a physics degree to get hit by a car.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13...aaaand Don Broderick's life becomes a living hell in...5...4...3...2...
- CYCLEORDIE, on 06/10/2009, -2/+15no one gets locked up for a few years from this kind of incident.
- tightscrummy, on 06/10/2009, -5/+18I'm sure there were some wonderful people in the SS.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -3/+15If you want to run over people in your car, be prepared to be visited in the shower in prison.
- s0nicfreak, on 06/10/2009, -3/+15@Charlotte_Web
1. Looking at it in google street view, I'm not sure if there is a bike lane at that particular part (the pics seem to have been taken when there was something going on that blocks a lot of the street); but either way he may have been trying to turn. And since he was going the speed limit he was free to be in that lane anyway.
2. He was in Central Park.
3. No, he was GOING THE SPEED LIMIT. The drivers behind him were trying to intentionally break the law and endanger others.
4. The driver was a douche to him first. - wonderchemist, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12I'm pretty sure any speed is too fast when used in a sentence with "dragged by car".
- treehugger87, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you live in a rural area without many cyclists and so are not familiar with the law. In most cities, New York included, the law requires that cyclists obey traffic laws and operate as if they were a motor vehicle. The law states that if you are going slower than traffic to pull as close to the side as you can to allow traffic to pass. In this instance the cyclist was not going "slower than traffic", he was traveling at the speed limit. The motorists right to travel above the speed limit because he is in a hurry does not supercede the cyclist's right to safety.
- CaptOblivious, on 06/10/2009, -1/+13He diden't back up ANYTHING.
Driving at the limit is not "backing up traffic" at worst, he prevented a jackass in an suv from speeding for a few blocks.
For this the SUV driver more or less attempted to ***** KILL HIM. - an0nymous, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11Yeah!
Obnoxious people should be dragged to death! - treehugger87, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11@kronos. From the map given, it looks like Dooda was cut off just south of 97th street. That implies that Dooda was in the left lane well before 97th street, though doesn't say how long. There is a fork in the road at 102nd street where traffic would be forced to either go left in order to stay in the park or go right in order to leave the park. If I were on a bike in and there was a lot of traffic, I would want to take the first opportunity I could get within a 1/2 mile of that fork to get in that lane. If I was in good enough shape to maintain 25MPH on a flat surface, I would want to be in the left lane sooner.
It is true that it is not the cyclist's responsibility to enforce the speed limit, but it is the responsibility of any driver to understand the laws of the city that they are driving in. In New York City, bicycles are not required to pull over to the side of the road if they are going the speed limit or above. He may have been "holding up traffic", but certainly not in a way that was illegal or unsafe. -
