- flernk, on 10/11/2007, -25/+336I've lived in California (both northern and southern), Oregon, Washington, Idaho, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This test placed me in "Midland" (just south of the Lakes).
So I went through and picked the first option on all answers. Guess what... Midland. Then I went through and picked the last option on all answers. Midlands again. Then I picked random answers. You guessed it, Midland again.
This test is lame. - Ziqing, on 10/11/2007, -3/+208Lol, wtf. I'm a Chinese living in Canada and I have midland accent?!
- Jon211, on 10/11/2007, -2/+173I'm British - apparently my accent is most like a Northeastern American accent.
- spamly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+140Inbred Kentucky
("Inbred Kentucky" is not necessarily the same thing as "Southern") While you may be from anywhere in the country. It is obvious that your parents are related. You own a banjo an most people avoid you.
Those quiz makers are *****. - nights0223, on 10/11/2007, -5/+122Seems you didn't read the part that says "Since it's a neutral accent, just because you have a Midland accent doesn't mean you're from the Midland."
- sarazen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+109Seems I am a midlander despite growing up in North Carolina.
- davdev, on 10/11/2007, -1/+93I had midland too, and I have a very thick Boston accent. Think Damon in the Departed.
This is BS - Shaggy6ster, on 10/11/2007, -3/+62"You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for."
Buffalo, indeed. Born and raised.
Living in the South kills me, now. Oil is pronounced like old, minus the "d". Pill and peel, are the exactly the same, and well as hill and heel. Days of the week end in "ee"; Mondee, Tuesdee, etc. Magically, "store" has two syllables; "stow-er". - ezweave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+49Due to the influence of television and movies, I am going to go out on a limb and guess that many Americans and Canadians would get the "midlander" accent, no matter where they are from.
Having lived in many places and grown up all over, I can say that despite stereotypes most people talk like that... younger people especially. Even if you're from NYC, Atlanta, etc. I blame TV. - ch4os1337, on 10/11/2007, -2/+47Whoa. It says im canadian? how did it know that! I am actually canadian
- NeoCortex, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46Apparently I'm a midlander, and I was born in New Hampshire. That's a pretty big discrepancy, confusing a New England accent with...well, anything else.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+45Result: Hillbilly retard...
Ouch - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+41Northern... they got it right!
- lkmbrd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.
My apartment smells of rich mahogany. - NCSUspoon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34Me too, born and raised in Raleigh, NC. Still a midlander i guess.
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34Title didn't tell me what accent I have.
- stoops, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32I'm Canadian but I took this test anyway, and here was my result.
"What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)
North Central
What people call the "Minnesota accent." Sounds almost Canadian. You may have even been asked if you were from Canada before."
Not too bad of a test I guess :) - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+26Well...I believe Californians talk with a non-descript accent, which I guess is what midland is, but what sets us apart is the slang.
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27It knew I was Canadian.. haha
- staffell, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Having lived in Britain my entire life, born bred and raised, I have a Northeastern American Accent. Weird!
:/ - AzDraon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Same, but I grew up in Arizona.
- robdowns, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Wow- it got mine right.
Although, I have no clue what question 15 was asking:
"15. If you say words like TIME, RIDE, MILE, I, etc., we all know that there`s a way people down South say those words. Don`t lie about it, how often do you ever say those kind of words like that?" - thediggerguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23The test worked for me
Im from Canada and it said I had a Canadian accent - Chewie67, on 10/11/2007, -12/+32Exactly.
Now learn to speak correctly all you dolts who didn't come up with this answer! - mikeman8905, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21well it got mine right...
North Central
...and I live in Minnesota...and I have been asked if I was from Canada. - ajchavar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19got mine dead on, i grew up on in philly, and they told me i have a mid-atlantic or "Philadelphia accent"
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+20All they had to ask was: "Do you prounounce 'about' as 'aboot'?"
- defubar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Northern, from Michigan.
- ahhell, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Don't you mean "Bastan" not Boston.
- unwiseone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Lived in California since I was four (born in Michigan), the pegged me as a "Midlander".
- M3RCINIAN, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I'm British and I got northeastern (along with jon211)
- Linkin4, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Same here, CT, got northern, they should just place northern in the "proper English" category.
- tcquad, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16This test did not very accurately capture New England accents, because we pronounce all the words wrong, so they still rhyme with each other like they would with the standard Midland accent. The best test came from my AP Chem teacher way back in high school. Read and then repeat out loud:
"Do as you ought to, add acid to water"
If it rhymes, you're from New England (Boston accent). Non-N.E. won't shorten "ought to" to "oughtta" and "water" to "watah", you'll get one or neither. - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15i believe that would be "bawstin"
- ironrex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Midlander, from Virginia (northern) which will most likely yield different results from Virginia (southern)
- TomRemixed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15You need to hear some one talking to truly get their accent. I mean I'm not sure I answered truthfully on those because when some one thinks about it they say it the right way.
- creiss74, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin makin trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one lil fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in bel Air' - Henchman24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Looks like this test really pegged the Canadians.
- othersomethings, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16Midland - which is exactly what I thought. I have a very non-descript accent. You absolutely could not tell where I was from by my speech. Something I noticed when I was a young teen, and have been grateful for as an adult. I live in a very southern influenced area, and the accents I hear daily can be anything from quaint to atrocious.
Damn you alaorgiaennaseesianassippi-ites. - profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I'm Canadian too, and I got... Canadian??
"People from outside North America probably think you're from the States, but over here we wouldn't make such a mistake."
That's a surprise, I thought it was supposed to be American accents only... Nifty. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I'm a midlander as well, but I grew up in Oklahoma..
- aknowles5139, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Im from Ontario Canada and I got a Canadian accent.
- sKiLLa182, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It got me with my Canadian accent.
- JCSaint, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I have a Northern accent though I live in Jersey. I'd like to know what the different results can be. Is there a Jersey option?
- andrewry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Same, I got northern. However, I'm from southern Minnesota and it says I'm from northern! Just kidding, pretty accurate if you answer right.
- bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11this is an incredibly inaccurate test. not once was i asked if i pronounce my R's ... (or ahhh's)
- kript, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)
Canadian
People from outside North America probably think you're from the States, but over here we wouldn't make such a mistake.
ftw. - TehSwat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I'm Canadian and I got a "Canadian Accent"
This test knows what its talking aboot. - mildewmedia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Most people will get Midland because it's how they talk on the tv.
- WillGabriel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Hurrah! It pegged me as Canadian as well.
Though it does seem VERY odd that all Canadians are considered to have the same sort of accent; Canada is larger and more sparsely populated than the states, which suggests that there would be more diverse dialects than there are in the states. Hell, I know for a fact that the West, Acadia, and the Maritimes have completely different accents. You can tell that someone is from Newfoundland with no problem at all. -
