- disabled4diggin, on 10/10/2007, -4/+41The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire. We don't need no water cause we're a fire protection agen... ***** call the fire department!
- Nicksname1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29If I asked someone what the definition of Irony was and they just showed me this picture, I would punch that person in the face.
- SonicRush, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Can't wait for the picture section so I can uncheck this crap.
- ajchavar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13"the use of words expressing something other than their literal intention. now THAT. IS. I-RON-Y"
-bender - NeoCortex, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14No, this is the definition of irony: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Think they missed the end of the quote:
And then she said, ‘And that’s the irony.” I said, ‘Yup. That is a good way to excuse my ignorance of the definition of a word I used for the basis of an entire song.' - hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7ironically.. she agrees

"For me the sweetest moment came in New York when a woman came up to me in a record store and said, ‘So all those things in the ‘Ironic’ aren’t ironic.’ And then she said, ‘And that’s the irony.” I said, ‘Yup.’
tho i think qualifies as cosmic irony..myself - BradC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I saw this place a couple weekends ago. It's in Burbank. The square white building on the north-east corner of Clybourn and Magnolia

- disabled4diggin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7LOL! If someone asked me the definition of funny I would just show them a picture of you.
- viniciusfontes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Went down because it was an ARCHITECTURAL company. If it was an ENGINEERING company, I doubt that would happen.
- mtwolf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+55. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
Keep reading, think #5 here covers it. - jun2san, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Fire Protection in construction doesn't literally mean total protection from a fire. It typically means supressing the fire long enough to allow occupants to escape safely. For example, being a contractor, I would hire a fire protection company to install a sprinkler system in a building. No building is 100% fireproof. But still, I guess this "singed" the company's reputation.
- socialidiocy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you just took all the fun out of it...
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I think you're missing the point of the irony.
"put a sign up and say 'just goes to show it can happen to anyone'", even those with their protection.
They are supposed to protect you from fire, they failed at even protecting themselves, why would you then want to buy protection from them? - secretivecoward, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://www.boingboing.net/200709051138.jpg
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected."
How about them apples? You would EXPECT a fire protection company to be good at protecting themselves from fire, hence irony. - oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Blackadder: Baldrick, do you have any idea what irony is?
Baldrick: Yeah, it's like silvery or goldy, just with iron. - palehorse864, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4co·in·ci·dence /koʊˈɪnsɪdəns/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[koh-in-si-duhns] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a striking occurrence of two or more events at one time apparently by mere chance: Our meeting in Venice was pure coincidence.
2. the condition or fact of coinciding.
3. an instance of this.
i·ro·ny1 /ˈaɪrəni, ˈaɪər-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -nies.
1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature.
a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp. as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
****5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.*****
6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.
8. an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.
This is far more ironic than coincidental. A coincidence would be the building burning down because you happened to put all your fire extinguishers in one room just before it caught fire, although not a textbook definition. It's two events coinciding in a particular way.
This situation would fit definition 5 of irony in the above. You may expect the fire prevention company to know how best to prevent a fire, yet they are the ones who burn down. This runs "contrary to what was, or might have been, expected." I think it fits pretty well. - PaperMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Irony is not yet one of those words. I love the usage makes it so argument.. Usage may make it so but it doesn't make it right.
- HanSolo69, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ha! the irony is overwhelming!
no, wait..that's not right...the irony is actually non-existent. - Jerome99, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3BURN
- lava, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think she just wrote a stupid song and got lucky that the fact was ironic.
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4No, that is an example of one.
- fezzasus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5This is a great chance for their advertising, put a sign up and say 'just goes to show it can happen to anyone'
- Luis911, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I wrote in their blog that,
Well I work in a fire protection company and usually we install the fire suppression systems in industrial kitchens(restaurants and stuff). So they wouldnt really have a fire suppression system installed in there or w.e. That and also the fact that they have many Flamable Containers and liquids in storage that may explode if exposed to flame. So yea sorry to ruin all your fun. - 808kick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It would only be ironic if their products caused the fire
- hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@spudnic
haha..true - the quote does go on..
then she said, ‘And that’s the irony.” I said, ‘Yup.’ To me it’s a real snapshot of a nineteen-year-old’s definition and version of how life worked at the time. All that ‘Ironic’ touches on spawned all my future inquiries into and current understandings of the mysteries of life.” - spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That would be fire insurance. It says fire protection.
- hammerpants, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's actually the definition of coincidence. Irony is something else.
- liminaldust, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1lol you killed me with that comment
- tmjdisorder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Just for the record, rain on your wedding day is not ironic.
- Joecrook, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0that's like the volunteer fire department in Glen oaks New york that burned down. and this place probably had fireman in it.
- ouralien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This place is used to be an accounting company. They must have put the fire protection sign AFTER the fire. I work in the building next door. So It's a funny picture, but it's TOTALLY inaccurate. Sorry guys.
- cloudedice, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I think it would be ironic if we were all made out of iron.
- fezzasus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The fact is, this isn't ironic. Fire protection doesn't mean it wont happen, it means you are insured against it if it does.
The building being shown with fire damage means they haven't got the money from the insurance yet or it was cheaper to condem the building and find a new one. - ouralien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0This place used to be an accounting company. They put the fire protection sign AFTER the fire. I work in the building next door. So It's a funny picture, but it's TOTALLY inaccurate. Sorry guys.

- TheThirdRider, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Irony: of, resembling, relating to, or tasting much like iron
eg1: "The anvil was delicious, but irony."
eg2: This definition of irony - N256, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Excellent reply.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0No. It's not like that song at all.

- isuisorisuaint, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1fire burnya!
- super_spyder, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1I hate pretentious ass hats that always say "WTF N00B THATS NOT IRONY!!!11!" its just so annoying. Maybe that wasn't the original definition of the word, but fortunately or unfortunately language evolves and changes. Words that had one meaning 100 years ago don't necessarily have the same meaning today.
- wittyname, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0"This was a controlled burn." -- Owner of Company, trying to save his ass.
- wiirdo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Awesome. Nearby where I live, there was an architectural company who had a build-out to increase the size of their building. It collapsed half-way through construction. Wish I took a pic. LOVE THE IRONY!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1The ironing is flatten.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0Excellent comment.
