- SushiCW, on 06/10/2009, -0/+78I was disappointed to find out he didn't snag it out of the air with an extremely well-thrown cast.
- smashblu, on 06/10/2009, -0/+58We need to stop overfishing missiles. Populations of these have been steadily declining in recent years. Japan alone is responsible for over 78% of the missiles caught. Missiles were recently added to the threatened species list. If we don't do something soon, this wonderful species will become extinct!
- ngmcs8203, on 06/10/2009, -0/+56"Live one ... fisherman Rodney Salomon wasn't allowed to keep the air-to-air guided missile he caught "
So we decided to take a picture of his camera's LCD screen instead to show you what it looks like. - news.com.au - awtripp, on 06/10/2009, -0/+37All we get is a picture of picture?
- Zirdante, on 06/10/2009, -1/+24yo dawg and so forth
- frontaxle, on 06/10/2009, -0/+15RODNEY, DON"T WHACK IT!!!!
- nbx909, on 06/10/2009, -0/+14At least north korea keeps returning missiles to the wild.
- FearlessFreep, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13Japanese like them raw with some wasabi and rice
- gemlarin, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12I was a 2W071 (Munitions) in the Air Force, worked with AIM-9's on a daily basis. It is hard to see real well from that picture, but it does indeed look like an AIM-9, and it does not look live. If it was, there would be a bright yellow band right behind the guidance unit. I dont see one in that picture.
When the pilots fly sorties, they load the wings with payloads of "dummy" missiles and bombs to both simulate the weight loaded, and they put live guidance units on inert missiles so they can practice with the targeting systems. Occasionally they come back with the dummy missiles missing for various reasons (no danger as they fly sorties over large bodies of water in most cases). It seems this guy found one of them. - TonyTheTerrible, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10how does that prove it's fake? it seems to back the story.
- sharkd, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10The original picture (that's pictured) here:
http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/ar ... - BossKey, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10To curry sympathy for these creatures, "missiles" will now be called "sea joysticks."
- maz2331, on 06/10/2009, -0/+9Sidewinder sushi must be served with saki.
- offrdbandit, on 06/10/2009, -0/+9Topped with uranium?
- FearlessFreep, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8a dedicated fisherman
- wadd, on 06/10/2009, -1/+9Overfishing isn't the problem. Habitat depletion due to global warming is killing them.
- centran, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8and I suppose the other story of him strapping it to the roof and riding through lightning was true too... or how they packed it in ice... or how 3 days later he found another one but it was beeping so he let it go.
- TyIsOwned, on 06/10/2009, -2/+9Only in Florida.
- gmiley, on 06/10/2009, -0/+7I thought it was pretty obvious that he was joking.
- tullinator121, on 06/10/2009, -0/+7Dugg cause Rodney's such a cool dude
- pinchduck, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5Picture-in-picture used to be all the rage. You kids these days don't know how good you have it...
- cuoops, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5UPDATE: Missile found by fisherman wasn't live, military says
"The missile that belonged to us was not live," King said, when asked about the AIM-9. He said there were 300 missile tests over the Gulf of Mexico every year. King said the MacDill bomb squad dismantled the missile to ensure the AIM-9's confidential technology was not compromised.
http://www.newsherald.com/articles/missile-74866-c ... - thegrizz51, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5So, you are telling me that the Associated Press couldn't figure out how to download the picture from this guy's camera?!?!?! They had to take a picture of the camera?!?!
Journalism at its finest! - personalspace, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4I'd have a beer with him.
And afterward he'd tell his crew he drank margaritas with some obscure supermodel from Morocco who would know him in carnal fashion beneath the table while a one armed waitress played a lute and sang songs of his prowess with guided missiles. - gemlarin, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4It is not live. No yellow banding. Have to take my word on this one, I worked with them in the Air Force for 10 years. Also, how does this prove that the story is fake?
It has a brown band which indicates low explosive presence. The low explosive is the pressurized argon container in the guidance unit that cools the raydome during targeting practice.
If anyone needs evidence, here ya go. Scroll down to Missile Identification. The reporters need to do their homework.
http://www.ordnance.org/designat.htm - deviouskoopa, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3"I had it secure. I keep it cool,'' he told The Associated Press, adding that he packed it with ice.
Wow, no wonder he's a fisherman... - dafragsta, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Can I get a tempora missile roll? Oh yeah, and don't skimp on the wasabi!
- donte, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Well ***** if that's what he's fishing for, someone should tell this man that there's a whole school of those things off the coast of North Korea.
- offrdbandit, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3He certainly didn't pull up a "beeping" bomb (or missile), but there is no telling what he could have pulled up (and whatever he did pull up could very well have been beeping). Between the military and hurricanes all sorts of weird stuff gets pulled up out there from time to time, so I wouldn't say he's lying (though he very well may be).
- wonko33, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2That sure explains a lot of the Bermuda triangle dissapearances,
- mariowario, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2So that's how the pirates acquire their weapons ...
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -1/+3He was lying about the 2nd "beeping" bomb.
- offrdbandit, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2You just gotta hope the thing doesn't detonate when it hits the bottom.
- gemlarin, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2It looks inert from that picture. Live AIM -9 's would have a bright yellow band right behind the guidance unit. I dont see one in that image.
- PopcornDave, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2The one that should have gotten away?
- bigp3rm, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2I wonder if the missing nukes are in there too.
- maz2331, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2That would be a case where I'd catch and release. I wouldn't want a possibly explosive item on my boat.
- RainyDayNinja, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2You're really a Moroccan supermodel? Cool.
- LibertyPrime, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2He just found a good chunk of tax payer dollars right there.
- JoeVet, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2FTA: "Eglin Air Force Base later denied the missile was carrying explosives, claiming it was a "telemetry missile" used for evaluation purposes."
Must have been some bad telemetry equipment if they couldn't locate their lost missle. - sharkd, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Wrong coast.
But, yeah, if you were to tell people that you were headed to Bermuda and, instead, crashed while flying towards Texas, you'd be pretty hard to find, too. - rjc309, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2My immediate thought was the same thing. Something Wile E. Coyote-esque...
- sharkd, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Far better photo:
http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/ar ... - cptcliche, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2This sounds like the idea behind a Far Side cartoon
- Chalks777, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2way better link.
- MaryCait, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2I've seen a fly hook get someone in the nostril, but this might take the cake.
- thegrizz51, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1Star of David, I think
- mrpunman, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1A yellowcake?
- piratefish, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1i'd put a cowboy hat on ... and ride on it
- piratefish, on 06/10/2009, -0/+1thanx for link!
